X District’s Police Department…

Assistant Jiang barged into the police station, rapidly wiping his sweat. His eyes looked from side to side, in search of his Boss. When the man had asked him to meet him at the police station, the assistant had instantly sobered up.

Thinking he had committed an unforgivable sin and his Boss wanted to detain him behind bars, he contemplated if he should run back to the other city and beg forgiveness from his grandfather. However, that was the hardest decision. It would only anger his Boss more.

Resigning to his fate, Assistant Jiang had decided to come and face the music.

Never did he expect to meet his Boss together with Mrs. Lim at the station. “Eh? What is happening?” The assistant looked confused.

The man was holding tight to the girl’s hand as if she would run away. “M– Mr. Lim–“

“You are late.” The man’s voice sent tremors down his body. Assistant Jiang hesitated to approach where they stood, until he heard a loud cry from one of the cells.

“Mr. Jiang! Mr. Jiang! You are finally here!” That was Mr. Su’s voice.

Assistant Jiang rubbed his ears to make sure he wasn’t hearing wrong. What was Mr. Su doing at the place? He was about to ask when more voices came from the cell together with Mr. Su’s voice.

“It is not our fault! Don’t blame us! Mrs. Su is the one to blame.”

“Ah! How is it my fault? Didn’t I give you money?”

“Shut up, woman! You’re not only ugly, you are bad-tempered. You hurt this innocent girl without my consent! Who told you she was chasing after me?”

“Is that what you’re going to say, Honey! Didn’t you ask for my help when they were bullying you?”

“Mr. Jiang, please tell me who this man is. He suddenly arrested us without telling us our faults.”

“All of you, shut your dirty mouths!” One of the constables yelled out a warning. The police station had suddenly become like a marketplace. They had piled all the criminals together in one place. Who knew they wouldn’t behave themselves?

“Mr. Lim, we are very sorry you have to witness this. Be rest assured, we will take good care of them,” The policeman said quickly.

Assistant Jiang was more confused by what was happening. Mrs. Lim didn’t say a word. While the man held her, she was leaning against the counter. The sleeve of her shirt was stained with a speck of fresh blood, and the assistant had so many questions in his mind.

Afraid that if he went near his Boss he might not survive another step, he carefully approached the constable and introduced himself.

“Erm, please what is going on?”

“You are Mr. Lim’s assistant, right?” The policeman answered him with his own question.

Assistant Jiang nodded in reply, darting a fearful glance at his Boss.

“We will need to take your statement. Mr. Su and his wife were caught in the act of breaking the society’s rules. While Mrs. Su asked people to destroy Mr. Lim’s property, Mr. Su is suspected of extorting money from the tenants.”

“And this lady?” Assistant Jiang asked, glancing at Annie.

“Her case is different. We don’t know what Mr. Lim wants to do with her.”

Assistant Jiang sighed in relief. Why would Mr. Su’s wife destroy the property, though? And Mr. Su extorting money…

“Put down your statement.” The policeman brought him out of his thoughts. He pushed a paper to him and gave him a pen. “Since you are the one who hired Mr. Su to look after Mr. Lim’s property, you have to bear witness.”

“Is that all?” Assistant Jiang had a feeling that this wasn’t over. His Boss was still glaring at him from where he stood. He couldn’t fend off the feeling that a terrible fate awaited him.

He put down his statement anyway. It wasn’t like he knew Mr. Su that much. So the assistant didn’t put in any good words about the man. When he was done, he gave the paper back.

“That is all, Mr. Lim. We are sorry for taking your time. You may now leave with the lady.”

Because they had to take the assistant’s statement, Andrew had to stay back until he arrived. Now that the police had gotten evidence after seeing it with their own eyes, they could punish the culprits.

“Officer, what about that girl? Aren’t you going to detain her too?” Mrs. Su yelled from the cell.

“Shut up, woman! Why don’t you worry about your own fate first?”

Mrs. Su instantly shut her mouth. Her husband had once told her that the landlord was a strict person and even increased the rent. So she never thought the landlord would care about such things as others’ bullying the tenants.

Mrs. Su had thought that she would get away with destroying that woman’s store. Now, she began to suspect her husband.

They watched with sunken hearts as the man held the girl’s hand and walked out with her.

Seeing that his job was done here, Assistant Jiang was also about to leave, but one of the constables stopped him.

“You can’t leave yet, Mr. Jiang. You have to spend at least a night.”

Outside the station, Annie stopped walking when they approached the car.

“Why did you stop?” Andrew looked at her. He didn’t hide his anger.

Annie wriggled her hand free and began walking away. “How sure am I that Mr. Lim will take me back home?”

More than anything, she wanted to see the situation her mother was in. While the police took her away, Mrs. Lin had run after the cars until they overtook her.

Annie was quite surprised that he didn’t let the policemen throw her inside the cell just like others.

All in all, she did nothing but watch the drama unfold while they waited for Assistant Jiang’s arrival.

“Stop right there.” The man’s voice reached her ears before she could take a step further. “Unless you want to go back there and rot in the cell like others, you must follow me home, Mrs. Lim.”

“How about I go back and report to the police that Mr. Lim is being an abusive husband?” Annie gave him a stiff smile.

Without waiting for his reply, she hailed a taxi and left in it. But first, she had to stop at the nearby pharmacy to treat her wound.
