Chapter 117: Chapter 117
“Richard. His name was Richard.”
As soon as Azraiel and Charlotte hear that name their mind goes on alert mode.
By the looks of it, Azraiel instantly mind links his warriors to be ready for anything.
Either Caleb doesn’t notice the shift in the air or he is too stupid for his own good as he continues speaking.
“Richard-he… he said he could help me deal with the werewolf thing on one condition.”
“What condition?” Charlotte asks.
“He-uh wanted me to help him find his family.”
“Please continue.” It was an order even though Azraiel said please.
“He…he told me that his parents got killed in a werewolf war, but his siblings survived as they ran away. He wanted my help in finding them. I didn’t believe him but I knew of no other werewolf and I really was having a hard time controlling my wolf.” Caleb paused and looked at Charlotte.
“One day he took me to your house. He said that you could be his sister but he isn’t sure since you were all very young when the war happened. Of course, that was all a lie…but I didn’t know it then, though I had my doubts. He put me on the task of spying on you. I used to follow you and you had no clue. In return, he taught me how to control my wolf and its hunger.” Caleb says.
Charlotte feels like the dumbest person on the planet for not realizing that she was being followed for almost a year.
“Why did he feel that Charlotte could be his sister?” Azraiel questions him.
“Because she was one of the students at H.O.P.E. mission. He told me that he has been looking into the students of the H.O.P.E. mission for years since the supernaturals are most likely to be out casted in schools…and he wasn’t really wrong. In fact, I thought I found him but in reality, he found me since he was tracking me from the H.O.P.E. mission.”
“I told him everything and after a while he was convinced that you are just a human…until…” Caleb frowns.
“Until?” Charlotte pushes him to continue.
“Until a witch came to visit him.” Caleb looks disturbed by the mention of the witch.
“Her name was Alana.” He quietly continues. “The two of them…Alana and Richard, they were in a sort of relationship. Richard used her help to determine if people he suspected of being his siblings were protected by magic or not. He asked her help in your case too.” Caleb looked sad when he uttered his next words.
“You were!”
Charlotte blinks slowly at him.
“You were protected by magic. She said that the magic was really powerful since your wolf never forced you to shift!” Caleb reveals.
“What happened after that?” Azraiel asks after a few seconds.
“Richard started paying more attention to you. He convinced Sarah with Alana’s help to go out with your uncle and convince him to kill you. I- I had no idea that he wanted to kill you. At that time, I was just helping him as a way to pay him back for his help. He was sort of a mentor for me.” Caleb paused, most likely reminiscing about the time.
“But- but one day, I called Richard to tell him about your whereabouts but the call didn’t get disconnected when our conversation ended. I overheard the conversation between Alana and Richard. They were fighting!” Caleb gulps. “Your uncle- he didn’t want to kill you, despite the magic herbs Sarah has been giving him. So, Richard wanted Alana to kill you with her magic. That’s when I first found about his true intentions for you. Alana refused to do his bidding saying that you were too strong for her to kill. She could die while trying to kill you. They said many things to each other and I almost disconnected the call until Alana said something.”
He stopped.
“What did she say?” Charlotte asks him in a hushed voice.
Caleb looks at her with so much sadness in his eyes that she almost wants to get him out of that cell.
“She was insulting Richard. She said that he is clueless and dumb…so much so that he has no idea that the guy living with him is indeed a white wolf protected by magic.”
Caleb looks at them quietly.
“He was talking about me!”
Charlotte’s lips part at the revelation.
“So you weren’t a white wolf from the beginning?” Daniel asks Caleb.
He shakes his head. “No. My wolf was brown. It…It changed its color when I entered the woods two days back.”
“So, what happened after you heard that your wolf is white?” Charlotte asks.
“When Alana told him about me, Richard refused to believe her. He said that she is just messing with his head. But after a moment of quietness, he muttered that he’ll kill me. That’s when I knew that I have to run. So, I did. I ran away. I changed city to city every two days, afraid that he’d find me. But he never did.”
“When was this?” Azraiel asks immediately.
“Around two months ago.”
Charlotte and Azraiel look at each other in that moment.
This must have been around the same time when she was bitten. Maybe that’s the reason why he hasn’t been able to catch Caleb. Because he himself is on the run!
“How do we know that you aren’t lying to save yourself? Maybe you wanted to kill Charlotte and are an accomplice to Richard sent by him here in order to get information from us.” Azraiel says suspiciously.
“You can believe whatever you want. I am not lying. Richard has been killing werewolves that he suspected to be his siblings. I know it’s a lie. But my best guess is that he has been after the white wolves all along. I don’t know why but I know that I am in just as much danger as her.” Azraiel doesn’t say anything.
“We’ll send some water and food. You won’t be leaving this cell until we know for sure that you are not our enemy. You try to do anything to harm anyone here and I swear on everything I consider holy; I will rip you to shreds.” Azraiel’s eye flash golden as he warns Caleb.
Caleb who has been pretty ignorant understands the threat clearly as he shifts further back into the wall and nods his head.
Azraiel is the first one to leave and Daniel and Charlotte follows him out.
The new information is flooding her brain and she has no idea how to react to it.
As soon as they are seated in the car, Azraiel speaks up. “The forest magic reversed some part of magic done on Caleb but there is still some magic that’s protecting him.”
Daniel nods. “Yes. We need a powerful witch to undo the rest of the magic to know if he is a trueblood.”
“I thought the wolves had to pass the Trubelood tests in order to be labelled as one.” Charlotte finally says the doubt that has been in her mind.
“They do. But you see, when the Trueblood status was first given by the Moon Goddess it wasn’t because of passing of some tests, it was actually after the Alpha of the Black Onyx pack overcame the hardships of life. He passed the tests of Moon Goddess in real life, Charlotte.” Daniel answers her.
“So, it a wolf has passed what is deemed to be the tests of life, he is a Trueblood, whether or not granted the status of the same by the council?” She asks.
“Yes. Such status is granted by the Moon Goddess herself.” Daniel says.
“Even if Caleb turns out to be a Trueblood, we won’t have much to be afraid of since he has no idea what Truebloods are let alone how to use his powers.” Azraiel assures her.
“I don’t think he is lying.” Charlotte quietly adds.
“Yeah. Neither do I.” Daniel mutters. “That boy is pretending to be confident since he has no idea if we are his friends or enemies. But I really think that he is in just as much danger. I believe that whoever this Richard is…he is afraid that other white wolves may come after him and as a measure to eliminate threat he wants to kill them all before he gets killed.”
“You are right. I was thinking the same!” Azraiel says.
Azraiel goes silent for a moment and then says, “Let’s just hope that Katya finds something useful at her home and strips the magic from Caleb or else we’ll be back to where we started from!”
