Chapter 43: Chapter 43

I move close up to Nicklaus, and begin. "You knew Carl was around and will see us, didn't you?"

No reply.

"Did you not?" My voice is harsh on him, but he didn't budge as I have expected. At least he gives me an answer.

"Yes, I did."

"Why didn't you tell me? So we can fight?"

"Yes." He looks away from my eyes, and I shake my head.

"Your issue is on latter." I say to him, but instead of the look I wanted, he gives me a smirk. Oh, yeah. The way I put my words. His issue will be solved latter. That gives me the satisfaction that I'll still be seeing him.

"Carl, I'm so sorry. About everything."

"I can't. Just don't come near me ever again." He says as coolly and collected as he can.

I frown. It hasn't gotten to this stage. "You lied too."

"And I guess that makes the two of us the bad guy then. After all, aren't I a killer?" He chuckles. "I'll be becoming a typical Wildlings soon, meaning I'd never see you again. You just made things easy for me. Goodbye, Rayne." And with that, not letting me to talk, he's left, running.

What the hell just happened? Have I lost Carl that way?

I turn to Nicklaus, and seeing he still wears that smirk face, I huff and walk away. Surprisingly, he's beside me in a second, catching up with my fast strides easily.

"Where are you going?"

"Just leave me alone, will you?" I feel tears on my eyes, pleading to drop. "Haven't you done enough already? Made me lose my friend. Just stop this fake sympathetic look, or concern, whatever it is you can call it; after all I know Vampires feels no emotion, so leave me be. I need to think!" I shout at him and he stops.

I never look behind me to see the pain in his eyes. I only make my way to the house, grab my keys and leave for a long drive. I can't go to Shade's because Nicklaus might later come looking for me and come there. Neither will I stay home, or at Mia's; we don't even talk that much. It's better I just drive alone, feel the breeze brush my worries away. Tommorow morning, I'll call Carl to explain myself. And him, explain himself.

I turn on the heater inside the car, feeling myself getting colder, and seeing my own breath hover like fog inside the air in front of my face. I'm driving in a lonely street, quiet and able to help me think. Due to the moonless night, the trees at either sides take a resemblance of black bricks.

Where to start thinking is that major hard work. I don't know if I should start with Nicklaus real identity which he just told me, or with Carl's identity that I'm just learning. It's painful in one part that they both lied to me this much. I never expected that the truth will be so massive, but then, what was I too expecting... nothing involving craziness?

What do I expect someone who can mysteriously read my mind tell me? What do I expect someone who can change the colours of his eyes numerous times tell me?

One thing that still baffles me is that; if Nicklaus is a Vampire hybrid, that makes Carl what...An animal controller hybrid since that's what I've seen him control?

An

I check the side mirror again even knowing there's no car coming behind me, when a reddish light reveals inside the mirror. It takes me few seconds to realize that it's not a light, but a fire. A hefty one, and it's coming my way.
