Chapter 40: Chapter 40
Eren frowned as he ran a trembling hand over his silky black hair, not knowing what else to do.
He had never cared about a sick person before, he had no idea what to do, and the few things he knew and tried on her didn’t work.
Her fever didn’t drop even after he made her drink the whole glass of water and medicine, her breaths turned shallower, and her eyes kept on moving uncontrollably behind her closed eyelids.
The wet towel wasn’t doing much anymore but it was all he could do beside keeping her hydrated, putting the towel aside, he took her hand in his and brought it to his lips.
Her skin was too hot on his cold lips, but he didn’t mind, for she was always reverse, while he was evil and dark, she was good and bright, he was cold while she was warm, and he wondered if that was what pulled them toward each other, or at least pulled him towards her, for she was everything he was missing, pure, kind, and lighthearted.
Kissing her hand tenderly, he placed his forehead on it, closing his eyes for a second, he was tired, too tired and drained, things would have been too easy if he didn’t care about her, if he didn’t love her, but he did and it was killing him.
He should have known things would end up this way, he thought to himself, thinking back about all the signs he ignored before, he was always attracted to her, pulled by her light and allure like a moth to fire, it wasn’t her beauty though, even though she was the most beautiful woman in the world to his eyes.
It was her, as a whole entity, everything about her, everything that made her, her, her pureness and gullibility, her spontaneity and transparency, her kindness and altruism.
That beauty she had on the outside was nothing but a shell to something much more beautiful inside, he thought to himself with a sad smile.
He didn’t deserve her, but he couldn’t let her go either.
Hearing her small gasp, Eren raised his head, noticing how her breathing stopped for a second before returning, shallow and ragged.
“Sara?” he called for her, concerned, noticing the way her breath hitched in her throat only to come out as raspy gasps, and for a second, she, very slightly, opened her tired eyes, and they were completely white.
Alarmed, Eren stood up, not knowing what to do, her fever was becoming dangerously high, higher than…
Higher than a human’s, Eren thought as he looked at her, her temperature was nothing close to what a normal human can sustain, it was scorching, and out of the human range of resistance.
Which only meant that she was not a human, not in that particular moment.
She always had a better resistance, and faster healing than normal humans, Eren thought as he thickened his shadows around the room, not leaving a single opening for any possible intrusion.
This time he was adamant to keep whatever is going to happen inside his room inside his room, he didn’t want anyone but himself to know about her possible awakening! For it would only mean that she was ready to be sacrificed.
And by anyone he precisely meant a black haired, broken hearted demoness and a sly fire weasel.
“F…ather!” he heard the soft whisper, taking a deep breath, he jumped on the bed and straddled Sara’s body, blocking the naughty thoughts he had about a reversed situation, and only succeeding because of the possibility of her losing her life while he was busy with his dirty fantasies.
Did she have to look so good though?
Shaking his head, Eren regained his full focus and placed both of his hands on her temples.
“Let us see what is inside that beautiful mind of yours, my fair lady!”
Closing his eyes, Eren used his magic to seep into Sara’s mind, the same way he did in the tower when he killed the bastard who tied to rape her only to possess her.
Because she was dreaming, her mind was in the most vulnerable state, one which was very exposed to intruders such as himself, and in no time, he found himself watching her dream as if it was one of the human plays, taking place in the open market, and he was an attendant to the show.
It wasn’t a happy play though, he thought as he watched her nightmare, she was inside a room which had dark walls and no roof, the sky was a sight to behold, he thought with a frown as he stared at the mixture black and white, intertwining but not blending, the creation and the dark energy, he directly concluded.
He was right, Eren thought, her dream confirmed his doubts, the dark energy was slowly dominating the creation one, and with Sara being a half goddess, the possibility of this dream of hers being a prognosis, a foresight of what is coming in the future was very high.
Their world was going to be swallowed by the dark energy, he thought, starting by the edges, where the dark clouds were invading the horizon and approaching them each day.
The coming darkness wasn’t going to stop at the edges though, Eren thought as he focused more on the shapes of the creation energy, the entire world was going to be swallowed except for the center!
The humans were going to face the same fate as the demons, all while the Gods monopolized the creation energy and its protection to themselves.
The Gods, again, were going to offer them, all of them, as a feast to death and only save themselves.
Eren gritted his teeth as he stared at the whiteness gathering on itself, until it was nothing but small twinkling stars in the middle of the dark.
Just like the night sky she loved so much.
Looking back at the room, he found his fair lady standing in one of the corners, totally oblivious of his existence, she looked scared, her knees trembling and her eyes fixated on a woman standing in the middle of the room.
The woman, with her long silver hair and shiny dress made of silver scales, had her eyes on him, and even though they had the same mesmerizing color of Sara’s eyes, they were actually nothing like his beloved gentle and tender ones, the woman’s eyes were sharp and full of power and pride, not to forget menace, and Eren had no problem knowing who she was.
Historia.
Eren knew about her existence in Sara’s dreams from when his fair lady told him about the scary nightmares she was having, about the woman who looked like her but wasn’t her.
It was how the shadows’ lord came up with the conclusion that a near death experience was the way to awaken her other half, knowing that Historia was already dead, he understood that the person Sara was seeing was her divine half, the one she inherited from her mother.
Sara told him before, during that night where they had dinner together in his patio, about what she saw and felt when she was drowning in the river, the closer she got to the woman, the harder it was for her to breathe, the more painful it was to breathe, she even thought she was going to die.
A close death experience, Eren thought, he knew her divine blood was dormant since the very first time he saw her, the problem was, how to wake it up, that is why, when she told him about her nightmares, he thought about pushing her to the verge of death until her divine blood resurfaces to save her life.
It didn’t work though, Eren thought about the time when Geraldine had tortured her to the point where she almost died, but her divine blood made no signs of waking up.
Eren stared at the woman, noticing the subtle changes that differentiated her from Sara, she had sharper chin, sharper nose, and sharper cheekbones, her eyebrows were also naturally high, giving her an intimidating appearance, she stared at him, with a menacing gaze but Eren wasn’t threatened.
Her divine half knew he was there, but it wasn’t able to do anything about it.
The woman looked back to Sara, ushering her to go to this black door but Sara kept on shaking her head in refusal.
The door was the only way out, which meant that she didn’t want to wake up, he concluded.
“I want to go home!” Sara cried out when the woman kept on insisting that she walks towards the door, but the girl was so adamant not to go, not to go back to the terrifying reality.
“I want to go home.” She cried again and Eren had to swallow his guilt and bitterness.
This broken and scared state she was in, too scared to even live, was entirely his fault.
“Father is there!” the woman voiced out without moving her lips, and as if her words were all the poor girl lacked.
“Father!” she whispered, her face a mix of shock, realization, and utter horror and worry, and before he could see anything else, a blinding light took over the room and pushed him out of her dream.
Eren gasped, hardly controlling his ragged breath as he was thrown to the opposite wall, his shadows catching him before he can take any actual damage, however, the fact that he was thrown off her body and not just her mind was astonishing, she was still asleep, but he was still perfectly able to detect her aura.
It was faint and small, but it was there, and it was no longer human.
Eren looked around his room, and indeed, not a single piece of furniture was spared, glass was shattered everywhere around the room, broken items scattered messily here and there, but most importantly, his hands.
Eren looked at his fingertips which were placed on her temples and were now sore and swollen, not to mention painful.
Burned, Eren thought as he looked at her, not knowing whether he should laugh or cry.
And here he thought it was the physical pain that was going to wake her divine blood, here he thought she was like any other creature, selfish when her life endangered, but she wasn’t!
She wasn’t like anyone, for even in her weakest, she cared not about herself, but about her father!
