Chapter 248: Chapter 248

[SAMANTHA’s Point of View]

I couldn’t explain it, but it felt strange to see Killian again after he left and was gone from this place for so many days. The second I saw him standing awkwardly in front of that door, I thought my heart skipped a beat, and I knew Dominic had felt that too; that’s why he got pissed, and his eyes darkened as Killian told us everything about the looming danger outside the western gates.

Dominic had no hatred against Killian. He didn’t despise the MoonStone Alpha, especially after Killian chose to save him instead of himself for the sake of me and the twins.

He felt threatened by Killian’s presence, especially when my friend was around me. And I couldn’t blame him, especially if I was having these strange feelings I had been having since we went to the Moon Wolf Spring.

I couldn’t understand how things had escalated to this point, but it was something I had no control over. Do I love Dominic? Of course! With all my heart. But these feelings I had for Killian—I couldn’t explain them well... or perhaps it felt like everything would be okay when he was around? Like I could rely on him completely?

It was awful that I trusted Killian more than my husband. I shouldn’t feel it this way, but Killian had been with us even from the start. How many times have I already asked him to leave me? That he was not the person I needed from the start? I hurt him terribly. For so many times. But he never gave up on me and made sure the twins were safe no matter what. And I had no idea why Killian was doing this. Why?

After Killian left Dominic’s office, visibly angry at Dominic’s response, a ball of crumpled paper fell to the floor. I picked it up after Dominic turned away from the door, still frustrated about the issue with the Black Claws and the Shadow Werewolves. They remained unresolved even after we did everything to drive them away from the Northern wall, a part of which was still shattered from the last battle we had with them.

“What is it?” Dominic approached me with a worried face. He looked apologetic, though, for the way he behaved while he and Killian discussed things about what was happening at the western gates.

To make him feel a little better, I smiled and slipped the paper in the back pocket of my jeans. I didn’t want to lie, but the words on the paper didn’t make sense to me. Maybe I’ll tell him once I figure this one out?

“Nothing. Just some random grocery list.” I said, and then I shrugged my shoulders. “What are your plans now, though? Are you sure you still want to have the wedding? I don’t think this is the right time when we still can’t resolve our problems with the enemies outside the gates—”

“This isn’t a negotiation, my love.” Dominic closed the gap between us. He was so close that I could feel his warm breath against my lips. I swallowed hard. He smelled so f*cking good, and I couldn’t take my eyes away from his sexy hazel ones.

These were the feelings that made me confused. If this was because of the mate bond, or if I was truly in love with Dominic from the very start.

He smiled and gave me a soft kiss on the lips before whispering, “Okay, I need to leave now and discuss this problem with Liam and the council. Kiss Devon and Diana for me when you see them, okay?”

“Yes, of course,” I answered with a shy smile, and then watched him walk through the hallways as the Gamma guards gave their Alpha a low nod, acknowledging his presence in front of them.

I went back to his office and read the words that were in that note again.

“It should be from Killian,” I whispered to myself as I frowned, trying to figure out what those words meant. “Moonlight mirror in exchange for my life? What is that thing anyway? And why does Killian need it so bad that he would be willing to kill me?”

The only reason I could think of was that the object might be something capable of saving him from the curse that continued to cause him suffering, even while he was taking the potion.

Could it be that Killian came back to kill me so he could get this Moonlight Mirror?

When I studied the texture of the paper, I saw the remains of the seal that was broken, and I wasn’t surprised anymore if this letter was from the Black Claw.

I couldn’t believe that Killian could ever negotiate with these evil people.

My eyes widened, and my heart instantly raced in my chest.

Not too far from my husband’s office, I was certain I heard my son call for me. His voice sounded as if he was in distress, and I didn’t waste a single second and ran across the corridors, straight to where Devon’s scream came from.

It was the room where Madisson put the wedding dress.

What were they doing there?!

I was petrified when I saw a man in all black. Our eyes locked for a moment until I realized it was Devon, and Diana was clinging to each leg of the man while Purpe was biting his wrist. On the floor was a dagger, which widened my eyes in terror.

My body automatically moved, and I threw myself on the man in black as soon as Devon and Diana let go of him. With all my strength, I pinned him to the floor with my foot on his neck and my knee on his chest while my hand was curled into a fist, ready to break his nose if he ever made a wrong move.

I noticed the insignia on his jacket and figured he was one of the Black Claws! A f*cking spy!

“What do you want?” I hissed at him, my eyes glowing liquid gold. “Tell me why you are here, and maybe I will let you get out of here alive.”

He didn’t say a word, though. But he snarled at me, showing me his set of teeth as he glared at me, still struggling to get out of my grip but failing. I got a bit impatient and pressed my foot on his throat, and he started to look terrified as he choked.

“Tell me why you are here! Tell me!” I yelled at him as my rage started to explode in my chest. My voice boomed inside the room, making Devon embrace Diana as his sister trembled. Purple didn’t stop barking at the intruder, with her fur standing on its tips.

“Diana and I were looking for you in the hallways when we noticed the door of this room opened,” Devon tried to explain as he held his sister tight against him. Diana kept on swallowing as she suppressed her tears from falling down her face, trying not to look terrified in the face of the enemy.

“He is trying to steal the dress, Mom!” Diana exclaimed, her lips trembled as she tried to control her voice not to break.

I was looking at my kids, feeling awful that they had witnessed such a thing, until I realized the person underneath me was already wriggling, and I frowned. When I looked down, his mouth was already foaming, and I thought that he must have kept a poison pill between his teeth, which spies usually did so they wouldn’t spill everything they knew about their pack or organization, especially when they were being tortured.

Only something like Black Claw could do such an evil thing to their people.

I tried to revive the man, but it was too late. The poison had already spread all over his body even before the healers got into the room with the antidote.

“What happened here?” Dominic came with panic on his face as he saw me get away from the dead Black Claw that was lying on the floor with his mouth still foaming and his eyes looking blankly in his direction, glassy and lifeless. “Are you hurt?!”

Killian stopped behind Dominic, and his face went pale as he saw the Black Claw on the floor. Something in me was telling me that he must have known this could happen. Or maybe Killian sent this one to kill me so he didn’t have to do it?

I hated that I kept on thinking so many awful things about Killian after everything he did for me and the Silver Crescent. But what was the meaning of everything that I read on that small piece of crumpled paper that he left on the floor? Did he leave it there so I could see it? But why? It sounded stupid and strange.

For a second, Killian’s and I’s eyes locked with each other, and I didn’t know how to feel when he averted his eyes from me as if he couldn’t look me straight in the eyes. Could it mean that he really planned to kill me in exchange for that Moonlight Mirror?

But I remembered what Diana yelled, and I asked my little girl again as I approached her and made sure she was okay and unhurt. “What did you say again, Diana? What was that man doing when you both saw him here?”

“He had the dress in his arms,” Devon answered instead as he saw that his sister still hadn’t recovered yet from the shock of what happened. “We both saw he was about to jump out the window with the dress still in his arms.”

I frowned. The dress? What made the Black Claw get interested in my wedding dress?

It made no sense to me. But then I looked again at the dead body on the floor and noticed something about the jacket he was wearing.

He was also wearing clothing that had the same black thread as my wedding dress. My heart sank, realizing that the seamstress who must have worked on that dress was also a member of the Black Claw organization.

How did Madisson know this person?

My gut was telling me that maybe... just maybe, Madisson got corrupted as well with these people. But I shrugged away that thought. That was so impossible. No. Madisson couldn’t betray us and the pack. She was loyal to her mate—to Liam more than anyone. She couldn’t hurt him like that.

What the f*ck was happening to all of us?!
