Chapter 153: Chapter 153
The atmosphere in the room grew tense and even more chaotic as the full extent of the Callahan family’s crimes was revealed.
The media scrambled to get a good shot of everything, cameras flashing and reporters frantically scribbling notes. It was too late to do damage control now.
Gregory Callahan slumped back in his seat, his face drained of color. He looked like an old man now, tired and resigned. It seemed that even he had accepted that the evidence was too strong and undeniable.
Christian’s face, on the other hand, turned a deep shade of red, his anger barely contained.
This was probably the first time anyone had seen him lose his temper. Normally, he was calm and even-tempered, exuding quiet arrogance and magnetic intimidation. He wasn’t the type to fly off the handle, and yet here he was, displaying his hidden anger for all to see.
“You think you can ruin me with this circus?” Christian spat venomously. “Then I will take you all down with me. You all forced my hand!” He pointed at Michael and said coldly, “You’ve been having secret affairs with my fiancée since the industry gala four months ago. I know all about it.”
The audience fell silent again, stunned.
Everything was happening too fast for them to fully process.
“Ha!” Christian shook his head, a manic, dangerous energy emanating from his aura. “If you think you can destroy me with your lies and fabricated evidence, think again. You must think you’re so righteous, don’t you, Michael McGregor? Playing the hero. But now, let’s talk about your dirty little secret.”
The audience shifted uncomfortably, sensing another revelation.
This was quite the day for everyone.
But the journalists were clearly having a field day. They could already imagine the big paycheck coming their way.
Michael’s eyes narrowed, but he said nothing, holding his ground.
Christian smirked, his voice dripping with venom. “Yes, that’s right. Michael McGregor and Camille Parker — my own fiancée — have been plotting behind my back all along. But you know what? Yes, let’s talk about Camille Parker… or rather, Hailey van Gowen.”
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
The van Gowen name was very well-known, and they hadn’t heard the name Hailey associated with it in years.
“No way! Camille Parker is Hailey van Gowen? The eldest daughter who disappeared all those years ago?!” The journalists leaned forward, eager to hear every word.
Camille felt her heart pounding in her chest and squirmed uncomfortably.
Christian continued, his voice seething with contempt. “She isn’t just a victim. She is an accomplice. As my secretary, the two of us worked closely together for years. She was also involved in a number of crimes. She played a pretty big role in most of them.”
The crowd stirred at that.
Patricia stared at her brother in disbelief, then at Camille, who avoided everyone’s gaze.
Meanwhile, Michael’s frown grew deeper and deeper.
“She provided me with the information that led to Harold Huckington’s downfall, and she remained silent throughout all the crimes,” Christian continued in a somewhat manic tone. “She knew so many things, and yet she stayed quiet. Maybe if she had spoken up, none of the crimes would have happened. But in truth, she was my accomplice, willingly carrying out my orders!”
The room then erupted into chaos.
Reporters shouted questions, and cameras flashed with renewed fervor. Camille felt exposed, the weight of Christian’s words pressing down on her like several blocks of cement.
She had expected something like this, but if the situation went out of control, even she couldn’t predict what the final outcome would be.
Maybe it was a mistake to spring all of this big revelation to everyone in just a single day…
Suddenly, at that moment, Michael’s voice cut through the hall, calm and authoritative.
“That’s enough, Mr. Callahan,” he said. “Miss Parker was under duress. She was manipulated by you. Coerced, blackmailed, and threatened to do all your dirty work. She was unaware the whole time that you were planning crimes as serious as murder.”
Christian laughed harshly, a grating sound that echoed through the hall. “Is that what she told you? Actually, she kept quiet and did everything I asked! She’s as guilty as I am,” he said in amusement. “She played you all and pretended to be innocent. What fools you all are!”
The officers who had been waiting in the back moved forward. “Christian Callahan, you are under arrest for conspiracy, attempted murder, and multiple other charges,” the lead officer announced, his voice carrying a note of finality.
But Christian wasn’t done yet. “She’s a traitor!” he laughed. “She betrayed each and every one of you. You are all truly idiots!”
As Christian was finally escorted away, his accusations hung heavily in the air, casting a dark shadow over the event.
Camille sat frozen, her mind racing with the implications. It was one thing to predict this outcome, and it was another thing to be personally faced with it.
Honestly? It was scary. It was too intimidating to be at the center of negative attention like this all alone.
She knew the truth of her actions and the fear that had driven them, but now she had to prove it to everyone else.
What if they didn’t believe her?
Meanwhile, the shock was palpable for those that were in the hall. Nobody else had left except for some officers and Christian.
Whispers of disbelief filled the room, some of them reaching Camille’s ears. Her legs felt like lead as she tried to process the enormity of what had just happened.
She glanced at Michael, but just then, police officers approached her.
“Miss Parker, we need you to come with us for questioning.”
She nodded numbly. Right, she needed to do this first.
Michael stared after her as she was led away alongside Gregory Callahan.
Everything was a mess, but at least Christian was finally taken away. Michael had no doubt that Camille would be proven innocent and face much lesser charges than Christian. He would see to it and be there for her every step of the way.
Meanwhile, Patricia Callahan was sobbing. As her father and brother were taken away, she collapsed to the ground.
Michael hurried over to her.
“Hey,” he said quietly.
She raised her head shakily and looked up at him. “Is my family going to be okay?” she asked in a weak voice.
Michael’s heart broke a little at her tone.
There were a lot of things he had to do today, but at least most of them were going according to plan.
He just had to trust Camille. He would be there for her soon.
It was time to pick up the pieces for now.
