Chapter 44: Chapter 44
"What!!!" I found myself exclaiming in surprise as I heard the suicide message she sent to me through the mind link. The staff in my hand fell off as my lips went wide open in fear that just engulfed me, yet I don't know why I was scared on hearing of her death.
I tried connecting back to her to check if it was true, and for real, I couldn't locate a trace of her soul. It was lost, which means she was really dead.
"Alpha, what is it?" Everyone spoke out to me at the same time, darting their eyes at me in surprise.
"Ava is dead." I announced, and there was an uproar of excitement from everyone inside the palace room.
"Finally!!!" The Beta's mate shrieked in happiness.
"This calls for celebration!" The Beta added that even the guards couldn't hold back their smiles at the news, which was a very great one for them.
"The pack members will be so happy to hear this!" One of the elders shouted, and they all went on with their jubilations as if they had won a lottery. As I sat there watching them, I kept wondering if this was good news or very sad and scary news.
The door of the palace gave way at that moment, and everyone turned their gazes to the door, including me. Nana and Aurora walked in with huge smiles on their faces.
"That cursed child, Ava, is dead!" The Beta didn't hesitate to announce it to them, even after it was clear that Nana would have been the first to know since they both left for school together.
I was only able to maintain a smile while battling with the fear in my heart. The rogue is out there waiting to attack us, and again, my daughter died the same day.
These two incidents aren't something I should panic about, but it was beyond my power to push them aside. Those last words from Ava this morning were creeping back into my head, especially when she hinted at knowing who killed my mate.
When Ava asked me whether I was finally ready to hear the truth from her, I couldn't deny the feeling she really knew who was the real killer, but Aurora came in just at that moment when I asked her if she knew the killer of my mate and son.
"Nana had succeeded in making your dream come true. That devil of a daughter is finally gone." Aurora chirped at me, grinning from ear to ear. The joy on her face and tone was palpable as she fixed her gaze on mine.
The happiness was kind of different. It was as if Ava was a huge hindrance. I had noticed that Aurora had a deeper hatred for Ava but had neglected it, and now seeing how glad she was about her death, I was now getting my suspicions about her.
"You went to the school to get Nana back home?" I queried her, curtly, and everywhere went silent. Everyone was surprised at my sudden question, which wasn't what they all expected from me. Even Aurora was confused that she couldn't reply.
"No, she didn't come to pick me up. We met on the way to the palace. I was coming in and met her at the door, so we came in together." Nana responded sharply, and my eyes darted at her for some seconds before returning back to Aurora, who made a nod at what Nana just said.
"Aurora, the sorcerer from the vampire kingdom, couldn't find who killed my mate. Why were you so sure about him that you didn't allow me to hear what Ava had to tell me about the killer of my mate?" I shot at her angrily, but didn't see any form of fear on her face.
My voice was so gruffy and dangerous that everyone cowered and bowed in fear, but only Aurora was still standing and staring back at me.
"We were only giving him a try. I didn't say he would find the answer, and besides, if it isn't Ava who killed her, who else?" She replied, maintaining a cool smile that showed how undisturbed she was.
"Call the guards at the entrance of this packhouse!" I ordered the royal guard beside me, and he bowed and hurried out immediately.
"Alpha, you are acting strangely, which I don't understand. This place shouldn't be this tense when a curse was just lifted from this pack. You had always wanted Ava to kill herself, and it is done. Why aren't you overly excited instead of attacking the innocent woman, Aurora, who had always wanted the best for our pack? " The Beta threw the question at me in a confused tone.
I shut my eyes, taking a deep breath as I tried to analyze everything. My instincts were horribly warning me of a looming danger, and those dreadful feelings are heightened every time I look at Aurora's face.
"Go and start making the preparations and war strategy with the pack warriors and hunters for that rogue battle. Give them my response that we will wipe them out if they show up for the war. You all, except Nana and Aurora, are dismissed!" I stated in a commanding voice, which made everyone instinctively rise from their feet and head out of the door.
I was sitting there with only one personal guard flanking me as the other had gone on the errand I sent him on. I needed to give the personal guard a different dismissal before he would leave my side, but as I prepared to do that, I felt another rush of fear. It was the fear of staying without a shield in front of Aurora.
If you ask me why I was suddenly scared of Aurora, I can't even explain it.
"Is he staying?" Aurora asked abruptly, on seeing I left the left hand guard. Her question made shudders run through my spine as my fear seemed to be a reality that Aurora was something else. I was just recalling that she was a woman I didn't know anything about and just took her in without proper investigation.
I can't tell who her family lineage is or where she lived before coming to my pack. Everything Ava told me this morning was really echoing inside me continuously, and I began to regret so badly why I left with Aurora instead of staying back and hearing what she had to tell me.
I just lost the last opportunity to find out the truth. Now Ava is no more. My eyes glanced over to Nana, and she was sweating and fidgeting while sticking her eyes down to the ground where she was staring.
"I want him to stay here." I managed to reply to Aurora, and she gave me a cool smile. At that same time, the guard returned with the entrance door guard, which I had sent him to call.
"Did Nana and Aurora walk in here together?" I asked, and there was a huge confusion on his face as he turned sharply at Nana, who had always looked up.
"I didn't see them walk in. I didn't even know Nana had returned from school. It isn't closing hour yet. Her driver and the car aren't back too." The guard replied, and Nana was literally shaking now.
What is happening??
