Chapter 41: Chapter 41
Setting aside the dishes, she headed for a refreshing shower, allowing the warm water to soothe her tired muscles and clear her mind.
Dressed in comfortable loungewear, she settled onto her couch, scrolling through Netflix, searching for a show to unwind with. Just as she was about to select a series, her phone screen lit up with Bryan's name flashing across it. Her heart skipped a beat at the unexpected call.
" Talk of the devil, " she mumbled to herself with a smile, deliberately delaying answering the call to collect her thoughts. She allowed herself a moment to appreciate the rush of emotions that came with the sight of his name on the screen.
Taking a deep breath to compose herself, Ava finally answered the call, her voice calm and collected. " Hi, Bryan. What's up? " she greeted him casually, masking the subtle excitement that danced within her.
Bryan's voice, warm and familiar, flowed through the phone. " Hey, Ava. I hope I'm not disturbing you, " he began, his tone laced with a hint of hesitation.
" Not at all. I was just winding down for the evening, " Ava replied, trying to keep her tone casual despite the butterflies fluttering in her stomach. She liked how they both pretended nothing happened between them the other night.
Bryan chuckled softly. " Good timing then. I wanted to check in and see how your day went, " he said, his voice carrying a hint of genuine interest.
Ava felt a surge of warmth at his concern. " It was alright, nothing out of the ordinary, " she replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
They were both quiet for a minute until Bryan spoke again.
" Ava, can you come outside for a moment? " Bryan's voice sounded calm yet somewhat urgent, catching Ava off guard.
" What do you mean? " Ava inquired, a glimmer of hope tugging at her.
" I'm outside, Ava. Can you come out, please? " Bryan's voice came through the phone once again, a hint of insistence in his tone.
A wave of surprise washed over her as she processed his unexpected request. With a rush of curiosity and a hint of nervousness, Ava hurriedly made her way to the door, her heart pounding in anticipation.
Unlocking the door, she stepped outside cautiously, scanning the area. To her astonishment, Bryan's figure stood a few feet away, bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, his presence unexpected and inexplicably stirring a flurry of emotions within her.
" Bryan, what are you doing here? " Ava asked, a mixture of surprise and intrigue in her voice as she approached him.
" I wanted to talk to you in person, got here long before I called you " Bryan replied, his eyes meeting hers with a warmth that sent a shiver down her spine.
Ava couldn't help but feel a rush of emotions at the proximity and unexpectedness of his visit. Her mind raced with questions and possibilities, her heart beating a little faster.
Their impromptu meeting outside her apartment, under the starlit sky, left Ava with a sense of wonder and a newfound curiosity about what Bryan had to say. She awaited his words, feeling a sense of anticipation tinged with a hint of nervousness, uncertain about what this unexpected encounter might bring.
" Can we take a walk, please? " Bryan's voice was gentle, his eyes earnest as he waited for her response.
Ava hesitated, a mix of apprehension and curiosity swirling within her. " I... I'm not sure, Bryan, " she replied, her voice betraying her uncertainty.
" I meant no harm, Ava. Trust me, " Bryan reassured her in a soft tone, his sincerity evident in his words.
Reluctantly, Ava agreed, nodding slightly as they set off on a quiet stroll together. The evening air was cool, the faint rustle of leaves providing a soothing background to their steps. Silence enveloped them, each lost in their own thoughts, the air heavy with anticipation and unspoken words.
Bryan walked beside Ava, his expression contemplative. After several minutes of quietude, he finally broke the silence, his voice soft yet weighted with remorse.
" I wanted to apologize for how I acted the previous night, " Bryan began, his words carrying a hint of regret. " I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable or create any confusion. "
Ava's gaze flickered towards him, surprised by his unexpected apology. She felt a mixture of relief and curiosity. She blushed and looked away without saying a word.
He continued " Trust me Ava, I would never hurt you. I want you to know that " She looked at him, trying to figure out if he meant what he said.
" It came as a surprise when you acted like that because I thought we were both... enjoying it " His eyes looked clouded as he stared deeply into her eyes.
Ava blushed and looked away the second time which made him stop.
" It's okay, Bryan, " Ava replied softly, her voice tinged with understanding. " I appreciate your honesty. "
" You've probably had a bad experience with guys before but trust me, I'm different and I'll never think of hurting you " He said and stared at her with a genuine expression.
Ava listened attentively, feeling a sense of clarity and relief wash over her. The honesty and vulnerability in Bryan's words reassured her, easing the lingering tension that had lingered since the previous evening's events.
Their conversation veered towards lighter topics, exchanging stories and laughter, the evening taking a pleasant turn as they strolled side by side. With each step, Ava felt a newfound understanding and a sense of closure settling between them.
As they walked back towards her apartment building, Bryan bid her goodnight with a warm smile, leaving Ava with a sense of resolution and a deeper appreciation for the sincerity he had displayed. Standing alone under the night sky, Ava felt a weight lifted off her shoulders, grateful for the honest conversation that had brought clarity to their relationship.
