Chapter 121: Chapter 121

“She actually looked just like you…except she had blue eyes.”

Katya’s breath gets stuck in her throat when she hears Caleb say that.

It is true that she looked a lot like her mother but had her father’s green eyes. If Caleb has indeed seen her mother, then this is another chapter of mystery added to the never-ending book of mystery they have been trying to decode.

“Are you sure? Do remember anything else…any conversation or something that struck as odd?” Theo asks the question when he sees that Katya needs some time to take in the information.

“Not really…Her face was clear in my memory but seeing her made it even more evident.” Caleb says pointing at Katya. “I just remember taking sweets from her. She was kind to me as she played with me sometimes when the older kids refused to let me play with them. Other than that, I never saw her except at the park. Once I was adopted I forgot about her.”

Katya nods, consoling herself that he was a kid and he doesn’t remember when all she wants to do is grab his shoulders and shake them violently and ask him, “What more do you remember?”

“Thank you.” She smiles instead. “Get some rest. We’ll talk more tomorrow.”

Katya looks at Theo and then both of them walk out of the dungeons. As soon as they are out, Katya inhales deeply as if the presence of Caleb was suffocating her.

“What do you think?” Theo asks her as they make their way back to the pack.

“I don’t think he is lying.” Katya admits. “There is no way that he took a wild guess about my mother’s eyes so confidently.”

“Yeah…” Theo agrees. “Do you think she cast the spell to protect him?”

Katya takes some time to answer that. “Maybe…or maybe not. If he is seventeen right now, then this must have happened before he was adopted which would be around 10-12 years ago. My mother was healthy at that time and she did travel a lot for work. It’s possible that she knew about the white wolves and also about the danger to them.”

Theo doesn’t speak as he knows she isn’t done yet.

“What- what I don’t understand is why did she feel the need to protect the white wolf? It’s not like he belonged to the Blue Orchid pack. My mother wasn’t loyal to anyone else other than the Alpha of the Blue Orchid pack. Why would she help random wolves?” Katya sounds confused and hates it.

She shakes her head to ward off the feeling that she is missing out on something crucial here.

“Anyways, I’ve brought some of her journals with me. Maybe she wrote something about it in them.”

“Maybe. Let me know if you need help with those journals.” Theo says and quietens down.

“Sure. Thanks.”

None of them speak until they reach the pack. “I suppose you want to talk to the Alpha?” Theo says.

“Yeah. It’s best that he knows everything.”

“Mhmm. Go ahead. I’ll head to the camp where other species are.” Theo says goodbye and turns back.

Katya rushes through the pack to reach Alpha’s office.

As she enters the building, she notices the quietness and for some reason, it bothers her. Shaking off the weird feeling, she knocks on Alpha’s door twice and enters when she hears his voice.

“Sit.” He says and leans back in his chair.

Katya quickly narrates the whole conversation between Caleb and her.

“So, most probably your mother cast the spell that has been protecting him all his life.” Azraiel comments.

Katya just nods.

“Go through her journals, okay? Maybe we’ll get some clue there.” Azraiel says.

“Yeah…from what I felt, the spell is strong but I can try connecting to my mother to know what kind of magick it is,” Katya says.

“Good. But don’t exert yourself. Charlotte’s shift is going to happen in a few days no matter what and I’d rather have you by my side in case anything goes wrong instead of knowing everything. So, take care of yourself.” Azraiel says softly.

Katya nods and feels grateful for his words. She knows he cares even though sometimes he fails to put it in words.

A few years back when they were on a rescue mission to save Ayleen, there were times when he had put his life on the line to save Katya’s and she’d be utterly grateful for the rest of her life for that.

“Go home. Get some rest.” Azraiel says to her and stands up.

They leave the building together and once again Katya is surrounded by the feeling that someone is watching her. She pauses while walking which causes Azraiel to stop and look at her.

“What’s wrong?” He knows something is up because she definitely has an alert mode face on.

She pulls out her phone and types the same to show him. They are surrounded by supernaturals who have sensitive hearing. So most probably if anyone’s watching her without being seen then they can hear her too.

Azraiel quickly glances at the screen and puts on a neutral face.

“Charlotte wants to talk to you about something. Why don’t you have dinner with us?” Azraiel swiftly turns them in the direction of his house. Katya nods and follows him. She’d be safer with him than alone at the house.

None of them say anything the whole way though she could feel that he is on high alert and most probably has already mindlinked a few warriors to check the borders.

When Charlotte opens the door he is clearly surprised to see Katya with Alpha Azraiel. Katya smiles awkwardly.

“Come in.” Charlotte smiles and invites her in.

As soon as they enter the house, Azraiel takes a look around and then walks to shut the curtains where they are open.

“Are all doors shut?” He asks Charlotte.

“Uh-yeah.” She looks confused and rightfully so.

“What’s wrong?”

“When we left for home from the office, Katya felt that someone was watching her.” Azraiel says.

Katya looks at her questioning gaze and nods. “I felt the same when Theo and I went to the dungeons to talk to Caleb.”

Azraiel nods. “I couldn’t sense anyone, but it is very much possible. Let me confirm with the warriors. If someone was indeed there, they would have seen it in the cameras.” Azraiel says and heads to his study.

“Are you okay?” Charlotte asks Katya and offers her a glass of water.

“Thanks.” Katya and Charlotte sit on the sofa. “I am fine.”

“Katya- Thank you for everything. I know you didn’t have to do all this but you are doing this anyway.” Charlotte says to Katya.

“I think I had to Charlotte.” Katya smiles. “I read some of my mother’s journal entries today and I think my mother knew your mother and grandmother.”

Charlotte looks surprised as hell. “R-really?” Her voice wavers at the mention of her mother.

“Yeah…I have brought some more journals….I am hoping she has mentioned your mother in them.”

Azraiel walks in the hall in the next moment, “They’ve checked the camera footage, there was no one.”

Katya frowns in stress. Her intuition is telling her that something is amiss.

“You should stay here for the night.” Charlotte says when she sees her frown.

“uh-no..it’s alright. I’ll be fine.” Katya stands up.

“Charlotte is right, Katya. If you feel someone is watching you then it could be true.” Azraiel says to Katya.

“No Alpha. It’s fine. I-I feel like whoever it is won’t approach me until I am alone. It’d be better to stay at my home tonight.” Katya explains.

Azraiel nods in understanding. “Okay. As you say…but let me at least put some men around your house and remember you are family- okay?” Azraiel says in a brotherly mode and Katya just nods because she feels she would cry if she spoke.

Azraiel may not be her real brother but he has been looking out for her ever since she could remember. Sure, he doesn’t say anything but she knows better than anyone that actions speak louder than words.

Katya turns and gives Charlotte a smile.

“I’d have felt better if you stayed, but as you want. Just call us if you feel like something isn’t right, okay?” Charlotte says to Katya.

Katya nods. “I will.”

“I’ll walk you home.” Azraiel says and follows her out.

As Katya waves at Charlotte she feels a sense of satisfaction bloom in her heart. She is amidst people whom she was meant to help. Maybe it is destiny or maybe it’s a coincidence, whatever it is she is just glad to be surrounded by people who care!
