Chapter 66: Chapter 66
"Where were you when the emergency patient was brought in just now?"
"I went to the bathroom, why are you here?" ɴᴇᴡ ɴᴏᴠᴇʟ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀʀᴇ ᴘᴜʙʟɪsʜᴇᴅ ᴏɴ n͟o͟v͟e͟l͟f͟i͟r͟e͟.net
Lucy Eaton didn’t answer her and just turned around and left. Sarah Reed sniffed, "Rude."
A little after six in the morning, Mary Pond finally woke up.
Seeing her surroundings and then the man asleep at the bedside, her eyes suddenly turned red, tears welling up.
James Foster was extremely light in sleep; to be precise, he woke up a dozen times throughout the night, hardly getting any rest.
When he opened his eyes again, he found that she was awake.
They looked at each other.
"I paid your medical bills, and it was also my good friend who helped rescue you yesterday. I don’t ask for gratitude, just return the medical costs and the previous money to me."
"I will return it, I definitely will." Her tears welled up uncontrollably, "Thank you for saving me, and I’m sorry."
"No need to thank me, even if it was a dog, I would have saved it." He stood up, "I’ll go buy some food."
Ten minutes later, he came back with millet porridge and buns, adjusted the bed up, "I just asked the doctor, and he said you can only drink porridge now."
She nodded, just about to reach for the bowl when he paused for a moment, "Let me do it, aren’t you going to explain why you lied to me?"
"Because there was really no other way." She lowered her eyes, "My father is in the late stages of stomach cancer, and the family has long been in debt. We’ve sold everything that could be sold. I didn’t want to resort to selling my body for money, so I tried this method. I’ve made notes, and I will repay every penny in the future."
"Every penny? Just how many people have you tricked with this method?"
Thinking there were nineteen other simple-minded guys like him, James Foster didn’t know what to say.
"So there are many fools, not just me."
"I didn’t take you all as fools," Mary Pond explained, "I really had no choice. The money I earn from working is a drop in the ocean."
"If it’s in the late stage of cancer, then you should reduce his pain and let him live happily at the end of his life. Do you think there’s a chance to cure him? What’s the point of over-treating? Chemotherapy will only make him suffer more near the end!"
"I know, but I still can’t bear to watch him die just like that. Even if I lose both life and money, I don’t regret it. As long as I can keep him one more day, I feel like I still have a family. Maybe if I hang in there one more day, a miracle will happen."
"You’re really stubborn. Do you know what this is called? This isn’t filial piety; it’s essentially increasing your father’s suffering, both physically and psychologically." James Foster brought a spoonful of porridge to her mouth, "Your father could have left this world peacefully without so much pain, but you didn’t give him that chance, and you call this filial piety? I’m really speechless. Did you ever ask your dad for his opinion? He might have realized that his illness couldn’t be cured and hoped not to burden the family anymore, wanting to leave with no regrets."
Mary Pond looked at him as tears fell, staining her cheeks, her eyes reddening as a certain part of her heart suddenly felt like it was collapsing.
"My dad... said the same thing."
"Since your dad said so, let him enjoy his limited days, try to ease his pain, take good care of him, and tell him you will live well afterward. Don’t make him worry about you."
She nodded, crying, "You enlightened me, I was too attached to him."
James Foster sighed, "If you know it’s irreversible, why not look at it from another angle? What happened last night? How did you end up in an abandoned factory?"
"I was kidnapped there after coming off the night shift last night."
"It was one of the nineteen people I tricked. I don’t know how he found me."
"Do you want to call the police?"
"No need." Her voice was very low, "I have no face, I deceived others first, even if I die, it’s my own fault."
"Not bad, you have self-awareness." James Foster put down the bowl, "I have to work, so I won’t accompany you anymore. Take care of yourself."
"Give me your bank account number, I’ll repay you once I have the money."
Before leaving, James Foster sent the account number to her phone and said, "I’m not in a hurry for money, you can pay back slowly."
At the store, James Foster found Lucy Eaton checking the accounts. He went up and told her about the incident truthfully.
"Didn’t you think those things she said could be made-up stories...?"
"If lying for money shows poor character, then cursing your own father with cancer is truly morally corrupt. But however I look at it, she doesn’t seem like she’s lying."
"If it’s a lie, I’ll have Nathaniel Green check it out, then we’ll know."
"Good idea. If it turns out to be false, I definitely won’t be fooled by her a third time."
After leaving the store, she got in the car and assigned Nathaniel Green to investigate this matter, but it wasn’t only Mary Pond who was being investigated; Chloe White was also involved.
This was something she didn’t tell James Foster.
At the hospital, she went on rounds with Michael Paxton. When they reached Mary Pond’s ward, they found she wasn’t in her bed.
"Where is the patient Mary Pond?"
The nurse replied, "She completed the discharge procedures fifteen minutes ago and wouldn’t listen to any persuasion to stay."
Lucy Eaton frowned slightly and didn’t ask further questions.
Being very busy, she didn’t have the heart to think about this matter. She did two surgeries with Michael Paxton all morning, enough to be exhausted. On the operating table, she was completely focused, and after stepping off it, her tense nerves finally relaxed.
Just as she returned to the office, Nathaniel Green arrived.
Holding a lunch box, he placed it directly in front of her.
"The cafeteria food is bad. I’ll bring you lunch every day from now on."
It must have been especially arranged by Jacob Green, needless to say.
"Also, this is what you asked for." He handed her two documents.
"So fast?" Lucy Eaton took them.
"Then I’ll head back."
As Nathaniel Green was leaving, he happened to run into Sarah Reed.
Since he was wearing a mask, Sarah couldn’t see his face, but from his build, she could tell he was a handsome guy.
Seeing the lunch box on the desk, Sarah asked, "Dr. Eaton, was that handsome guy just now your boyfriend?"
Lucy Eaton didn’t seem to hear her, her gaze fixed on the documents in hand.
Sarah raised her voice a bit, "I’m talking to you, Dr. Eaton. Is it good to ignore people like that?"
"Private matter, no comment."
Sarah was speechless and rolled her eyes, "Why? Afraid someone might steal him from you?"
With no response, the office quieted down. Sarah took a sip from her cup and leaned against the table, leisurely watching Lucy Eaton.
Lucy Eaton paid no heed to her scrutiny.
