Chapter 102: Chapter 102
(Dmitri’s Thoughts)
“I am dreaming again, I know I am,” I say as I watch myself from this very incident I wish to forget, “This is my worst nightmare.”
Almost a decade ago, one particular incident changed not only my life, but the life of a young woman who untimely lost her parents because of my recklessness.
I clearly remembered what happened that night. The scene in my dream changes and it brought me back to the night of the accident.
I was out hanging with my friends, drinking, partying, clubbing, doing things which I thought would make me happy. Not until I received a call that night.
I went out of the bar only to hear my sister’s sobbing voice, “Dee, she’s gone! Mom’s really gone for good!”
“Hello, Heathe, wha the hell are you talking about?” I scold her with my drunken voice.
“Unsere eigene Mutter hat uns verlassen,” after repeating what she said for the third time, I finally understood.
“Maybe she went out for a while. Or probably with her friends, or just on a vacation. She would never do that!” I even defended my mom.
“No, Dee. Accept it, she left us for her own twisted freedom. She said it herself, didn’t she. To me, to you and to D–”
“–Stop it! That’s not true! I am coming home!” the call sobered me up. The crying voice of my lovely sister poured me the cold water that I needed.
“Im coming home, wait for me, and never told him that!” I clearly told my sister.
Without looking back, I went straight to my car, and immediately drove back home while listening to my sister’s sobs.
Then in the middle of our conversation she said, “I f-find a receipt of a plane t-ticket, Dee, you have to hurry. If you still want to see her, better check the airport. P-please bring her back!” my sister’s outcry made me sped up.
I didn’t think of the cars appearing on the left and ride. I heard honkings here and there, but all I ever wanted was to be at the airport.
I heavily stepped on the gas pedal until it reached 200 kph speed on the main road. I overtook many cars from my lanes, and kept on flashing lights on the slow cars in front of me.
I swiveled and changed lanes multiple times, I did all the road violation there is just to be at the airport before my mom’s flight departed.
The only thing I have in mind right now is to reach my mom in time. But that call for desperation suddenly became the death of someone’s favored life.
With just a few turns from the airport tunnel, I suddenly lost control of my car, and it began to circle round and round. Since the road was slippery, and because of the speed, I couldn’t hit the break on time. I hit a puddle, and a bump and my car was out of hand.
And for a moment, I thought I was going to die. So I closed my eyes and said, “Oh shit! What a terrible way to die!”
Then I heard the honkings, and the saw the flashes of lights from both lanes. And just like that, a red sedan approaching from my right received the huge impact of my uncontrollable vehicle.
As my tail light hit the driver’s side of their car, their car’s movement jived with mine. But because of the momentum applied by my car’s hard chassis, the red car suddenly flew to the other side of the road.
And with just a split second, I saw them getting hit and plowed by the big truck with my own very eyes.
“No!!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. I stepped on the break multiple times causing my car to wiggle even more, but after some attempts, it slowed my car.
Both lanes’ incoming cars came to a stop, so I was able to jump off my car while it was still moving. And as it hit one of the barrier, I immediately run to the red car, not minding the own injuries I just had in my bodies.
But my eyes revelead such horrendous sight. The red sedan got sandwiched in between the big truck and the tunnel’s solid barrier.
I vomited from the scene as I saw the bodies of a woman totally crushed, while the man’s hand was outside the window, dripping blood.
The woman was dead on the spot, while the man was still breathing.
I immediately asked for help, I knocked each car nearby so they would call 911.
“Please call 911, anyone?” I kept on screaming and screaming.
Then I heard a soft groan coming from the driver, “K-k-i…d..d.o,” the man said, so I ran to him.
I went closer to him and listened, “M-my d..da..ug..hte..r, b..rth…da…y,” though I barely understood the word, I gather it was something about his daughter’s birthday.
But as soon as he said it, he lost his life I wailed and kneeled, “No! No! No! It was me! It was my fault. I am sorry! I am sorry!”
I cried, and cried. The sound of the siren finally came and then everything went black for me.
***
It seemed that I woke up from a long nightmare. I could feel lots of apparatus connected to different part of my body. I could hear the rhythm from the breathing machine beside me, and my own heartbeat from the monitoring machine.
I tried to look somewhere else but I couldn’t easily move my head, so I moved my hands instead.
I noticed the irritation I felt with the huge amount of oxygen supply in my nose, so I removed it.
Then, seconds after, I saw my sister’s crying face, then she started screaming and yelling and yapping.
So I did everything I could to speak, “S-shut up, Hea-the!” I said with my panting voice.
“Oh my gosh, you are finally awake, Dee. We are so worried about you, my God, Dee!” then she hugged me causing me pain.
“That hurts, let go, Heathe,” she said.
“Wait, I will call the doctor, just stay put okay?” then she rushed out of the room while yelling.
Then, doctors, and nurses came back to my room still panting. They were faster than sonic the hedgehog.
Each of them started checking all my vitals here and there. And they kept on asking things about the incident.
But I… I told them this instead, “I can’t remember anything after my conversation with my sister. All I remember was I went driving back home, that was it.”
Then loud distinctive murmurs engulfed the whole hospital room, and I saw my sister with wide eyes open, still crying.
“D-did something happen?” I asked.
“N-nothing,” my sister smiled at me with those sad eyes.
“Heathe, I wanted to stay in Germany for a while, please tell, Dad,” I utter, and she nodded without a question.
