Chapter 43: Chapter 43
Abigail watched the two people in front of her curiously as Ena sipped her coffee.
“See how they keep touching each other?" Ena asked leaning back in the chair.
Anna focused on the couple seated a table away from them in the café they were currently at.
"That's Marianne and Drakel, a werewolf couple" Mariah explained, "they come for the meetings at times. See Marianne is a rare hybrid, half witch half wolf, and Drakel is her mate"
"The history is not of importance" Ena began eyeing her little sister calmly, she turned back to Anna And Abigail who were seated opposite them, "I know that back in Pariah and it's lands kingdoms are divided, it's rare witches mix with wolves or even vampires, angels or demons, but here there are no kings no rules, no one lives by any laws"
She leaned in closer to Abigail, "mother witch, that is a mated couple" she pointed at the two.
Marianne and Drakel couldn't keep their hands of each other, the smile on her face alone was a clear sign on how deeply she was in love with him and the way Drakel would play with the strands of her hair or lightly brush her thigh playfully underneath the table proved that he was too. And that spoke volumes because Marianne was about fifty three and Drakel could be in his late fifties.
Yet every Monday morning for the last twenty seven years they would have their coffee in this cafe and touch each other like school kids.
One would wonder how intense it must have been when they first found out they were mates.
"Watch this," Ena flicked her hand and suddenly Marianne yelped. Blood stained her hand from where the cup she was holding had somehow clipped her.
It wasn't a second later when she was in Drakel’s arms being cooed over her like she was a new born baby.
"Ena!" Mariah scolded in a low whisper.
Ena rolled her eyes, "it's a small nick, she's a werewolf, and it will heal in a half a second. And he knows that but look at him, he's so concerned you would think she was in a car accident"
Abigail and Anna watched all of this with interest. Back in the Sup realm with the kingdom division each kind stuck with its own for the most part, we're wolves lived in Kesh, Vampires in Daromia, winged men in Estebech and so on.
Mates were things they heard of or read in books, things they knew existed but didn't care to see.
Witches didn't have mates, why would they care about them?
Watching the two in the cafeteria brought something ripe. Something Abigail had never thought of.
She would never experience something like that. A soul made for her and her alone... And Azian definitely was not either. He and Khloe shared none of that.
The closest she had seen them touching in public was hand in hand. Or times when Khloe would sit on his lap. But it was quite evident Azian paid little to no attention about his mate.
He never asked about her, invited her over, and talked about at all.
Theirs was a curious case.
Ena touched Abigail lightly, "I bet you if I nicked Khloe’s arm Azian wouldn't even bat an eyelid. Even less his dragon"
She sighed rolling her head back, "time is running out, protector...”
Mariah stared at the three ladies in front of her, “so what you're saying is Khloe is not Kayas mate?" She asked still confused.
The women exchanged looks, "she has to be there is no other way" Ena replied.
She licked her lips, "there is no way she couldn't be she has all the qualities. She is powerful .her aura alone is unique just like his. She is immortal meaning she can withstand him, and all three of them recognized her as their mate at the same time"
Anna nodded, "yes. But why are they so distant? We need to fix this problem as soon as possible"
"Is it may be possible that Azian is still seeing his possession?"
"There should be no desire for Alpha to have a possession when he has a mate" Mariah countered her sister.
Abigail paused. She looked at Ena suspiciously, "we all know they are no magical rules in this world. So even the darkest magic is allowed?'
Ena’s eyebrows furrowed, “yes, that is true. I think I've mentioned before that here the dark arts are practiced freely among witches and none witches alike" she replied wondering where things were going to.
Abigail leaned back still think hard.
"Abigail?"
"In my aunts old spell book I once read an ancient spell. One that could make you. Make you change mates."
Ena’s eyes widened looking around them frantically as she hushed the girls.
"Mother Protector, it is impossible why Emma would have a dark spell in her spell book"
"She never did. It was more like information on the darkest spells ever known to exist"
"We should not discuss this here" Ena said finally standing up.
All three looked at her suspiciously, "do you know it-"
"Let us go home. I shall reveal it there" Ena replied still monitoring the area as if making sure no one had heard their conversation.
**
Ena took out a black small book from the shelf. It had been covered in dust and had been specifically wedged in between two larger books making it impossible for anyone to see.
She sat down by the three ladies in the small living room of her house.
The curtains had been drawn and everything was dark.
She looked at all of them sighing, "The spell Abigail talks about is not just any kind of Dark Magic" she opened the book flipping it.
"What is it?" Mariah whispered. Her throat felt dry as she anticipated the reply.
“This is the nameless book. Or rather, the book not spoken of"
She paused as she watched Abigail’s eyes widen, "My aunt wrote about this book, there are only two copies ever made"
"After the Megalos Machi and the dragons fell a second war fell. To see who would lead next, which race was more superior? The dark age"
Anna shivered as Ena went on, "for the protection of the witches, the mother protector at that time used spells greater than any other, and in those time drastic measures where used to protect our kind. Dark magic included. We are the only humanoid race in the Sup realm that did not need to have a mate to fully function so this spell was our greatest weapon" she said as she finally flipped the book.
The page was filled with ancient drawings and siblings in the Ancient languages of the past age.
"It took a mate from a mate. It left the wolves confused, the vampires wasted. It destroyed many good lives. Many not so bad people"
"The protectors used Dark magic?" Mariah echoed.
Abigail nodded, “and it was a weapon. That is how most survived, the spell to sacrifice a soul to create a portal and let the witches escape into this world was also dark magic, and it was dark times."
"Yes, but after the dark age it was no longer needed. See dark magic came with a price of its own, .a soul for a soul. Blood for blood. It was banished as soon as it was realized we were better off without it, the two copies of the nameless books were sealed away "
"So how come we have them?"
"A century ago someone broke into it, one copy swiped but they failed to get the other. A few years later your Aunt, Emma gave it to me to bring to this world. She said she knew it was safer off with me, in a world where no one knew such a thing existed."
"Why not just burn it?" Anna asked
Immediately a fire started right at the heart of the book then it stopped. Ena put her hand down withdrawing the fire, "it has been tried bit as you can see it can't be destroyed. This is not a regular book. This is not just dark magic,"
She leaned closer her ear near the book and grinned softly before asking them to do the same.
"You hear that?"
Anna's heart was beating fast as she put the book to her ear, she heard whispers of screams. She felt heat and torture. She heard pleas and people begging. A quiet wind that still seemed to be raging.
Then she heard a babies cries and folders sniffs, a husbands tears and woman's screeches.
She pulled back touching her heart, "what the hell is that?!"
Ena closed the book, "this book was never written. It wrote itself. What you heard was its ink, the souls it uses to carve each word. It captures every fear. Every last word. The tears that fell from its victims and with that it creates. We call this Soul Magic. The darkest in the world. Not one created. Or that was in the beginning of time. No. This is one we created one we fuel with every breathe we take. You want to destroy the book. You must destroy the whole world...”
"W-what’s this got to d-do with the spell?" Mariah asked with a slight stutter to her tone.
"The spell is the heart of the book. The very first soul spell...” Abigail explained.
"So, your theory is that someone used a soul spell on Azian?"
Abigail remained silent till Ena spoke up.
"It’s impossible. See dark magic has levels. Not just anyone can use the nameless book. I can't for example". She stood up replacing the book back, “and it isn't a simple spell. To do such a spell requires a lot more than just one soul involved.” she paused watching them, " you would have to know who the mate is, you would have to steal the soul. It’s just so complicated. One thing I could never do or any other witch well except Abigail."
Mariah turned to look at Abigail.
En a nodded, " a spell like that can only be done by a great witch, from the line of mother Alessia herself. There is no other which blood strong enough. Not even a third level witch"
En a sat down, “and we both know Abigail would never do such a thing...and she is the last of her line. Therefore there could be no way such would ever happen"
Abigail nodded. This had been far-fetched even in her head. But she still couldn't quite shake the feeling that she was missing something.
