Chapter 23: Chapter 23
It was a bright evening, a week now since she was back at Dixon’s house. The stars glimmers just above her heads, She had been alone, since Dixon left to see his friend in prison, and he hadn’t returned. In her eyes were a glint of hope, of a new beginning, a dawn of a new era. Where she would be human, everyone was allowed to dream, Dixon had told her, and her dream was to be human again, right next to him, forever.
The pains hit her on her chest, sending her screaming in agony. The hope she was feeling before all wiped out. She was allowed to dream, cause she wasn’t like every other person, her fate was already decided. She just had to accept it, that she would leave Dixon very soon. Behind her bed, was her calendar, written just thirty days.
She backed away from the window, into the floor, her eyes were springing out blood, these passing day it had only become worse. Each night, she felt the pain of death. It wasn’t something to behold.
Her hair was covered in a bobble hat.
She crawled to the mirror, and pulled the hat away from her head, most of her red brown hair was off and white hair was growing. Another strand fell off, she took it and hid them on the drawer.
She was changing. She stood, when the pain lessen, and took the marker from the bedside table, and ticked. A day was gone.
She slumped. With her hand on gripping her chest.
She’d been having the pains for a while now, without Dixon being aware, of it, she doesn’t know how long she’s gonna hide the pains and her now growing white hair.
Ever since she hasn’t been herself. She changes completely at night. And change back in the morning. Just a month before the full eclipse and everything would be permanent, her chances to of being human dies away.
The only thing she’s now is to hope, the hope that she doesn’t feel anymore, though it’s still a week young. But it doesn’t seems so to her, Dr. Green had been working on finding answers, something they could do, so she could be human, but there hasn’t been any news from him. If she doesn’t get an answer before the full eclipse...
She’s gone.
She would never get to be beside Dixon again. If something has to be done, it has to be now. Else.
She’s gone.
For good.
She covered her hair back with the bobble hat. Staring at her eyes having a mixture of black and white. Her hands were shaken. She clasped them over her head. Dixon would be home soon. She doesn’t want him to find her this way. He’s gonna ask, and she isn’t ready to let him know yet. She couldn’t tell him. Not now. Though he had witnessed the first attack, she doesn’t want him to know, but he had been suspicious, something was wrong. But he hadn’t been pressuring her on it. She doesn’t know if she would ever tell him.
She’s dying.
“Alien! I’m home!”
“I’m so sorry I’m late. Stuck up in traffic.”
He was fond of calling her that name, she kinda like it though. She’s wants to call him something aside his name but she doesn’t know what to call him. He had been so sweet to her, buying her a lot of stuffs. She doesn’t even know what it is. Yet he said he doesn’t have money, how come he spends so much on clothes, bags and shoes, she’s not even gonna wear. And he’s still poor. That she doesn’t understand, and he’s paying the lawyer on Eamon‘ case.
He’s definitely hiding something. She was certain.
She heard his footsteps and as he hurried upstairs, directly to her room. She was still feeling weak. And couldn’t reply his call.
“Alien!” He whacked the door opened and turned on the light.
“Are you scared of light?” He asked. Though he hadn’t seen her yet. His eyes scanned around.
“I’m here.” Her faint reply came.
“You should knock. What if I was naked.”
His eyes then fell on her beside the door.
“I’m sorry.”
“Remember, you didn’t let me in your room the other night, cause I didn’t knock, and just barge in, like you just did, you asked me to go back and knock. Now, you know what to do.”
“Payback time, huh?”
He throw his hands in the air and walked back to the door, and shut it behind him, then knocked a twice before she told him to come in.
“Satisfied?”
“Yeah”
She nodded.
“Are you okay, you sound weak.”
“I’m alright.”
He squat. Holding her hands. Looking directly at her eyes.
“What ain’t you telling me.”
“Nothing.”
“Friends don’t lie remember.”
She looked away.
“I’m fine.”
“Why do you always have you light turned off?”
“I don’t know, it just went off.”
True.
It was on, a while ago, it could have went out when she was having pains. She hadn’t notice, she sees brighter at night.
“You...”
“Yes..” she replied him. She already knew what he was going to ask. But she didn’t tell him the reason why, it wasn’t just her normal changes. This was different.
“C’mon then, I got something for you, I ordered something too. I knew it was already late and you’re definitely hungry. I got something for us as dinner. It’s downstairs.”
“You don’t have to worry about anything, I’ll take care of you. And we’ll find a way to make you human again. I don’t mind giving you my blood every night. Dr. Green said , that’s the only to sustain your urge for murder. You can take mine.”
“No, I don’t want to.”
“You won’t have a choice, he’ll come over in the morning.”
“Don’t have your hopes up. You would only get hurt.”
He cupped her cheeks.
“There has to be way.”
“And if there isn’t? Don’t push it please. I’ll still be a blood sucking demon!”
“Stop saying it.”
“Are you disgusted by it.” She gritted her teeth.
“No, you won’t be forever.”
“What do you even know.”
She stood up, her feet wobble a little. She couldn’t walk downstairs, she was still weak.
“Carry me, will you.”
“I haven’t seen you all day.” She had to change the tension in the air, else something else might happen. She might just spill it out, she doesn’t have enough time yet.
He smiled and slip her off her feet, carrying her in bridal style. He so much want to help, he had to do something for her, she’s to be human again. If it doesn’t work, she will still be a half demon, he could cope with that, giving her his blood. So she doesn’t kill that much. He’s still gonna do it.
“You miss me?”
“Just a little.”
Lie.
She missed him a whole day, he wasn’t with her, she wanted to talk to him, reach out to him. She doesn’t know how to do all that. And She longed for him all day.
she was still trying to get used to not be around him all day.
“I missed you so much.” He pecked her cheeks. She smiled in his hands and wrapped her hands tightly around him.
“I know you miss me just as much.”
She buried her head in his neck. Melting in his smells of heat.
He took her downstairs, gently counting his steps.
“I bought some beef kerb. Am sure you’re gonna like them.”
She only nodded.
“Are you tired? You’ve been acting weird. Is something wrong?”
“I’m just a little tired. You don’t have to get worked up.”
“And why are you covering your hair?”
“I want to.”
“Maeve..”
“I’m fine.”
He dropped her on the couch and tucked her loose hair behind her ears.
“I know you’re fine. I just don’t want you hiding something from me.”
She pulled him closer to her and hugged him.
“And you’ve been acting all clingy.”
He pulled away and look her in the eye. Taking the next seat beside her. He opened a bag, he kept on the couch, a paper fell from it. Maeve took it and opened the rolled paper.
She’d seen something like this before, and he had had it thrown out.
“What is this?”
“It’s a contract.”
“What for?” He stopped fishing into the bag, giving her a side glance.
“So I get to sing again.”
“What! What’re you waiting for, you should hurry up. I want to see you see again and play.”
“No way.”
“Yes way.”
“I can’t sing again, but just for you only. I have a million anti fan. Everyone turned against me.”
“Then why were you giving this, if they all did turned against you like you said. Why would they give you a contract.”
He sighed. Leaning his back on he couch.
“There was an article someone made, she was a fan, though she’s dead now, it kinda stirred a lot of emotions on socials. And it still is, at the moment. Maybe that’s why I was offered the contract. But it isn’t gonna work.”
“What do you mean. You hadn’t even tried it yet. And you’re giving up already, you’re helping your friend and you can’t help yourself.”
“I don’t know if I can do it again, it’s been five years, it’s gone bad, it isn’t as it was years ago. I can’t face the crowds like I used to or hold up a mic.”
“But you didn’t do anything wrong.”
“It still doesn’t change if I did it or not. I’m ruined, that’s just it.”
“But you can do it, I know you can, just like you sang for me.”
“It isn’t that easy. No one wants to listen to my songs or hear me sings. They don’t care about my music. It won’t work”
“You seems so certain it won’t work.”
She dropped her head to the ground, crestfallen. He was determined not to sing again. She can’t force him too. She just had to give him some time.
“Is that what you want?”
She nodded.
“I want to see you up there. So I get to scream your name and go crazy when you perform on stage. Just like in the movie we watched.”
“Is that the reason you ain’t smiling. I’ll have to meet up with mr Jackson tomorrow then. He gave me the contract. Can you smile now?”
She smiled.
“But I still can’t guarantee it’s gonna be a success.”
“But he believes in you. That’s what matters. He keep offering the contract to come sing again. But I don’t want to share you with anyone.” She pouted her lips.
Dixon laughed.
“There would be a lot of crazy fans on my tail, You’ll have to keep up with.”
“Then, don’t go.” She whines and hugged me. He chuckled pulling her closer to himself.
“I’ll always be by your side.”
“Even when I’m not there.”
“You’ll be right here.” He poke his index finger on his chest.
“In my heart..”
she blushed and buried her head on his chest. Memories to always remember. Stuck right here in her own heart.
“I bought you this.” Dixon brought out the phone from the bag. Giving it to her.
“I’ve everything inset in here, so you can get to call me anytime you want.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, Like today, when I’m out, you could get to call me and we’ll talk.” Showing her how to use it. He knew she would be able to learn quickly, she was smart. He was thinking of getting a teacher but he doesn’t want her to get so exposed yet. The best thing was to keep hiding her, she must remain in secret. And he would be the only teacher and lover she needs.
“Why are you calling me?” He chuckled. Staring down at his phone.
“I’m right here.”
“Just pick up.”
“Hello.”
“Where are you?”
He laughed for a while.
“I’m right here, in front of you.”
“Where is the beef you bought?”
“Besides me.”
“Open it, and give me a bite. Hold on, I’ll get a glass of wine.”
“What’s the occasion?”
“You’re getting signed.”
“Seriously?”
She smirked and jumped off the couch towards the wine cellar and pulled out a bottle.
“You really are serious with this thing, I’m not even signed yet.”
“But you’ll be.”
He walked up to her, taking the phone from her hands and took her in his arms. Back to the couch, and pulled her down on the couch with him on top, their bodies were perfectly aligned
