Chapter 70: Chapter 70
“I see that you have managed to earn my son’s full trust. It seems like he listens to you alone.” Liam’s mother says this when Liam and Mitch disappear from our sight.
“There must be a very good reason why an intelligent man like Liam would choose to trust a total stranger over his own mother and family at large, don’t you think so, Mrs. Adams?” I fired back.
“Congratulations, Lynda Rose! You have undergone a great transformation since the last time I saw you. Back then, you always bowed down whenever I talked to you, but now you have the boldness to even talk back at me.” She said, and I don’t think that congratulation is genuine. She must be murmuring denumerable curses inside of me.
“Thank you, and time changes everything, Mrs. Adams. Even you changed a great deal. I mean, I never knew this heartless side of yours back then. Now you are even working against your own son. What a change, Mrs. Adams. I am sorry, though. I cannot congratulate you for that.” I state.
She swallows hard, her eyes burning with a fire of rage. Why? The truth hurts, doesn’t it? “You don’t know what you are talking about, so you better shut the hell up!” She squeals.
“I beg to differ, Mrs. Adams. I know everything, and maybe even more than you do.” I challenge. She is not getting me today.
“If you knew anything, Lynda, you wouldn’t be talking this bullshit about me betraying my own son—the only child I have for that mother. We may have made a mistake by getting him married for our own convenience, but that was the only mistake we made. And I am here to correct that.” She states, making sure that her voice does not go beyond my ears.
She is here to do what? Wait, did I hear that right, or is it my ears playing some tricks on me?
“What are you talking about?” I ask, curiosity rising so high.
“I am here to save my son from this hell we threw him into. And the only way I could have done this was by making Mitchell and her family believe that I was on their side.” She explains, and I can feel some truth in her words.
However, I cannot help being taken aback. Was Liam and I that wrong about her mission and intentions here? “So, what is your plan?” I ask.
“My plan is to distract Mitch as much as I can while you both speed up your investigations about them. She should never find anything to use against you both.” She explains.
So, that is why she was so adamant about following Mitch to my room, huh? That was why she opposed it with that lame excuse. She is quite a wise one. How could we not have seen it? I mean, she would have been the first to lead the way to the room that held our dark secrets if she were indeed here to expose us.
"But Liam has already made up his mind to end this. You heard him.” I state. It is too bad that her good intentions are being revealed when it is too late. If only she had been open to us from the minute she came back here, things would have been different.
“And that is why I wanted to talk to you, Lynda.” She says.
“Why?” I implore, banking all my curiosity on her.
This is quite awkward for me. The great Mrs. Adams is talking to me so calmly like this. Not to mention that she seems like she needs my help. “You need to stop Liam from doing something insane! He cannot lose focus and do something irrational.” She says, and I drop my face.
What? I…
"But I can’t. He has already made up his mind, and there is nothing that will change his mind again about this.” I state. I doubt he will change his mind this time around. He is determined to end this.
“Why can’t you? I have seen how he listens to you. You can definitely do something if you want to, Lynda. I am begging you, Lynda; this is the only favor I will ever ask. Go stop Liam if you want the best for this family.” She pleads.
If there is no reason for that, you know. I want the best for this family. That is why I accepted Liam’s offer to save this family. That is why I am tangled in this mess. But I know I cannot change Liam’s mind. He knows best what needs to be done. He might be acting irrationally, but I want to believe he is well-prepared for what is to come. Besides, I also want us to put all this behind us and live happily with Liam and our baby.
“You are silent. What is the matter? You can’t let Liam do whatever he intends to do tonight. I am here for both of you. We still have time to go by his original plan. We don’t have to rush anything.” She speaks again, snapping me from my thoughts.
“I am sorry, Mrs. Adams, but it is too late now. I cannot do anything.” I mumble.
“You have to, Lynda. Come on! I am sure you can do something.” She pleads again.
“I am sorry, I can’t do anything. I am sorry.” I say.
She sighs in defeat. “Can you at least tell me what he plans to do tonight? His father and I need to be aware of what to expect.” She pleads again, putting me between a rock and a hard place.
How can I tell her that? I would betray Liam. And besides, Liam himself must have had a good reason for not telling her. I can’t betray him like this. It hurts, but she will have to forgive me this time. “I am so sorry for that too, Mrs. Adams. It will be best if you hear the plan from Liam himself.” I say, breaking her heart into a thousand pieces. She seems hopeless. Desperate. Miserable. I know she feels like her efforts are not appreciated, but she will have to understand me. I am sure she would do the same if she were in my shoes. “I am so sorry.” I add.
She slightly nods her head. “It is okay. I understand. I just hope that all turns out well.” She says.
“Trust your son, Mrs. Adams. He knows what he is doing. He has sacrificed a lot for this to just throw all his efforts away like that.” I console her, and she nods her head. “If that is all, excuse me, Mrs. Adams. I will go inside.” I say this as I turn to leave.
“Wait, Lynda.” She calls, and I turn around, meeting her eyes.
“Yes, Mrs. Adams?” I respond.
“I don’t know what exactly is going on between you and my son, but I know there is more to this surrogacy. Whatever it is, I don’t know how you both have managed to keep it hidden for this long, but now you have to be extra careful until this ordeal is done. If Mitchell or her family find even a tiny bit of dirt to hold against us, we are done for good, Lynda. The fate of the Adams family depends entirely on the decisions that you and Liam will make tonight.” She says.
I know that, but like I said, she should trust his son and believe that things will not go wrong. Faith works miracles, right? That is what I myself am holding on to—faith in Liam and faith in fate!
