Chapter 122: Chapter 122
The shock of what had just happened was too much for Carol, who sat still in stunned silence for over ten minutes after Sebastian had left, to bear. There was a ringing sound in her ears, which refused to go even after she shook her head several times to clear them. She had stopped crying, in fact, her tears had been shocked dry due to what just took place. Of course, she had known that there would be more than one outcome when she told him she was pregnant, one of which would be that he would be outraged and tell her he wanted nothing to do with it, or that he would accept it, whether he was happy about it or not.
What she had not expected was that he would accuse her of something so horrible, accuse her of deception, and even worse, do what she had been afraid of all along, even when she was not yet pregnant ... decide that he no longer wanted anything to do with her. Sebastian, whom she loved so much that it hurt, had looked at her as though she were a despicable stranger whom he was setting his eyes on for the first time in his life. Suddenly, she wanted to be as far away from there as possible, which was just as well because Sebastian, with so much anger in his eyes, had ordered her to get out of his house before he got back from wherever he went.
Carol did not know where he had gone, but she was not going to wait to find out. He had threatened her, saying that she had better leave so that he would not do something he would regret. She hurried into the bathroom, dry heaved until she was fairly certain that she would vomit her intestines very soon, and then washed her face before moving woodenly into her soon-to-be former room. Knowing that she was not acting with a sound mind right then, Carol sat on her bed for a minute to think things through. Should she wait for Sebastian to come back and see if he would be reasonable? Yes, maybe that was what she should do.
The next second, however, she remembered the look on Sebastian's face before he left, and she shuddered outwardly. She had never seen Sebastian look so angry before. Besides, he had asked her to leave his house, and that was exactly what she should do before he came back and got even angrier when he saw that she was still there. She threw some things into her biggest suitcase, not even sure what it was that she was putting into the suitcase, but not caring either way. She just wanted to be as far away from here as possible before Sebastian came back to pour his unappealing wrath on her.
Once she had finished packing her things, however, uncertainty gripped her again. What if he had only said all those things because he was really angry at the moment?
"Just listen to yourself, Carol. You're trying to make excuses for that jackass. Would you ever have accused him of such things if the situations were reversed and you were in his position? Wouldn't you have at least listened to what he had to say in his defense? Did he give you that chance?" An inner voice asked her. She ignored it and picked up her phone to dial his number, only for her to find out that his phone was switched off. He had no doubt switched off his phone so that she would not be able to reach him. The more Carol thought about it, the angrier she became until she was practically boiling with anger.
To hell with him and his absurd sense of self-importance. So he was a billionaire? Big deal. Not everyone wanted to saddle themselves with such an egocentric asshole, so the earlier he got over himself, the better it was going to be for him. Carol thought angrily to herself. It was his loss, she decided. She was going to raise and love her child so much for the two of them, and if he ever came looking for her child, she would give him a piece of her mind, and he would not like it one bit.
Lugging the heavy suitcase down the stairs with tears of anger and frustration beginning to stream once more from her face, she observed the quiet house with a deep feeling of sadness. There was no doubt that she would miss the house, its beautiful gardens, and lush lawns. Most of all though, she would miss Sebastian ... the Sebastian that she had fallen in love with, the one who smiled at her and rubbed her back and was so very caring, not the accusing and unreasonable jerk that had asked her to leave the house while it was raining cats and dogs.
The rain was coming down in torrents, and bright lightning, punctuated with loud, occasional claps of thunder, flashed in the mostly dark sky, looking eerily beautiful and scary at the same time. The whole house was quiet, except for the noise of the downpour, so she guessed that everyone was still asleep, not that it mattered. Picking up the key to the car that Sebastian had allocated to her along with a driver when she first came here, she managed to move her luggage to the car and then put it in the backseat. By the time she was done, she was panting with exhaustion and cursing Sebastian a million times in her mind.
"Good morning, ma'am. Do you need me to drive you somewhere?" A voice asked, just as she opened the driver's side and was about to get in. She turned to see one of the drivers, the one who was allocated to her for that matter and who always insisted on driving her around, standing a few feet away in the garage. Carol pressed her fingers against the bridge of her nose, so not in the mood to argue with him.
"No, I don't. I'm good. Good morning to you too."
"But you're going somewhere, and it's also raining."
"Look, I'm not in the best of moods right now, so you are going to want to steer clear of me. Also, your boss sent me packing, so I'm sure that you don't need to be rendering your services to me any longer, okay?" She said, and without waiting for him to say anything else, got into the driver's seat, slammed the car door, and sped off into the rain.
At the gate, the gateman was also about to make a fuss, but after taking one look at the angry silent look she gave him, he reluctantly opened the gate. The boss and his wife seemed to be in a foul mood today and he was not about to get in the crossfire. Once she had left the house, Carol drove and drove without stopping even once to rest. Luckily enough, the car had a full tank. All the cars in Sebastian's house always did. She drove until her butt hurt from sitting in position all day. She drove through the heavy rain and thunder until the rain finally reduced in its intensity, then slowed to a drizzle, before stopping altogether and the sun came out, almost reluctantly. She drove until she was out of the city, and drove until she did not even know where she was anymore.
It felt as though she was running from Sebastian, and maybe she was. It was for the best, she now knew. There was no point forcing him to be in her child's life. The chances were that he would grow to resent the child, and eventually, resent her for forcing a child that he did not want on him. There was no question of her getting rid of her baby, as she had come to love the child very fiercely and would protect it with her last breath if it came to that. So the best thing was to do exactly as he had told her to do ... leave. She would go far away and cut off all ties to him, even if her heart shattered into a million pieces, as it was doing right now. He had shown her that he did not want her or trust her, and when someone did something like that, it was best to believe that they meant it and not make excuses for them, otherwise, that would be inviting problems in the end.
