Chapter 114: Chapter 114
"Yes, Detective Leon?"
Rocky turned and looked at him. Leon did not hesitate and said, "This is a high-profile case, and we are moving very swiftly because we have all the evidence. Also, with the person your father tried to defame, this becomes a whole lot more complicated."
"I don’t know if he had a grudge against them to try something this dispicable..." Leon muttered under his breath, adding, "We have the warrant to search the mansion and all the businesses, among others, so we will be there in about an hour, if not less."
Rocky processed the information and then thanked him, wondering why the detective had given him that information. However, he knew that there were certain things that he had to verify for himself; after all, there was nothing he could do apart from contacting his father’s lawyer.
About half an hour from then, he was in his dad’s study and looking through the contract. The initial one that Shelby had been forced to sign.
He could see a few dried drops of water indentation on the paper, which he knew certainly were tears.
"Dammit! Why did Dad do this?!"
Rocky had no idea what he had been looking for in his dad’s study. It was like he was looking for evidence to refute the accusations made against James, but then, he found more than he could stomach.
A few other documents confirmed the drug accusations, amongst other things that he wished he could unsee. He did not know whether his father was overly confident or just plain stupid to even leave small packs of drugs around his office, but for some reason, Rocky was not surprised.
"So, this was why the thugs called me the Boss. They knew that I was James’ son!"
Rocky didn’t even know how he felt about that.
He clenched his hands, rumpling the contract in that process.
"Why does sis Shelby make herself this way? Why does she allow herself to be trampled on? Sis, why?!"
The contract was so absurd that his view of Ian plummeted to the lowest level. Rocky did not blame Ian for his father’s predicament, though. James was responsible for his own actions. As a son, Rocky had seized ’worshipping’ his father or holding him in high esteem very early in life.
James was text-book perfect in many ways. Unfortunately for him, his son was one of the few people who knew his true colours. He never thought that his Dad dealt with drugs, but the knowledge made many things make sense, and Rocky knew that it was not above his Dad to do this.
To add to it, Rocky had always suspected his father did not like Shelby. He was certain of it but did not dare allow his thoughts there; except the contract in his hand was so despicable that he did not know what to do.
He did not dare let his mind wonder about the other things James had done to his sister. Shelby had experienced what one would refer to as psychological maltreatment at the hands of her stepfather, apart from the sexual innuendos.
A feeling of helplessness and frustration settled on him when he returned to his earliest memory of such correspondence.
"I can’t believe a decade has passed since that incident...."
He had been barely nine years old then and had been on his way to look for his favourite big sister.
Rocky had hidden underneath Shelby’s bed to surprise her; to date, he wished he had not.
That day, it had not taken long for him to fall asleep in that small space, but the sounds of voices woke him up.
"What did you say, young lady?!" James snapped!
"I am housing you and your mother so that your mother can have the best of life that she wants. Your mother is paying her due by spreading her legs wide for me. You should be thankful that you are not being asked to do that, too, with all this bewitching beauty of yours." These were words that were belittling enough and never suitable for a child’s ears.
James bent so that he was at eye level with Shelby.
"We are going to put that beauty of yours to use as your way of paying for your stay in this house!"
"B-but you’re my dad! How can you say that?"
"Hahahahaahaaa...... your dad? Your father is an irresponsible and good-for-nothing man who runs away from you to only god knows where. He did not like you and so he left! Why do you think that I will take care of his responsibility free of charge?"
Tears fell down young Shelby’s cheeks as she replied, "You are lying! He did not leave us! He died!"
"Same thing! What’s the difference?"
"You will put on those clothes and butt your eyelashes at the men who come to dinner today just like your mother does to please me! Do you understand?"
Shelby had sucked in her breath, but she had no way of protesting because from Rocky’s position underneath the bed, he could see his mother’s dress peeking out, and he knew that the two people in the room also knew of Clara’s presence. However, never once did Clara come to her daughter’s aid.
One might think that Rocky had misjudged his mother that day, but the justice in him had risen up high, and he had asked a seemingly innocent question that evening.
"Mum, you said that it was an adult-only dinner. Why does Shelby get to dress up so pretty and go there?"
"Its nothing for you to worry about. Your father wants Shelby there to try and convince his investors. You are still too young to understand this for now. Nothing will happen to your favourite sister, okay?"
What Rocky wanted to have told his mother was that, ’Sis Shelby is only thirteen!’ But he did not. He could only watch as Shelby entered the dining room of their home, playing house to the older gentlemen with lustful gazes; even in the eyes of a nine-year-old! He wondered why even Clara remained blind to all of these.
From that day, young Rocky’s mind was opened to the realities of his home. He had never let anyone know of his presence in that room that day and made it his mission to ensure that his sister was protected in his own way.
The most frustrating thing for Rocky growing up was that Shelby never once complained.
Bringing out his phone, Rocky sent out two messages: One was to their family’s lawyer, and the next text message was to his sister.
"Siiiiiissssss, isn’t it about time that I met your husband? The honeymoon should be over, right?"
The reply came instantaneously:
"Sure, Rocky. You even beat me to it. I was about to contact you on this. How about tonight? We’re holding a big dinner here.... PS: Ava will be cooking!"
Rocky pocketed the phone, trying to make sense of Shelby’s reply.
’Why does she sound happy? Is she still trying to fool me? We’ll see!’
Then he was stuck in many emotional tornados. First, his crush was going to be there, and he was not sure how to face her after what he had done back at her apartment. His heart thumped wildly at the thought of the kiss he had forced on her.
’Let’s not be like dad in any way! I will make sure that Ava asks for a kiss before initiating such action! I only needed her to know that I was not a child and that I had a genuine interest in her. Even if she hates me, I would be glad if she dumps that Josh-guy!’
Second, he could not afford to not go for the dinner because he wanted to meet the famous Ian Thornston, who thought his sister was only good for a contract marriage.
Third, he had to figure out how to calm his mother.
’Should I bring her along to the dinner? NO! That would be a disaster and cry-party in the making!’ He quashed that thought before it was fully implanted.
Lastly, he did not even want to think of his father’s issues at all. James deserved what was coming to him, but then, after this, how would he and his mother survive? He knew for a fact that, they had to handle this their own way, considering that his stupid father had tried to defame and frame Ian.
Just then, a team of policemen ’barged’ into the home.
"Rocky! OMG! What are you people doing?! You took my husband, and now, you come here?"
Rocky could hear his mother shout. Rocky only took the marriage contract out, folding it neatly into his pocket. He did not touch anything else.
He walked slowly to meet the policemen.
"We have a warrant to search the mansion!"
Rocky said after inspecting the genuineness of the piece of paper.
They swiftly started their work, turning over everything in the house. All the materials, including hard disks, DVDs and media from his office, were also taken away.
"Rocky! Why would you let them do that!"
"Mum, they have a backing warrant."
"So, you’ll let them take everything?"
"Mum, it’s the law! We cannot do anything! Don’t worry, I have called our lawyer."
A sense of despair so strong settled on Clara as she watched them move things out of the mansion.
"Why?!!!!!" Clara screamed, dropping to her knees.
