Chapter 39: Chapter 39

It was the last week of Spring Break and the girls had been asking me to join them at Club Border. I wasn’t thinking of going anywhere. I had locked myself up every day since the last time I spoke to Diego. I was missing him. My friends didn’t know I wasn’t seeing him anymore. I had yet to tell Melba. I couldn’t find it in my heart to explain what had happened between us, so I didn’t say anything to them about it. I was closing up my laptop and packing up to leave for the day when four of my beautiful friends came into my room. “Fio, it's Wednesday and tonight is ladies' night,” Patty said enthusiastically. “Yeah, Fio, and we need for you to come with us,” Zulema added. “Why do I have to go exactly?” I asked them. “Well because you are the life of the party don’t you know,” Sara said sarcastically. I knew Sara and I was not on speaking terms and for her to be among my friends was just being plain mean. “Why can’t get a man without my help?” I threw it back to her. Sara was about to tell me something when Melba pushed past her. “No, Fio we just want you to be with us. I mean you’ve held yourself up with Diego too long. I think it’s time we went out. Don’t you.” I closed my eyes this was the time I came out clean. I took a deep breath and let it out. “I am no longer seeing Diego” and before they started to ask questions. “It’s for the better that I broke off with him,” I said. All the girls looked at me. “And I am not going to get involved with anyone else for a while. I think men are a lot of work. I guess I’ll go back to just looking for a one-night stand.” I said. The girls began to laugh. It was Patty who spoke. “Then that’s it we need to celebrate being available again.” She said. I began to laugh. I knew I needed my friends so I decided to join them tonight. Fred had already warned me about the Zetas trying to attack again but I didn’t know whether to believe men or not so I decided to take a chance and go off and party.

The night seemed strange to me. I felt a warm breeze past me when I walked out the door and blew my hair into my face. I looked at the trees that surrounded the complex area but saw them barely moving. I didn’t know what to think about it. I walked down the steps. I was aware that Diego nor Fred’s vehicle was not in the area and I was thankful for it. I didn’t feel like seeing them and reminding me of the past weeks. I had already closed the door to those two. I was at the last step of my stairs and I jumped off it. I was wearing my boots and tight blue jeans with a pretty western shirt with a blue cami underneath. I didn’t take my hat this time. I let my hair down but carried a ponytail holder with me in case it got too hot. I was ready to party and to forget everything that had happened during the last past weeks. My Laramie truck roared to life as I turned on the ignition. I loved hearing it making me once again powerful. I was enjoying the way I felt carefree I knew nothing could stop me from feeling the way I did. I heard a honk in the back of my truck and turned to look. It was my friends, Patty, Zulema, Melba and yes Sara. I lowered the window to my truck and stuck my head out. “So who's coming with me.” Melba and Zulema got off the car and headed to my truck. I knew they wouldn’t let me down. It was already eight in the evening, my friends and I decided not to head to the Border so quickly. We went bar hopping instead. We headed to Rumors and Cowboys. We drank enough to make us tipsy but not enough to make me feel drunk. My phone buzzed and I answered it. “Hey where the hell are you now”, Patty said through the receiver. We are here at Cowboys, why?” “Listen we're heading already to The Border, we hear it’s already getting pack we might not be able to go inside.” She said at the end of the receiver. “I’ll let Zulema and Melba know and we’ll head out there.” “Okay, Fio see you guys there.” “See ya!” I hanged up and headed back to my two friends. We finished up our drinks and headed to the next club. We were glad that our friend was able to help us out when it came to parking. I had called him earlier telling him that we might make it out to the club tonight and asked if he wanted to join us. He declined as usual but seemed kind of concern for us to go, but being him he never told us not to. I remember looking at Ricardo and he had concern in his eyes. The warm breeze once again passed us through and we continued on our way.

The girls were right on.

The Border was packed there was a long line to get in. I was hoping that my friend Carlos was the security at the door. As I walked to check if he was there I could see Patty and Sara in the line. “Hey how long you’ve been waiting now for?” Zulema asked the girls. “Thirty minutes can you believe it!” “What seems to be so great about getting in? It wasn’t this packed before.” Patty asked. We waited with the girls even though some of the people didn’t enjoy that we had cut through the line, but we didn’t care. We already had alcohol inside our bodies and as far as I can tell my confidence was strong. “I’ll see who is at the front door,” I said and I strolled around the line. Luck was with me it was Carlos. “Hey, Carlos what’s with the long line?” I asked him. “Hey Fio, how are you girl, you looking fine.” “Thanks” I knew I didn’t need to hear that but well Carlos was a friend. “So, can we go in there?” “Sorry, Fio you need to wait like everybody else.” “What? Not even for a friend.” “Can’t bosses orders. I don’t want to lose my job.” “Yeah you’re right, but tell me what got this club going.” “Haven’t been coming by much, we got Karaoke and everyone here is waiting to see that girl which was posted on YouTube about two weeks ago.” “What girl?” I asked. Deep inside I knew, he was talking about me. “Fio, don’t tell me you haven’t seen the video. This girl was great she sang and everybody in town believes she is a regular here and they are waiting to hear her sing. “Are you kidding me?” I was dumbfounded. “No, why do you know her.” I thought about not saying anything but if it allowed us to go in faster. I decided to take the risk. “What if I did? Would it make me and my friends go in?” Carlos looked at me “not unless you can make her show up like magic. It’ll probably put me in good with my boss.” He said laughingly. I thought about it and I rounded up the girls to come to the front. “Okay, Carlos I’ll let you in on a secret, but that doesn’t mean she will be performing tonight, Okay.” “Well then what’s the point in letting her in?” “Well, you see Carlos she needs to be kind of drunk to get her started.” “Fio, that video didn’t show her drunk.” “I know but the people in that video were less than you have here.” Motioning to him, Carlos thought a bit about it. “Okay, I’ll let you in but you have to tell me who it is first.” I debated on telling him that it was one of my friends, but I couldn’t do that to anyone of them. I got closer to him and whispered near his ear. “The girl singing on YouTube is me.” I pointed to myself and he looked at me strangely. “No way! Fio you are just telling me it's you to get you in.” “When have I ever lied to you Carlos I am telling you the truth.” He looked at me. “Ladies, please tell him who the girl in the video is.” Sara quickly loaded it onto her phone. “You mean this video.” She showed it to Carlos. “Yeah, that one.” “Well, you’re looking at her.” “No way!” “Yes! Hey! maybe we should go to another club this one isn’t letting us in any way.” Patty said behind us. Carlos opened up the ropes to allow us in. Carlos kept looking at me and I returned my gaze and I shrugged my shoulders. People began to yell in protest but he closed up the rope behind us. I knew he kept staring he just couldn’t believe it either. At least I knew I couldn’t believe I had done something like it as well.
