Chapter 32: Chapter 32
Chapter Thirty-One
Shane
It was Shane's fourth day of bunking his school, but he did not care. It was not as if this was the first time he was choosing to do something else on his school day. However, this was certainly different and more important then all of those things.
Shane walked out of his school and pulled out his phone. He was a little conflicted between who to call first. Sonya or Liam. Even though it was not clear what had happened between Liam and Sonya, one thing was certain that something had happened. Shane was sure of it. His gut feeling was telling him about it.
Standing out with his phone out, Shane tried to think of whom he should call first then he decided that first it would be Liam. Liam was easy to press for information while Shane was not so sure about Sonya. She was a little stubborn. And he was not sure if Sonya would tell him the truth or anything. On the other hand, once you provoke an emotion of anger in Liam, he would spit thing out in that instant. Thus, Shane thought of phoning Liam first.
It would also be way more easy to face him than Sonya. So, Shane dialed Liam.
On third ring, Liam picked up his phone. "Hello?" Liam asked.
"Let's meet up." Shane answered, cutting the chase.
There was a few moment of silence on the other side of the phone before Liam finally spoke. "Fine. Same place. Meet you there in fifteen minutes." Liam told Shane. Shane nodded his head even though Liam could not see it and replied back with a simple, "Okay. See you there." and then cut the call.
In that moment, Shane's doubt was confirmed. Something did happen between the two. And it was BAD. Not only he could sense in Liam's long pause and feel in his guts but he also felt it seeking in when he realised that since he fought with Michael, he had not been in contacted by Sonya.
No phone call. No text. Nothing. He had been so busy, working things in his mind that he completely lost track of reality and what was going in it. As Shane walked to the nearest bus stand, he tried to dial Sonya but could not bring himself to call her. Defeated, he let it be that way and told himself that he would call her as soon as he was done meeting Liam.
Under fifteen minutes, Shane reached their common place for hang out. In no time, he came face to face with Liam and by the looks of his face, Shane knew.
"What did you say to her?" Shane asked Liam, his voice hard and cold. He could not even recognise his own voice.
Liam looked away as soon as Shane hit him with this question.
"Answer me." Shane gritted out.
Liam turned back to look at Shane. "I told him the truth." He said to Shane.
"What?" Shane asked, not getting it. "What truth?" He questioned.
"I told him that he was coming in between our friendship and that it was her fault that you yelled at Michael." Liam told Shane.
Shane's heart skipped a beat. "What?" Shane breathed heavily.
Liam's expressions also hardened and he pinned Shane with his sharp gaze.
"Isn't it the truth? She thought that she was your girlfriend and hence she proceeded to ask Michael about your past. Which resulted in a fight between amongst all." Liam said.
"You told her about my and Michael's fight?" Shane asked, godsmacked.
"Of course, I did. I told her everything. I also told her that you never considered her as your girlfriend. We all believed that she was your girlfriend." Liam said. "Even Michael did. That's why he told about your past to her. Otherwise, he would never said a word to her. She had all of us fooled." Liam muttered to himself.
It was like somebody had dropped a bomb on Shane. He felt everything coming crashing down on him. He felt his mouth drop open but he could not bring himself to close it. This was all so absurd.
"Who do you think is it at fault here? It's her." Liam told Shane. Shane could not believe his own ear. He could believe what he was hearing.
"How is it her fault? It's mine. Since I ..." Shane stopped in middle of sentence. 'Since I never made it official and kept her in dark all this time.'
Shane finished the sentence in his head. It was him who backed off when his friends asked his relationship with her. It was his fault that he was not so sure if he was ready to be in an official relationship. It was his fault that he was so conflicted by the news, Sonya found about his past, that he did not even own up to his responsibility and denied ever being in a relationship with her.
He swallowed. It was all HIS fault.
"It was all my fault." Shane said in a low voice. Liam looked at Shane and Shane stared at Liam. Instead of trying to explain Liam, about how it was all his fault. Shane pulled out his phone and dialed Sonya without giving it a second thought.
"Do you know where is she? When did you last see her?" Shane asked Liam.
Liam let out a breath. He shook his head. "The last time I saw her was three days ago. The next day after your fight with Michael." Liam answered Shane. Shane closed his eyes.
He needed to meet Sonya. He needed to meet her now.
The call went to voicemail and Shane let out a frustrating breath. Without saying goodbye, he turned around and hurried to go back to Kara's house. While on bus to Kara's house, Shane dialed to Alex and asked if Sonya showed up at school but he denied. Shane asked to Alex to ask his friends and some of their classmates however the answer was still the same.
They haven't seen her.
Shane cut the call. He got off the bus and hurried towards to Kara and Sonya's house but as he reached the house, he found it locked. Shane called Kara. She picked up.
"Hello, Shane." Kara greeted Shane.
"Where is Sonya?" Shane asked Kara straight out.
After a second's pause, Kara spoke. "Sonya moved out two days ago. She left our place. I thought she told you." Kara answered Shane. Like a punch landed in his stomach, Shane felt all the air pass out of his lungs.
She moved out?
"Hello, Shane? Are you there?" Kara called out from the other side but Shane was too knocked out that he could not hear her. After few moments, he answered Kara.
"Where did she move? Is this the reason, she is not attending school?" Shane asked.
"She moved school as well. Wait, she did not tell you?" Kara questioned. Shane felt as if somebody was raining down punches on him.
"Where did she go?" Shane asked once again. He braced for another impact.
"I don't know. She did not tell me much. She did so abruptly that I almost forgot. She must have probable moved right back to her home with her parents." Kara told Shane.
Shane took a deep breath. "Send me the address."
After receiving the text, Shane headed towards the address, he was given. On his way to her home, Shane asked his friends in school to find out if Sonya actually moved out of that school. As he was about to reach her house, he received a call from her friends, confirming that she indeed moved out of school. Where her new school was? They had no idea.
Scared, Shane went to the address where her house was supposed to be. He went in to only find out that the previous owner of that house had left yesterday.
Shane felt his heart giving out of his chest. He felt as if his mind has frozen. Still, he did not lose hope. Instead, he remembered that Sonya's work as part-time and decided to go there.
It was near sunset when Shane reached Sonya's workplace. In his hunting, he completely lost track of time. With a heavy heart and knowing sensation, he went inside just to find out that Sonya had quit her workplace too.
Numb, Shane sat down on the stairs of the shop and began sobbing his arms. Hours went by but he did not move away. The crying and sobbing was gone but the sorrow was not.
Out of nowhere, he felt somebody's hand on his shoulder. He looked up to find an older lady looking at him. She gave him piece of paper and said that Sonya had left it for him.
A note.
In a hurry, he took it from her hand and with shaking hands, he opened it.
"Shane.
My family and I are moving out of country. I did not have the guts to meet you in person but I wanted to tell you that were the best thing that happened to me. I will miss you a lot. I hope you miss me too. If you do then look at the moon in sky, I will do the same. And I'm sorry for everything I caused.
Sonya."
And Shane realised he had missed his chance ...
