Chapter 147: Chapter 147

Charlotte silently takes in what Azraiel just said.

I am sure she was a part of the Royal court

She tilts her head so that she can look at his face. It’s dark but her brand new werewolf vision lets her see every detail of his face.

“What do you mean by that?” Her voice a foreign sound on her lips.

His arms tighten around her. “The blood on the fabric smelled really strong, Charlotte which is very unusual if it indeed is from the day your mother entered the human land. The smell should have faded by now if she were any ordinary wolf. I smelled the same scent on the fabric too. If it was someone else’s blood, then I wouldn’t have smelled the same scent on that piece of dress too. The smell…” he trails and she sees him gulp, “The smell is strong. During that time, it was a common practice for the courtiers of the Royal court to swear a blood oath with the royals. The Blood oath not only prevented them from betraying the King and the Queen but it also added to their power. The power of the King and Queen was definitely more than that of a normal wolf. In times of need and threats, those who swore a blood oath could call upon the royals to get out of the dangerous situation. It also enabled the King and the Queen to mindlink their subjects even without close proximity. It was helpful during disasters. Also, those who swore blood oath could never disobey the King and Queen. The blood oath wouldn’t let them and kill them before they could disobey their commands.”

He pauses.

“At that time, not just anyone was able to become part of the Royal court, only those who were valuable and strong could swear the blood oath as it wasn’t easy for just about anyone to let the power of the royal’s flow through their body. They had to drink the King and Queen’s blood to swear the oath. After the blood oath, a part of the royal’s power flew through their veins. When I say power, I mean strong, magical power, Charlotte.”

The seriousness on his face scares her a bit but she continues listening to him not wanting to interrupt.

“That power flows from the Luna to the King and Queen on the day of the coronation. It’s a piece of the Moon Goddess’ power which is extraordinary. Even the royals have to prepare their body for that power to flow through them. The blood on the dress smelled like that of someone who have sworn the blood oath, Charlotte.” He adds quietly.

Charlotte gulps at the realization of this knowledge.

Her mother could have sworn the blood oath to the King or Queen. She could have been a courtier of the Royal court of the werewolf kingdom.

“How can you be sure that the blood smelled like that of someone who swore the blood oath?” Her heart beats in her chest wildly and she is pretty sure that Azraiel can feel and hear it too.

“Because I have smelled it before. Remember I told you about my Aunt Caitlyn’s father-in-law being the Beta of the King?” he asks her.

She nods, recalling that particular bit of information. It was the first time he mentioned Daniel too.

“He swore the Blood Oath to the King. After his death, Aunt’s husband, Uncle William became the Beta of the King and swore the blood oath too. I used to visit them a lot when I was young. We- We lost Uncle William in the fire at the King’s Castle as he was at the palace on that for some business.”

She feels his pain at having lost so much. She could feel he was close to him, so she silently brushed her lips on his neck in understanding.

He continues in response. “He used to spar with me jokingly when I was young. He was powerful, so powerful and with the power of Luna flowing through his veins, he became even more powerful and strong. I still remember that he was once visiting our pack when a young pup crossed his path. My uncle didn’t even do anything to him, he just smiled at the pup but he was so scared of him that he started shaking and pissed himself. I was a little better than that since I was of Alpha blood but only a little. I was scared of him too when I first met him. Had my mother and Aunt not held me when he was in front of me that day, I would have pissed myself too. His scent and aura always stood out from others. I can’t forget the smell even if I tried to. It’s ingrained in my mind and that of my wolf forever.”

He stops to catch his breath. Charlotte can feel his emotions running wild. She knows if she tries to get into his mind, she’ll find the walls high and strong. He never lets her see his pain which has to change.

So she pulls herself up a bit and pecks his lips. “You know I can be there for you like you are always there for me, right?” She whispers against his lips, letting her emotions convey what she can’t.

“I know, love, I know.” He kisses her back.

He outs her head on his chest again, sighing loudly.

Good, she thinks to herself as she finally feels his emotions seep through the mindlink.

“The blood on the dress smells powerful just like the scent of my Uncle.” She finds him hesitating.

“What else?” She pushes him to speak what’s on his mind.

“The blood actually smells more powerful than that of my Uncle’s.” He breathes and she frowns.

“If she was someone so close to the King and Queen, maybe we can find her in some official records?” She doesn’t want to let the hope in her chest bloom but she just can’t help it. That little seedling was planted the moment she opened that bag pack. The thought that she could now know who her parents were makes her feel scared and happy and hopeful and everything that she has suppressed all her childhood.

“We can if she was openly close to the King or Queen.” He answers sceptically.

“What do you mean?” She asks confused about what he just said.

“Many wolves that were close to the King and Queen weren’t openly vocal about the same. Like their personal bodyguards, the loyal personal servants and maids, the trusted friends, or those that the royals liked to keep close often swore the blood oath. Though it was mandatory to keep official records of such werewolves, the rules were easily bypassed. The names were often not recorded to keep the element of surprise if needed. Most Kings and Queens didn’t want everyone else to know who their loyal companions were out of fear of safety. Even though their scents would clearly tell the tale of their power, their names weren’t recorded officially as they didn’t swear the oath in front of everyone with the proper protocols.”

“So, my mother could have sworn the blood oath officially or unofficially?” Charlotte pondered on the thought. It would make so much sense that she was unofficially close to the royals.

Azraiel must have sensed her train of thought as he kisses her head again and said, “I will ask Daniel to pull all the official records available, tomorrow. Maybe he would recognize the scent or the language in the book too. It will take some time, but we will find her. I promise we will find your mother, Charlotte.” She believes him. Every word he uttered was true.

As she drifts off to sleep in her mate’s arms, she lets that seed of hope in her heart bloom into a small bud with a smile on her face.
