Chapter 113: Chapter 113
Ingrid waited patiently. On the other hand, Samantha still had a scowl on her. She did not cause any trouble, though. She walked through the first adjacent room and then back through Gabriel’s room to the next one.
Finally, she came back out again and then returned to the initial room, firmly closing the door behind her. That was when Ingrid sprung into action, walking timidly to the remaining room. It became clear to the adult there then: Ingrid had waited for Samantha to make a choice in the two rooms before she entered the remaining one.
That spoke a lot about the character of the two girls.
Gabriel was in his own world, still bouncing and shrieking at the top of his voice on his bed. His enthusiasm was infectious.
Katie watched on as a small smile found its way to her. At the back of her mind, however, she was worried about how the adults would feel about these new arrangements. She knew that part of the reason that the children had been left to their own devices was their mother.
However, the mother’s sins would not be pushed to the children. She could not think of what Aliya had done, though, deserving of that treatment of her children. She was not guilt-free as she had also been part. Aliya had been a very sweet girl, and if anything, her only crime would have been leading Master Ian on when she was already engaged with children. The thing was, no one knew who led who on.
Katie sighed. These thoughts were best kept abay! After making sure that everything about the move was going smoothly, Katie left to attend to other tasks.
For the rest of the day, workers supervised by Suzie and Mike streamed in and out of the room, making sure that the three children were settled. They moved all the belongings from the old room and placed them where they should be in their individual new rooms.
Samantha still had a permanent scowl on her face but had relaxed her vigilance slightly. Upon entering her room, she gasped in disbelief before turning her face back to indifference.
A large poster bed sat in the middle of the room. It was almost twice as big as what she had been initially sleeping on in their old room. She walked around slowly, and of course, the best place for her was the bathroom.
’I have my own bathroom?’
She nearly let her inner thoughts slip, but she’d rather literally die than let anyone know of these thoughts. Even though she had initially shut the door to the connecting room, the workers still used her main one that opened into the corridor and streamed in and out of her place, to her annoyance. She finally settled on her bed later on in the day, closing the door firmly behind her to shut everyone out, including her siblings!
"They think that they can buy me off with this? That would be in their dreams!"
Ingrid was more grateful as Gabriel was excited. They made it a point to go find Ian and Shelby and thanked them.
"R-ocky! Wh-at took y-ou so lo-ng to come here?"
Clara’s hysterical voice met him as soon as he got to the T-Vino Island Local Police Station.
Her face was still wet with tears as fresh ones flowed down freely. At one point in time, she had stopped cleaning up the tears as her handkerchief had even gotten thoroughly wet.
"I-, your da-d. H-e," Clara couldn’t even make out a full sentence without her voice breaking and more tears flowing up.
"Is this woman stupid? The call that she had placed was to her young son? Doesn’t he look like a student?" One officer asked his friend, who shushed him.
"Shhhh!!!! What do you know about these rich families? They work in different ways than we understand!"
And the man was right! Clara really had no one trustworthy enough to call. She was illiterate, and even if they gave her any document, she would not understand what it meant. The one trustworthy person she could think of had been her children.
She had decided against calling Shelby as she was newly married, so her next best option and in her view, her only option had been to call her son. Clara had really tried to maintain her composure on the phone but that had only lasted seconds before she broke down into a miserable mess.
Rocky hugged his mum, "It’s okay, mum, I’m here now. Why do you let yourself cry this much? Just look at how red and puffy your eyes have become."
Clara hiccupped in his arms and allowed herself to be guided to a seat. Rocky then went up to the detective in charge.
Leon looked up and down at the young man who was in front of him but did not show any unwanted reactions. That was partly because he demonstrated wisdom beyond his age. He asked all the right questions, and Leon patiently answered all of them. Leon knew that he was all covered as he had done his homework this time. He had enough evidence to lockdown James Wendover for a lifetime and that was exactly what he would do.
’Is the boy really the son of that criminal? I find that hard to believe.’
When he had returned to the station with James, he had met countless ridicule from his colleagues. He was not perturbed with their ’I told you so looks’ because he was very much ashamed, but then Leon was also very happy with the evidence files that Ian had been so kind enough to get them.
He turned to look over at James, who was in a temporal holding cell and wondered what his in-laws had done for him to try to frame them.
"Young man, I suggest you get yourself a good lawyer to represent your dad but even with that, I think that the most they and get him may be a reduced sentence and I am not even sure that may be possible, h-"
"Don’t worry, detective. I will call my sister and her husband, Ian Thornsto-"
"Young man, I hate to break it to you, But I would advise against that-"
"Why? Anyway, don’t worry. He’s my brother-in-law, and it’s about time that I talk to him on this."
"You don’t understand, he-"
"What exactly do I not understand, Detective Leon?"
On her seat on the opposite side of where this conversation was taking place, Clara looked at them talk, letting her mind drift back to earlier.
When Clara received the call about James, she had been dumbfounded.
James? In the police station and for drugs? How did that even make sense? She had even thought it a prank, but countless phone calls to James had gone unanswered, so she had no choice but to drag herself to the police station to confirm, and her worst nightmare had come true. It was not a scam, but lo and behold, she had received the shock of her life. Her one and only husband, James, was really being processed on those charges.
James was her everything, and she could not see her future without him. If James left, then everything she had worked for in life would have been for nothing!
As her thoughts revisited these, Clara would never admit to anyone that her real first action point after confirming James’ issue had not been to contact her children.
Clara had initially first thought of her new friends in her circles since they were all fully connected to higher powers than she was. But she had been in a rude awakening! They had only been sucking up to her! They all came out with different excuses, one after the other. These were the prudent ones because, the rest had outright declined to help.
James also had enough connections in high businesses and the government, but the entity that had provided the evidence was the Thornstons family. He was related by marriage, but they still threw him under the bus. This said a lot, and many people washed off their hands. By the next day, it was all over town that James Wendover had tried to defame Ian Thornston. That was enough for all others to turn their backs on him, even including his drug circles!
"Detective Leon? Please enlighten me."
"Your father tried to-"
Leon went ahead and explained the whole morning to Rocky. He had a hunch that Rockwell Wendover had a much better head on his shoulders than his parents.
"We also found evidence to corroborate the video retrieved. His car had enough coke and other drugs to feed a whole section of the island .... And this is no exaggeration."
"You mean, my dad... towards Ian..."
Rocky lowered his head, his disappointment shooting through the roof.
Just as he turned, Leon said something to him that made him look at the detective in a new light.
Rocky turned and helped his mother out of the police station without even asking to see his father once! He had something he had to do first.
"Rocky? Why are we leaving? What of your dad?"
"Mum, it’s okay. There are a few things I have to check and try to get refuting evidence for dad, too."
"Ok, I’ll leave this up to you then."
After he got his mum home, he let Angela help Clara settle in for an early night, and he headed towards James’s study.
He started opening drawers, looking through them as fast as he could, but then, he stumbled upon something that made him stop everything and slump down!
"What is this?" He said, looking at the contract document in his hand.
