Chapter 153: Chapter 153
Inside The CEO’s Office…
The man sat behind his desk and Annie waited for him to say his instructions.
“Mr. Lim-“
“Take this.” He brought a card out of one of the desk’s drawers and pushed it forward.
Curious, Annie stepped forward and picked up the card from the desk. She surveyed it, her face forming a small frown then she looked up. “What is this for?”
“You will need it to have access to the security office. You know what to do, Annie.” The man gave her a blank look, resting back on his chair.
Annie looked at the card again. It was specially made for the CEO. In the whole company, no one had the right to command the security apart from him.
Giving someone this card meant full access to the security department. Just like in the historical times when one could use an emblem to command a whole army.
Annie tilted her head to the side, laughing to herself. “I can remember someone telling me I’m in this game alone. Mr. Lim, I didn’t expect you would offer me assistance.”
“Don’t think too far.” The man flipped open a document in front of him and focused his attention on it. “I only gave it to you so you can do the job fast. Mrs. Lim, I give you a week to expose the criminals.”
The smile on the girl’s face faded a bit and she shook her head. “Then I must thank Mr. Lim for his assistance. I wonder what reward I will get for ridding the company of criminals.”
“Don’t speak about rewards. It’s for your advantage too.”
Annie dropped the card inside her pocket and turned to walk out. The man frowned a bit and he looked up from the document.
“Did I give you permission to leave?”
“What else do you want, Mr. Lim?” Annie turned around and gave him a helpless look.
He looked at her and she stared back at him with folded hands. A few seconds passed by and the man didn’t say anything.
Then after a while, he simply returned to what he was doing. “Get me Assistant Jiang.”
“Alright,” Annie replied and then left.
On coming out of the CEO’s office, she headed into the washroom first and brought out her phone.
Scrolling through the contact list, her fingers stopped at a number and she dialed it. The call was answered after a few rings and a timid voice came from the other end.
“Ms. Lin…” The girl’s voice was hoarse. “I want to apologize again for dragging you into this… If Ms. Lin doesn’t want to take up the task, I will- I will come to the CEO and explain… Ms. Lin, I don’t want to see others suffer because of us.”
Mr. Yang’s assistant had been reading the comments on the company’s forum. Apart from the employees bashing her, they were also saying unpleasant things about Ms. Lin. Despite being in great anxiety, she felt guilty for dragging the girl into her case.
What she and Mr. Yang did for Annie was something every competent person with a sane mind would do.
She shouldn’t have used that to convince Annie to believe her in the heat of the moment. If she hadn’t been too anxious, she would have saved another person from becoming a victim of Mr. Wang and Mr. Wu’s cunningness.
“Ms. Yu, that’s not a problem. I’m also willing to help. May I know where you are?”
“You’re an angel, Ms. Lin. But Mr. Wang and Mr. Wu are not people to trifle with. Mr. Yang told me that they are the people behind our scandal. Ms. Lin, you must be careful.” She sighed.
“To answer your question, where else could I be, Ms. Lin,” she went on. “I can’t even come to the company anymore because of what the employees will say. Mr. Yang is recovering at the hospital and I’m not even allowed to visit him. My family got wind of what happened and I’m afraid of what they will say if I go home.”
Annie listened to her silently as the girl sobbed.
“Right now, I’m staying at a friend’s place. Ms. Lin, I’m sorry I can’t come to the company. We are supposed to do the investigation together, but I can’t handle those horrible remarks. Apart from that, I might get fired for missing work.”
“You have to come, Ms. Yu. Avoiding the problem won’t solve anything.” Annie could understand the girl’s reasoning, but it was useless at the moment.
If she didn’t come out and prove her innocence, would the problem go away?
“If you remain in hiding, Ms. Yu, won’t the people believe more that you’re guilty? The more you run away, the more you give them the power to bully you…”
Annie trailed off without completing her words. For a second, she was surprised at her own words. Didn’t those words sound familiar?
“Ms. Yu.” She cleared her throat and continued. “This matter does not only concern you. If Mr. Wang and Mr. Wu are punishing you and Mr. Yang for secretly helping me out, it’s normal that I help you in return. So don’t feel guilty. Also, don’t mind what the employees will say.”
“Ms. Lin, I’m afraid to come out.”
“You have to-“ Annie stopped speaking, hearing the girl’s rapid sobs. She let out a sigh and stared at the phone’s screen.
A few seconds later, she placed the phone back on her ear. “Ms. Yu, just send me your address.”
Knowing that speaking on the phone would not yield anything, Annie thought it better to see the girl face to face.
After getting the girl’s weak response, she hung up and left the washroom.
Assistant Jiang jumped in fright as they almost bumped into each other. He was on his way to the CEO’s office and his head was occupied with thoughts of that crazy girl, so he didn’t see her coming.
“Ah! Ms. Lin, you almost scared me.” He patted his chest, sighing in relief.
Annie shook her head at the assistant, finding his reaction funny. “Mr. Lim wants you in his office. Assistant Jiang, you seem to be enjoying yourself in this area.”
“Don’t give me that look, Ms. Lin. Sure, I enjoy MystiArt Productions, but…” He looked around before stepping forward and whispering, “Mr. Lim is a ticking time bomb. Could you be more lenient towards your husband, Mrs. Lim? After all, when the wife is merciful, the husband is naturally always in a good mood.”
“I recently got invited to an online community, Assistant Jiang. Would you mind taking my place and joining? I can see you’re an expert than I.”
“Sure. As long as I can have fun, I’m in for it.”
“Of course, you will have fun,” she said lazily. “It is for the relationship experts and they’ll be glad to have you on their team.”
Realizing that the girl was simply making fun of him, Assistant Jiang pursed his lips.
Both husband and wife were sharp-tongued. Even their speech pattern was almost the same. Maybe this couple deserved each other.
