Kayla
Kayla's mom, Mitchel was still up when she got home even though it had gotten very late. She was already one hour past her and she still could not fathom how the time moved so fast. It always seemed as if time was standing still whenever she was with Lucas.
Mitchel let her into the house and Kayla walked in.
"You're late" Mitchel said to her
"I'm sorry" Kayla said. She knew her mom was not going to ground her for being late. They've been more than liberal with her since they came to Hill City.
Just then, she saw her dad come down the stairs.
'Hey dad" Kayla said
"You can't be staying out this late, honey. It's not safe" her father said
"Lucas literally just dropped me off at the front of the house" Kayla said
"Well, I'll have to meet this Lucas if you're ever going to go out with him again" Mac said with a tone of finality
Kayla sighed and walked up the stairs and to her room. Of course she should have expected that her parents were not going to be happy with her for staying out so late. She knew that they would be even more pissed if they knew all what she has been up to.
She got a text then. Kayla rampaged through her purse to bring out her phone.
But then she brought out another phone. It was a burner phone. She held the phone in her hand, staring at it as if she had just seen a ghost. The phone was not like hers. It was a burner phone; one of those old flip phones.
When did this phone get into her purse, she wondered. Has her phone been stolen? She turned the contents of her bag on her bed and her phone was right there. She took it out from the bunch of lipstick, tampons and chapstick on her bed.
She decided to text Lucas to ask him about it. Maybe he did drop it in her bag after all she had been with him all night.
But just as she was about to dial Lucas's number, the burner phone rang.
Kayla knew that she shouldn't pick it up. She has seen the movies and usually it never ends well to pick up a call from a strange phone you found in your bag. But her curiosity got the best of her and she picked up the phone.
"Hello" she said tentatively
There was a short silence on the other side of the line but a voice came on.
"Do you know what happens when a goat decides to dance with a wolf?" The voice asked her, slow and cold. She felt a cold like a steel knife run down her spine
"Excuse me?" She asked
"He becomes prey for the wolf. The goat gets eaten " the voice said and then chuckled quietly.
"You know what…I'm going to end the call now. Maybe you've got the wrong number" Kayla said.
"Go ahead Kayla" the voice said and Kayla jumped on hearing her name 'you're going to make a fine partner for dancing" the voice said and ended the call
Kayla placed a hand over her heart as she felt her heartbeat increase. She was shaking all over. She picked up her phone and dialled Lucas's number. He didn't pick up. She called again and he picked up on the second ring
"Hey Kay" his voice rang out from the other side of the line and she felt a bit of relief all of a sudden. It was like hearing his voice assured her that she was safe and that she was not dancing with some wolf.
She tried to quiet her breathing which was still coming heavy.
"Are you okay?" Lucas asked her, obviously worried
"I fo…found a phone in my bag. A burner phone. Someone called me on the phone and…and..an"
"Listen to me Kay, just calm down okay, just breathe. You're going to be fine" Lucas assured her.
Kayla breathed slowly and soon she felt better. She didn't know why the voice had made her so on edge. Perhaps it really was a wrong number but she knew that it was not. This person had made contact with her. He knew her name. He had placed a burner phone inside her bag. Which means that he knew her and had seen her and had made contact with her. He probably had been watching her all evening. He could have harmed her if Lucas had not driven her home.
"Are you feeling okay now?" Lucas asked her after a while
"Yes, I'm fine" Kayla said and signed loudly
"So now tell me what happened" Lucas said "you said you found a burner phone in your purse?"
"Yes, and someone called me through the phone. He told me that a goat that dances with the wolf will become prey for the wolf" Kayla told him
There was a short pause at the other side of the line and then Kayla heard Lucas say "That asshole"
"What?' she asked him
"Don't worry, everything will be fine, I promise" he said
"You know who did this?" Kayla asked, the surprise in her voice palpable. Did Lucas know who had placed the phone on her bag? His reaction had told her that he did
After a pause, Lucas said "No, no I don't. Let me call you back" he said, his voice nervous.
"Was it your brother Derrick?" Kayla asked as it suddenly hit her. She had managed to put two and two together. Derrick had sat close to them at the party and she knew from Lucas reaction to him tonight that the both of them were not on good terms. But how deep did their anger run for him to do that to her.
"I don't know that it was him, Kayla. I'll have to ask him" Lucas said
"Ohmygod" Kayla whispered to herself
"It'll be fine. If it was him, it's probably just some mean joke. I'm sure he meant no harm" Lucas said
"Talk to you later" he added and with that he ended the call.
Kayla stood right at the centre of the room with her phone in her hand. She was still in shock. She remembered Charlotte telling her to stay away from Lucas. Was this what she meant? Perhaps it was because of Derrick. It was obvious to her that something was so not right with Derrick.
She wondered for a moment if she should tell her parents but then decided against it. The last thing she wanted was for her mom to start worrying about her safety. Maybe Lucas was right and it was just a harmless joke. But it had made her realize that she was so not going to get along with Derrick and that she didn't like him. She didn't like him at all.
