Chapter 122: Chapter 122
Matt stares at the young pup locked in the dungeons. He knows Caleb can sense his gaze as he keeps shifting from one position to another. With a sigh, he turns his head to the side.
For some fucked up reason he feels bad for this pup. Maybe it’s because he lost his parents when he was young or maybe it’s just the poor state that he is in. But something tugs at his heart as he looks at the half-grown wolf.
He is told that Caleb’s wolf is white. While he can’t sense anything more than human from him, he can tell that he is a survivor. The has survived till now and he will survive in the future. Even if he turned out to be dangerous, Matt doesn’t think Charlotte would let anyone touch a hair on his body.
The rattling of the main door makes him look up. Theo walks down the stairs as quietly as he knows to and comes to stand beside him. “Is he okay?” Theo mindlinks Matt.
“Yeah. He’ll survive.” Matt answers.
“So, I came here with Katya earlier and she felt that someone was watching her when we were in the woods. A few minutes ago, Alpha said that she felt that again and asked to check the camera footage. We didn’t find anyone but I know better than to doubt a witch’s intuition.”
Matt frowns.
“Actually, I’ve felt the same since we came back from her house. I just didn’t say anything because I checked for myself and found no one.”
“I think there is magic involved.” Theo says after contemplating it for a bit.
Matt nods. “It’s possible.”
“For now, I’ve sent some of our men to guard her house and increased the security at the borders.”
Both of them quietly observe the wolf lying on the cold dungeon floor in a fetal position.
“What do you think about him?” Matt asks Theo.
“I- I don’t think he is a Trueblood but I do believe that he is one of Charlotte’s pack members. Nothing else can explain why he thought it was a good idea to enter such a dense forest when he could have literally flown anywhere to run away from Richard.”
Matt agrees. “I think the same. I just-I feel like we are getting nowhere.”
Theo looks at Matt when he says that. Matt sees the look on his face and elaborates.
“We have been going around in circles trying to solve this mystery for once and all but every time we succeed little, something else comes up and complicates it even more. It’s going to be her shift in four days and we still have no idea what she might turn into or if we would have a hundred weird supernaturals camped outside our border.”
Theo gives him a look that says ‘he understands’.
“I know I am a prisoner but can you guys not drill holes in my back with your stares?” Caleb sits up in frustration and both Matt and Theo give him an irritated poker face if it’s even possible.
“Seriously?” He buries his head in his hands.
Matt watches amused as Caleb takes five deep breaths just like Charlotte did when she first came here.
“Pleaseeeee?” he tries giving them puppy eyes.
“You know what? We’ll leave you alone if you tell us everything that has happened since you met Richard.” Theo says and walks up to the dungeon.
“Again? I already told you everything.” Caleb whines.
“Well, tell us again.” Theo snaps.
Matt hides his chuckle and walks closer to the cell.
“Okay…okay…” Caleb backs away and sits cross-legged. “But you’ll let me sleep after that?”
“Yes, absolutely.” Theo grins.
Matt can bet that Theo has already started considering Caleb a part of Charlotte’s pack and will never harm him.
“So, after Richard asked me to help him as I’ve already told, he wanted me to spy on Charlotte.”
“Did you notice anything out of normal while doing that?” Theo questions.
“No.” Caleb shakes his head. "As I said, both Richard and I were convinced that she was just human and not supernatural until Alana came along.”
Theo nods.
“Tell me what you and Richard talked about. He helped you control your wolf, right? Tell me how he behaved, did you suspect his motives ever?”
“Uh- no.” Caleb glances at them. “I knew that he wasn’t looking for his siblings because he looked much older than Charlotte but- but I never could have guessed that he wanted to kill her. He was like a big brother to me. He helped me learn how to control my wolf, how to use the senses, and how to stay hidden amongst the humans. I really considered him my mentor.” Caleb chuckles sadly. “If not for the magic covering my wolf’s color, he’d have killed me as soon as he could.”
“Hmm…are you sure that you remember nothing else that could be helpful to us?” Theo pushes again.
“I don’t remember anything of sorts at the moment. But- ever since I’ve been on the run, I have wondered about Alana. My best guess is that Richard killed her to cover his tracks but from what I know, she was a powerful witch. It wouldn’t have been easy for him to kill her.”
Theo takes in what Caleb just said and then grins.
“Cool. You can sleep now.” Theo stands up and turns to exit.
“Thank you!” Caleb says and goes back to his fetal position in the cell.
Matt follows Theo to the corner of the huge hall.
“What do you think?” Matt mindlinks Theo.
“Yeah..I don’t think he is lying but we’ll know more in the morning when Katya strips off the magic. But I think he is right about the witch Alana. Katya said that she is some sort of an outcast who was thrown out of the coven for practicing forbidden magic.”
“Yeah…I think she is alive. If she was strong enough to detect the magic on Caleb so easily then it seems unlikely that she’d be outsmarted by him.” Matt says.
“Let me find out more about her.” Theo says and Matt nods. Theo leaves the dungeons and Matt follows him out.
“I’ll patrol the borders once. See you in the morning.” Matt says and leaves.
Theo too starts walking back toward the packhouse.
Once inside his office, he calls his men looking for Richard.
“Find out what you can about the witch named Alana Seashore. I’ll send you her description.”
Theo walks to the bookshelf and pulls out his parents’ journals again. No matter how many times he has read them, it still feels like he is missing something that is right in front of him. It is now confirmed from Katya’s mother’s journals that his pack knew about Charlotte’s mother and grandmother and possibly about her pack too. But why the hell are there no documents, or shreds of evidence to prove the same?
Sighing in disappointment, he goes back to his chair and leans back. He has met Charlotte’s pack and for some reason, they feel more familiar than they should. He hasn’t told this to anyone but he has been thinking about joining Charlotte’s pack instead of asking Samantha to join his pack. He hasn’t made a decision yet but he is definitely leaning toward it. The most he is worried about is Azraiel and Matt’s reaction if he leaves the pack.
He keeps overthinking about it until his phone rings.
“Yup?” It’s the news about Alana.
As soon as he hears the news, Theo’s whole face changes.
He quickly cuts the call and opens up the images he has been sent. As he scrolls through them, his eyes see what’s in front of him but his mind screams that something is wrong.
He looks at the dead body in the picture, at the whole news article and yet he feels that something is amiss.
Is Alana really dead or this is a stunt to throw them off her tracks?
