Chapter 55: Chapter 55

Because of the chaos of last night, Annie had to postpone her moving into the new apartment building until the next morning.

At H District Apartment Building…

The girl walked out of the elevator, holding one large bag while Dylan dragged her luggage behind her.

Dylan who was usually bubbly and would talk nonstop now looked like a drenched rat. His mother was very mad at him, the woman couldn’t stand his sight. And he could sense some anger for his sister too. Yet, like always, Annie didn’t show it on her face whether she was mad at him or not.

With a blank look, she simply muttered, “Dylan, I hope whatever you’re doing out there will not bring trouble to Ma. She has been through a lot recently, don’t try to anger her more.”

What Annie had been afraid of last night had come to pass. Due to the anxiety, Mrs. Lin’s blood pressure spiked up. Mrs. Lin also refused to go to the hospital, claiming she was alright. Annie had a hard time convincing her to at least go to the nearby pharmacy to get some drugs.

Annie retrieved the keys from her bag and used them to unlock her new apartment. In the silent hallway of the apartment building, not a speck of dust could be seen even from the sparkling white tiled floor.

The doors were heavy, blocking out the noises from the neighbors. There was a vast space between each door and one had to walk a few seconds before getting to the other neighbor’s room.

With only three to five rooms on one floor, the apartment building looked more like a hotel and each resident minded their own business.

Annie and Dylan spent half of the day unpacking and tidying up her new apartment. As hours went by, Dylan began loosening up.

He would crack jokes now and then, yet, the apartment was only filled with his laughter. Annie seemed to be busy in her own world. Sometimes, the guy would think she was spacing out.

“By the way, Sis,” Dylan spoke after cracking a not-so-funny joke. “I heard from Little Chen that our savior last night is the new landlord. Everyone described him as otherworldly, is it true? They all said he arrested the evil Mr. Su and his wife. Heh! Before, they had bad judgments towards the landlord. But now, they think he is like an angel. Some have begun thinking that maybe Mr. Su is the one at fault all this time. The landlord might have nothing to do with the rent increment.”

As Dylan went on speaking, Annie paused what she was doing. The girl spaced out for some seconds, her eyes fixed on the opposite wall, looking deep in thought. Then she simply scoffed and continued what she was doing.

On the side of her lips was a small smile which Dylan found creepy. “Big Sis, you were there last night. He even took you to the police station but later on released you. You can also tell he’s a good man, right?”

“Help me take this outside.” Annie had gathered some trash in a small basket and she handed it to the guy. “Make sure you dump it at the trash area outside the apartment building.”

That was a long journey. Dylan’s expression twisted and he took the trash with a hesitant look. He transferred the trash into a black nylon bag and went out with it. Knowing his sister who would normally do this kind of task by herself, he had a feeling that she was purposely chasing him out.

Did he say something wrong and he wasn’t aware?

Annie sat on the couch, her smile fading away. The girl let out a sigh, the look in her eyes changing. Despite appearing calm, her demeanor had changed and an almost helpless look flashed in her eyes.

“I never knew you to be this stubborn, Mr. Lim. I told you you’re going to regret this marriage. Are you trying to make me eat my words?”

When work started the next morning, Annie was a bit late. She arrived at the company a few minutes past eight. Walking into the Arts Department, she found the place bustling more than usual which was strange.

The employees did not even notice her as they were gathered around in one place, each of them fighting to take a look at a tablet.

The tablet was in the hands of one of the younger employees who seemed to be running from them.

“Come on, give it to us. This is important news, we have to see for ourselves.”

“Why are you so stingy, Samantha? You broke this news to us and you don’t want us to see with our own eyes.”

The girl named Samantha held her tablet protectively and glared at them. “Why don’t you check it through your own devices then?” She was afraid they were going to destroy her tablet and she would have no one to compensate her.

But the employees kept pestering her, even Layla was among them. Seeing that she was about to be overpowered, Samantha sighed in relief when she saw Annie and she hurried towards her.

“Ms. Lin, please help. I just told them the news and they want to eat me up. See, it’s not my fault they’re disoriented. Please don’t punish me.” After speaking, Samantha pushed the tablet into Annie’s hands.

When the other employees saw that, they instantly backed off. No one could open their mouths and ask Annie to give them the tablet. They could only stare at Samantha in annoyance.

Annie had on a confused smile at why the employees looked so frantic. With the tablet in her hands, she decided to take a look at what was going on.

It was just some news about five celebrities who got into an accident on their way to a bar. Three of them were D-list actresses, and the other two were newly enrolled models. The girl who was driving among them was so severely injured that she was rushed to the ICU. But no one could tell their fate.

Layla had come to Annie’s side, giving her the chance to read the news. Even pictures were attached and she cringed at the horrible sight.

“What is this world turning into for goodness sake? I have a feeling this isn’t a normal accident! I think it’s a setup!”
