Chapter 148: Chapter 148
The next day began earlier than Azraiel would have liked.
With every member of Charlotte’s pack now completed shifting, they need to maintain records of each and every member according to the supernatural being they transformed into after their shift.
Charlotte left early in the morning to ensure that her pack members weren’t having any adverse symptoms after the shift. She also wanted to discuss with Nicholas and Jamie about the training and further course of action as a pack. Theo accompanied her to the woods.
They still haven’t figured out the whole Theo acknowledging her as his Alpha thing and it seemed like no one wanted to discuss anything about the matter.
Azraiel left for the packhouse at the same time. He barely slept last night even though his mate was safe and protected in his arms. The matter with Theo and the contents of the backpack left by Arthur keep coming back to his mind every other second. His men have been tracking Arthur and Austin ever since they noticed them on the camera. He didn’t want to spook them by capturing them or else they’ll never know what those two are planning. From what he has gathered, Austin has been keeping eyes on Arthur for a long time too. When he saw Arthur coming to the woods with the bag, he followed him here to know what was going on. As far as he knows, Austin is unaware of the contents of the bag.
But some question keeps haunting him.
Why did Arthur drop those things at the edge of the wood after all this time? How did he know that Charlotte was alive and in the woods? Also, how the hell did he appear in the states again without getting noticed by his men?
He’ll need to increase the security of the pack.
A lot of things were running through his mind.
At last, he decided to put everything at the back of his mind and consult Daniel first.
When Azraiel tells everything that has happened in the past twenty hours to Daniel, the expressions on his face change so many times that Azraiel can’t even begin to count.
Azraiel passes the lilac fabric to Daniel. “Tell me what you think about the smell.”
Daniel’s brows furrow as he sniffs the bloodied fabric.
“What?” Azraiel pushes him when Daniel doesn’t say anything.
“Blood oath.” He murmurs.
Azraiel waits for him to say more.
“I-I” Daniel stutters. “If this belongs to whom I think it does, the whole werewolf world would be upturned upside down.” His face grows serious.
Azraiel’s heart thunders in his chest. He gulps audibly as the reality crashes down on him.
“I take it you already suspected it.” Daniel remarks as he takes in the expression on Azraiel’s face.
“I did,” Azraiel answers gravely. “I told Charlotte that her mother probably was a courtier who swore the blood oath to the King and the Queen.”
“I’d advise you to keep saying that until we know for sure.” Daniel puts the fabric aside and rubs his palms over his face.
“If that Austin is really killing people from the Black Onyx pack, then he has every intention of resurrecting the pack and leading it. I’m pretty sure he is gathering an army for the same.” Daniel pauses. “Train her.”
Azraiel blinks at him.
“She is a weapon, Azraiel.” Daniel says with urgency. “We still don’t know what she is, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If we don’t know about her true form, neither will our enemies. Train her so that she can use this as an advantage in the battlefield.” He gives Azraiel a look when he sees the resistance on his face.
“I know she is your mate and the battlefield is the last place you’ll want to see her. But you know better than me that she is not an ordinary wolf, even with the uncertainty regarding her lineage, she is extraordinary. So, train her, and let her know that she can be selectively dangerous instead of threatening the existence of everyone around her. Ask her to train her pack too, just like her they aren’t ordinary too.”
Azraiel doesn’t agree completely and instead chooses to say, “Let me think about this.”
“I’ll take that.” Daniel says softly probably realizing what it means to see a mate surrounded by the enemies.
“Also, you need to talk to other Alphas and ask them to join you. You need them as your allies before they join Austin in this war.” Daniel says gravely. “I’ll do whatever I can to secure the official resources from the werewolf council.”
Azraiel nods and leans back. “Thank you.” He says sincerely to the man who has acted as his father on countless occasions.
“Don’t thank me yet, boy!” Daniel scoffs. “IF she is who we think she is, then the whole werewolf community including me will be thanking you!”
Azraiel’s lips finally tilt into a smile.
Daniel leaves after that and Azraiel checks the security of the pack with Kira.
After a while in the afternoon when the rush settles and everything goes quieter, he mindlinks Matt to come to his office.
“Alpha!” He greets Azraiel with a bow and enters.
“Sit.” Azraiel motions towards the couch.
“I-I heard about Theo.” Matt says, his face etched with sadness.
Azraiel nods. He forgot that after him, Matt would be the most impacted by Theo’s absence in the pack. Theo is not only Matt’s Gamma but also one of the closest friends. The three of them were trained together to take these ranks since they were born. There’s a lot that they have endured together and survived.
He’ll have to talk to Kira too. She too would be impacted by this and after the episode she had when her mate rejected her, he doesn’t want to take any chances.
“I want to you to start looking for a Gamma, Matt.” The surprise on Matt’s face is visible.
“I know Theo hasn’t taken a decision yet, but I have a feeling he will join Charlotte’s pack. We’ll need to fill the Gamma position as soon as that happens. Keeping that position blank will only create more problems for us. Ask Kira for help in the training fields.”
The werewolf world places a huge a degree of importance on hierarchy and ranks. Any position left unattended would invite threats from other packs as they would deem their pack weaker without a Gamma.
“Yes, Alpha.” Matt hesitates but then decides to say it anyway, “Have you thought about merging the two packs?”
Azraiel’s face says it all.
Gods, yes! He has thought about merging their packs countless times but the very uncertainty of Charlotte’s form and that of the power of her pack stops him from voicing the thought.
He can’t put his pack in danger!
This means he can’t even propose this idea till he is sure that her pack poses no threat to anyone outside their pack.
“I have.” He speaks carefully. “But I don’t want to ask Charlotte about this until I’m sure that our pack won’t be in any danger. Besides, we’ll also have to ensure that our pack is ready for them.”
Matt nods in understanding.
“There is this other thing that I want to discuss.” Azraiel begins, his eyes darkening at what he says next, “I want you to track down Arthur with Kira. Bring him here to the pack, it’s high time that we meet Charlotte’s dear uncle!”
