Chapter 28: Chapter 28

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Sonya

'Fights does not resolve anything.' Sonya had heard people say and believed. However, now she had some different thoughts on it. Not all fights are wrong. They are healthy in their own way. In a fight, all party finally let their real problems out. They confess the things that they had been holding onto and keeping inside them. The anger and frustration they had about one another finally lets out. The anger finds a way out, finally free from all the times that it had been kept inside.

And when all parties has bared themselves, spitting out everything they had against each other, they, at last, knows where everyone stands. What they had in their mind and finally can see what the other person wanted from them. Fighting can be healthy. Not just when they were the only thing that was happening in a relationship.

Sonya and Shane were living example of it.

Since that night in their house, all of their friends shunned James after knowing what he did. Later, he disappeared from the neighbour all together. As a result of the fight, Sonya and Shane had became extremly close. None of them named their relationship but both of them seemed to know where they stood. Since that day, Sonya and Shane recounciled and were finally able to move past all the problems they had with each other.

Sometimes they went out to watch movies, sometimes they went in park. Shane helped Sonya in the housework and Sonya began learning cooking little by little from Shane. He was a great teacher and never got frustrated with her. They spend their time together more than ever, talking, working and helping each other with whatever they could find.

However, there was one thing that made Sonya uncomfortable.

Shane never talked about his life outside school. He talked about his friends, school, football practice, his interests, hobbies but he never let the conversatin steer in the direction of his house. Never. Everytime Sonya tried to bring up Shane's family, he changed the topic and asked something about Sonya instead. Hell, she did not even know what he did for living when he knew that she worked as a part time in a cafe.

It was annoying. But most of all, it made Sonya curious about why he never wanted to talk about his family. There must have been a reason why he did not want to talk about his family. Nonetheless, Sonya found it unfair that he knew everything about her but she did not. He knew about her family but she did not. What was the reason?

Sonya tried not to pry into it but one day her patience snapped. She wanted to be equal in this relationship or whatever relationship they had. She wanted to know more about Shane. Thus one day, when Michael came to her house to eat some snacks, because "he was passing by and thought about visiting her" Sonya brought up this conversation.

"Umm ... Michael?" Sonya began, staring at Michael, who was eating doritos as if his life depended on it. Nobody was home except her. Kara was gone to market and all of Michaels friend were busy with their own thing.

"Yeah?" Michael asked without looking up. His mouth closed, busy chewing all chips.

"What does Shane do for a living? Does he work part-time or something? No, does he work at all?" Sonya questioned. Her tone nonchalant, trying not to sound like this was a big deal. Even though for her it was.

"He works in a garage. He didn't tell you?" Michael asked, looking at Sonya and raising his eyebrows. Sonya thought about denying it but then she could not make herself lie to him. So, she merely shook her head.

"Whoa. He really did not tell you?" Sonya shook her head once again.

"What else he did not tell you?" Michael asked, suddenly seeming interested in whatever answer Sonya was going to give.

"Nothing. He does not like to talk about himself. He did not even tell me about his family. Can you tell me about it?" Sonya asked.

Michael looked at the cealing, like in thoughts. Then he stopped eating and settled more into his seat.

"He did not tell you about his family?" Michael said, not really asking it. He nodded his head. "Makes sense. It isn't pretty. However, I thought he would tell you though." He said, seemingly talking to himself.

"I don't know if he would like me to tell you or not. But now that both of you are bascially ..." Michael let the sentence hang in air, making Sonya blush.

Finally, like he came to a conclusion, he spoke. "Shane's parents were in an abusive relationship. They did not pay any attention to him and sometimes get angry on him. And you know ..." Michael did not complete the sentence and let Sonya figure it out all by herself. Which she did in mere second. Shane's parents were abusive towards to him too.

"Anyway, they kicked him out once or twice out of their house in anger. However, the last time they did. Shane did not return. Instead, he came in to work in my father's garage. That's when I got to know him." Michael told Sonya. Sonya felt as if her heart was weighed down by a brick or something heavy.

"Now, he lived in a rented room before moving here and currently works in my father's garage as a part time to make his living." Michael told Sonya, shoving rest of the chips in his mouth. Sonya sagged down in her seat. Hearing this, she felt really bad for Shane.

Now she understood, why he was good at cooking and doing all the house and why he did not like to bring up his family. He was embarrassed. He felt ashamed of them. Although, he had nothing to be ashamed off. If anything, to her he seemed more strong now than it did to her before. Knowing what he went through and yet never letting his past haunt him.

Hell, he even managed to make a living at such a young age. He managed to survive the worst of the worst situation and was able to conquer those sort of circumstances. He was definitely a very strong character.

Sonya finally felt that she, now, knew something about him that he did not tell her. It made her see him in a different light.

Later that night, when Shane and Sonya were hanging out on the porch, Sonya brought it up.

"Since when are you working in that garage?" She asked Shane. Shane raised his brows in confusion, so Sonya explained.

"The garage. Where you work." Sonya said. For a second, Shane's face remained confused until the confusion drained his face and something cold settled on his face.

"How do you know?" Shane asked Sonya.

"I asked Michael about you and he told me everything. That's how I know." Sonya replied.

"What do you mean everything?" Shane asked Sonya, sitting up upright suddenly. Backbone straight and eyes sharp.

This reaction from Shane confused Sonya. "Your life and past. About your work and family. Those sort of thing. I know what happened to you." Sonya said. "I'm so sorry for what happened to you and everything you went through." Sonya told Shane with all her sincerety.

Suddenly, Shane stood up from his chair. "I'm tired. I'm going to sleep." He said,in his cold voice and then walked out of there. Leaving Sonya behind, all confused and hurt.
