Chapter 1: Chapter 1

My job is what you would call, "ordinary". I am a security guard, who checks people in and out daily. Nothing too tedious and nothing too excessive. The reason why I am working here is because I was supposed to start going to university, but I didn't quite have figured out what exactly I wanted to do. So, my parents offered me a job here at their company. Oh, yeah, did I mention they owned it? My parents work at a company called, "GenesisX". They study DNA and are trying to find ways to cure special illnesses.

What that illness is, I couldn't tell you because even I don't know. They've told me it's super confidential over the span of my lifetime. You'd think cancer would be a special illness they could say, but who knows. I usually work a shift between 2:30 and 10:30. I consider it the best shift because it's like babysitting. You just sit and watch monitors and ask people for I.D.'s. Like I said, not so complicated. I usually read books while on duty to help pass the time. The only ever lively and/or entertaining thing that would happen is the occasional drunkard or some people trying to get me worked up by taking pictures. It really doesn't bother me. Just smile and wave that usually works.

While on one of my shifts, a black SUV pulls up near my guard shack. I grab my notepad, pen, and place my radio at the edge of the counter in case I needed to call someone. The notepad helps keep detail of suspicious personnel. In this case, this was suspicious. It wasn't likely for anyone to show up around this time. I open the door to the shack and stand in between the door frame and wait for the passenger to roll down the window.

"Can I help you tonight, sir? I ask politely. I could make out the passenger because the light from the shack was shining enough on them. However, the driver not so much considering it was dark and the lighting wasn't the best.

"Why yes, would you happen to be Ms. Shane, toots?" He had a smug look on his face while looking me up and down. He looked to be in his mid 20's. His hair was a shaggy brown, eyes looked teal, and he had a black tank top on with a dog tag around his neck.

I felt this was gonna be one of those moments where I would tell him off, but I decided professionalism usually bothers these types.

You know, the types that think they are hottest thing to walk the planet and every woman would swoon from just a bat of a eye lash. Yeah. Not me.

"Well, yes that would be me. However, I must tell you if proceed to ask or tell me anything that does not comply or accurately describe the reason for your visit...I am gonna have to ask you to leave." I smile with the best customer service face I could give.

A burst of laughter came from the back of the SUV. "Damn! Chase! She clapped back your ass! And with professionalism! Give that girl a Oscar. Oh my god!" He continues to laugh. "Fuck off, Drake." He turns his head to look back at the person behind him, "She doesn't know me yet. Plus I am letting, you hear me? LETTING" he emphasises, "her have that one." "Yeah? Well, I am "LETTING" " Drake emphasises again, "you think that." Chase turns back around and flips Drake the bird. He focuses his attention back on me, "Look we need you to come with us. Your parents sent us to get you. Plus it's almost shift change right?" He asks matter of fact like.

"That's none of your business." I snap. Also if my parents wanted me to go with them, they would've called. "I think it's time for you all to leave." I turn to grab the radio off the counter when I hear a car door close behind me. Before I could radio someone, I feel someone come up behind me and grab my arm. I turn to face the perpetrator and come face to face with another guy. He was about 6'3, much taller than my 5'5, brown eyes like honey, and had a muscular build. His clothes look casual for a mid 20's man. I suspected everyone in the vehicle at this point were around their 20's. "Sir" I say angerly, "You need to let go of my arm and get back in your vehicle." I glare at him. "Look, we aren't going to hurt you. We need you to come with us." He holds my glare for a minute and looks confused. "Sir, I do not care what you're trying to do. You are committing a felony at this point." I snap. "You need to come with us! You're in danger!" He raises his voice a octave and looks confused again. "Get in the vehicle!" This time he shouts. I look at him bewildered like he thought yelling was going to work. I use my free hand and knock him in the stomach. His grasp loosens a bit but not enough for me to slip through. Before I could make another attempt to free myself, he angles his hand like a chop and hits the back of ny neck knocking me out cold.

"Dammit." I say before darkness over takes me.

I slowly wake from my sleep, my sight is blurry at first. I can feel like I am moving but not like I am running or walking. My vision clears and I see I am inside the black SUV, buckled in, and sitting between two people. One was another muscular guy, but his skin was a dark tan with tattoos, he wore cargo pants and a tank. The other person I sat next to was a female, her hair was blonde and wavy. It had streaks of blue in them. She wore ripped jeans with suspenders hanging over them and a tube top. Her skin was a little lighter tan and her eyes looked to be a light purple. She was gazing out the window. Why in the world were her eyes purple? I mean it's not like people couldn't have purple eyes, but it definitely was rare. The muscular guy next to me noticed my head turning and notified everyone, in the vehicle. "Hey. Miss, Oscar is awake." I instantly knew who it was when he spoke. It was Drake. I figured he was calling me Miss Oscar due to his comment about giving me an oscar for my professionalism act. "You must've knocked her pretty hard for her to be out for five hours, Trevor." Drake chuckles. Five hours?! Are you kidding me?! I am so far from home! What the hell am I gonna do now?! "Is it a hobby of yours to scare people, Drake?" The girl looking out the window was looking at Drake with a eye brow arched. "Whoa, whoa calm down, I was filling her in on how much time has passed." He raises his hands in defense. "Did you have to say he hit her hard though?" She quips back. "It's facts. Can't do much about that." She rolls her eyes and looks at me, " I know you feel completely scared right now..." she soothly talks to me, "but we aren't going to hurt you. We plan to explain once we get back to HQ." I couldn't help but believe her. It was like something about her had a calming effect. "I am Tix by the way and these dickheads...well, I am pretty sure you've met them by now." "Aye! It's Mister Dickhead to you, Pix-" before Chase could finish the last word she smacked him in the head. "Ow!" He yelps. "Keep that up I might consider you a sadist." "If you keep it up, I might consider suing you for killing my brain cells." She quips back. "Alright children play nice. If anyone is gonna sue anyone it's gonna be for listening to you both." Drake chimes in while crossing his arms and looking between them both. Trevor let's out a slight chuckle, "Well, since we are suing here...I guess I should sue you all for all the above." For the next hour they keep bantering between eachother about who should sue who.

Eventually, everyone starts doing their own thing, Drake pulls out his phone and starts texting someone, Tix looks back out the window of scenery passing by, and Trevor is focusing on the road while changing between radio stations. He stops on a station that I would listen to time to time. The song playing was Twin Skeletons by Fallout Boys. It made the ride less unsettling but I still had questions. "You guys said you needed me, why?" I ask cautiously trying to break the silence. Trevor shifts around in his seat and then sighs, "There's alot to go over but if we are going to earn your trust.." he paused for a beat, "then I suppose knowing something is better than nothing. In short terms, there is a society after you because you are unique. One of a kind per se." I furrow my brows together, "Special how? I am normal like the rest of you and a society?" "We're not "normal". " Tix quotes with her fingers, "Did they really not tell you anything?" She asks me as if she pitied me. "If you're referring to my parents, then no they haven't told me anything about a society or how i'm "special". This time I quote with my fingers. "Oh yeah she'll fit in just fine." Chase snickers in the front. "You captured Tix perrrfectly." He purred. I immediately look back at Tix, "I-I- wasn't mocking you I was-" she stopped me mid sentence with her palm out in front of her and smiled, "Like I said dickheads." She laughed. I laughed too. Suddenly it didn't feel like they meant me any harm. Still it didn't change the fact I had no idea where I was. "What about the society you mentioned and where are we?" "The society is a organization that hunts people like us and has had their eye on you for awhile now. We found you after tracking one of their subordinate's movements. As for where we are..." Drake takes a look out the window and sees a sign pass that says, "Water Valley". "Water Valley it looks like." "What are we that this organization is hunting?" They all glance at eachother as if waiting for an acknowledgement that it was O.K. to tell me. Trevor sighs and nods his head, "Supernatural beings." I couldn't help the hysterical laugh that came from me next. "Supernaturals? We're supernaturals? You mean to tell me like vampires, werewolves, and ghouls? Come on now, you can't be serious." A silence passes through the vehicle that even the quietest sound couldn't compete with. "Oh my god, you're telling the truth..." I say with disbelief evident in my voice. Before I could ask another question, Trevor pulls into a diner. Helen's Diner is what the sign read. "Finally! I about died of hunger!" Chase opens the door and takes a long stretch and makes his way to the diner's door. Drake followed after and so did Trevor. "You gonna stay in the car oscar?" Tix looks at me with the door open and her peering in. "I didn't think I was included. I don't have my money with me..." I look down and my stomach grumbles in protest. "You're not our hostage, ok maybe temporarily, but we aren't going to starve you!" She laughs. "Come on, I swear I don't bite. Yet." She winks. Tix was a unique character. She reminded me of my best friend back in highschool, so trusting her came a little more natural than the guys. "Sure." I teased. "Now you're getting it!" We followed after the guys and entered the diner. They were already sitting at a booth placing their orders. "Haven't you guys ever learned ladies first? You know chivalry?" Her words were laced with sarcasm. She had both her hands on her hips and cocked a little. "Honey, chivalry died when it met you." Chase sipped his drink while keeping eye contact with Tix. "And you wonder why you haven't found the one." "Yes, you keep scaring them away." Tix rolls her eyes and takes a seat at a nearby booth. I snicker at the way those two interact. "You and Chase seem to have it out for eachother. You surrre you don't have a thing for him?" I tease. "Oh hell no. We've been like this, since well...forever. You could say he's like an annoying brother." She picks up her menu and skims through the options. I do as well. "What can I get for you ladies?" A young waiter asks. "A cup of coffee and some buttermilk pancakes, please." Tix hands the menu to the waiter. "And for you miss?" "Oscar! Hit him with that professionalism again!" Drake calls from the other booth. I wave him off, "Ignore him, he lost a few brain cells while on the way here." Tix starts laughing, "Alright! She's a keeper! Girl power now!" She raises her hand for a high five. I high five her and look at the waiter, "Sorry, I'll take a cup of coffee as well and hashbrowns with pancakes as well." Tix and I start to bond over our meal by discussing our childhood and school life. Even some celebrities we've had crushes on. We start to talk about our families when I realize I haven't contacted my parents. They have to be so worried by now. I place my silverware on my plate and lean back in my chair. I guess I must've had a unpleasant face because Tix picked up on my distress. "Worried about your family?" "Yeah. I haven't contacted them. Who knows what is going through their heads right now...Do you think I could let them know I am ok?" She makes a thoughtful face and raises her finger to tell me to give her a moment. She gets up from her seat and makes her way over to Trevor. It looks like they are discussing my question. I could take this chance to get away but it would be pointless without a map or phone to tell me where I am going. Tix makes her way back over to the table and sits down. "You can call them before we leave, but you have to use the diner's phone. It has to be quick as well. We don't want to be tracked. It's a risk already, but we understand the situation you feel you're in." She gives me a sympathizing look and gets up to walk away. "Don't you think I will tell them where I am and who I am with?" She shakes her head no. "Something just tells me to trust you like you did me. I know it's hard, but I promise you'll have answers soon." Tix continues to walk to Trevor and the other guys. I take a moment to process what I should do. I mean they have been keeping secrets from me. What are the chances these guys are telling the truth and I really am in danger? Plus, wouldn't it be better to have an exact location than a pin point for them to track me? Tix also said she trusted me...it's kind of foolish but she hasn't done anything to discern my trust unlike my parents...Ugh! I huff to myself. I guess i'll see if their telling the truth first and go from there. I guess I am rolling the dice at the moment. They could be tricking me and I could be sold off and if they are telling the truth...well that's just another whole can of worms. I walk over to the counter to ask the clerk to borrow the diner's phone. "Sure! No problem! Just leave it on the counter when you're done." I nod and take the phone back to the booth I was in. Thank god for wireless phones. I dial my mom's number. It rings two times before she picks up.

"Hello?"
