Chapter 17: Chapter 17

Bryan arrived at the cemetery early in the morning, the sun just starting to peek over the horizon, casting a soft golden glow on the rows of gravestones. He clutched a small bouquet of wildflowers, Rachel's favorite, as he made his way to her resting place.

" Morning, Rachel, " Bryan greeted softly, placing the flowers delicately on the grave. He sat down, legs crossed, facing her headstone, lost in thought.

" Excuse me, sir? Are you Bryan? "

Startled, Bryan turned to find a young woman standing a few feet away, holding a watering can and a handful of freshly picked roses.

" Yes, that's me, " Bryan replied, a hint of curiosity in his voice.

" I'm Sarah, the caretaker here, " she said with a warm smile. " Your secretary, Lily, called ahead. She mentioned you'd be visiting today. "

Bryan nodded, touched by Lily's thoughtfulness. " Thank you, Sarah. You take care of this place beautifully. "

" It's my pleasure, " Sarah replied, her eyes scanning the tranquil cemetery. " I believe these flowers will brighten Rachel's resting place. "

Bryan observed Sarah as she carefully arranged the roses in a nearby vase, a tender touch in her actions. There was something comforting about her presence amidst the quietude of the cemetery.

" Lily mentioned how understanding you've been, " Bryan remarked, curious about the caretaker who seemed genuinely invested in her role.

" I try my best, " Sarah said, her gaze shifting to meet Bryan's. " Loss is a difficult journey, and everyone copes differently. But being there for one another in small ways, like remembering, that's important. "

Bryan nodded in agreement, appreciating Sarah's insight. " It's hard to believe it's been a year already. Feels like yesterday. "

" Time doesn’t always heal wounds, but it can soften the edges, " Sarah offered, her tone empathetic.

The distant sound of chirping birds mingled with the gentle rustle of leaves, creating a serene atmosphere around them.

" Do you visit often? " Bryan asked, curious about Sarah's connection to the cemetery.

" Yes, every day, " Sarah replied, her voice tinged with a mix of dedication and reverence. " I tend to the grounds, make sure everything looks peaceful for those who come to remember. "

Bryan nodded, a newfound appreciation for the caretaker's role forming within him. " It's people like you who make these places feel less lonely. "

Sarah smiled, a softness in her eyes. " Thank you, Bryan. I believe everyone deserves a place to be remembered and cherished. "

" Now let me leave you both to talk " She added, the smile still evident on her face.

Bryan thanked her and she left. He cleared his throat, trying to compose himself.

" Hey, sweetheart, " he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. " It's been another year. Can't believe how time flies. "

He traced the engraved letters of her name with trembling fingers, lost in a flood of memories. Suddenly, a rustling behind him broke his reverie. Turning, he noticed Lily approaching him with a somber expression.

" Lily, what are you doing here? " Bryan asked, surprised.

" I... I wanted to give you some space, sir, but I also brought the updated schedule and some documents you might need, " Lily explained, offering a small folder.

Bryan managed a weak smile, touched by her thoughtfulness. " Thank you, Lily. I really appreciate it. "

As Lily stepped back to give him privacy, Bryan's gaze returned to the grave. He took a deep breath before continuing, his words filled with emotion. " I miss you, Rachel. Every single day. Jayden's grown into a remarkable young man. You'd be so proud of him. "

The gentle breeze seemed to carry his words to the sky. Bryan settled onto a nearby bench, his eyes fixed on the horizon as memories of Emma flooded his mind.

" I remember the day Jayden was born, " he murmured. " You were so happy, holding our little boy... and then... then everything changed. "

A tear escaped his eye, tracing a path down his cheek. Bryan wiped it away hastily, trying to compose himself.

" I wish you were both here, " he admitted, his voice thick with longing. " Jayden's turned into an amazing young adult, but he's missed so much without you. "

" I missed us too, the ever faithful support you had for me, everything Rachel, everything " Bryan continued, his voice trembling at the last words.

" I hope you've found your peace, we all miss you " He concluded, quickly blinking back the tears which were threatening to fall.

From behind him, he heard a discreet cough. He turned to find Sarah, looking uncertain as she stood there awkwardly.

He smiled at her warmly " Is there something you want? "

She shook her head and stretched out a hand to reveal a bottle of water " Thought you might need this "

Bryan's smile broadened as he reached out to collect it from her " Very much in fact, thanks Sarah "

Sarah nodded, acknowledging his appreciation " You're welcome. " She found a comfortable spot and went down beside him.

" I don't mean to be a bother, just thought you might need some company " She said, smiling at him tenderly.

" But I can leave if you want " She added when he didn't say anything immediately.

Bryan stared at her, thinking she looked wiser than her years " It's fine Sarah, I'd like that very much "

" Thank you " He whispered, not meant for her ears and stared at Rachel's grave.

As the morning unfolded, Bryan found solace in their conversation. He thanked Sarah for her care and bid farewell to Rachel, knowing he’d return again, not just for her but for the unexpected connection he found in the presence of those who tended to the memories of others.
