Chapter 39: Chapter 39
Chapter 38
Garfield West ~
Great! Its seven minutes until six O’clock. I better head down to Red’s to pick her up for her special night with a musical superstar.
“Off to school for the Halloween festivities?” Mr. West asked fixing up the bag of treats that he usually gives to the trick-or-treating youngsters every year.
“Yes. Mind telling me where you kept the keys to the cars? I can’t seem to find the one I intend to use.” I asked with an arched brow.
“They’re over there!” “But remember,….”
“No Scratches and Drive Safe! Yeah, I know. You don’t have to tell me that every single time I intend on taking a car out for a drive.” I asked walking to the casement where the keys hung under a hook.
“Yes, I do. The fact that I’m rich doesn’t mean you get to do whatever nonsense you like with things just because you know that I can fix it. Someday, all these would be yours including my position as the C.E.O of the company so doesn’t think that I’ll want you going mad on everything just because you can.” “So I’ll keep on saying these things just so you know.” Mr. West said with his eyes glued on Garfield.
“Wow dad! All I asked for was the location of the keys you moved not another sermon on the boring life that you and mom expect me to live as the C.E.O of some company that I barely know anything about.” I said taking the key off the hook and heading for the door. “You and I know entirely well that the company would be better if Zack runs it.”
“Yeah, maybe but the choice remains mine and I choose you not your brother! By the way, nice costume, son. I guess you’re supposed to be…. A lycan.”
“Yeah!” I replied going out the door and slamming it hard behind me.
“Don’t be late for curfew!!!” I heard my dad shout out from inside the house.
I wonder what’s up with him and mom. Ever since I turned eighteen, it has been nothing but lectures on how very soon, he would be handing over his position of the C.E.O of his company to me and all those crap. To be honest to myself, I know within myself that I’m in no way ready for that shit. Today’s lectures came as a shock because I wasn’t expecting him to make a sermon out of my request.
I waved off the thoughts of all he had just said and walked to the garage. I pressed the button on the remote of the car and it gave the command that opened all locks in it. I got into the car and got it started.
“Holy shit!” it was a minute to six O’clock and I was barely about to leave my dad’s garage.
I turned the car on turbo speed even when I knew that my dad would peel me to pieces if he ever found out I did and sped out of the garage, out the gates and into the roadway. I was about a ten minutes’ drive away from where Red and her mom lived but with the turbo speed turned on; I know that I can make it there in weigh less time.
In spite of the various distractions brought about by holiday designs and kids in spooky, amusing and shocking costumes alike, I was able to get to Red’s house just in a time of very insignificant lateness.
I got down from the car, went up the front porch and pressed the doorbell making it ring out a scream. That wasn’t the usual tune that followed pressing Red’s doorbell but I guess her mom got it customized for Halloween.
“Hey, Mrs. Flora Is Red still home?” I asked with a feeble smile as the door went open revealing Red’s mom.
“No! She went for the school’s Halloween festivities about thirty minutes ago.” She replied sharply.
“Seriously? She couldn’t have….”
“Nah! I was just messing with you. Red is upstairs. She’s been waiting for you for some few minutes. Stay right here while I go get her.” Mrs. Flora said returning the smile. “By the way, that’s a great lycan costume. You make an excellent alpha while you wear it.” She added from inside the house as she climbed the indoor staircase.
“Thanks!” I yelled with a voice that she was most likely to be able to hear.
I waited patiently for some seconds and the next thing I heard that was able to grab my attention was the sound of a pair of shoes running down the stairs.
RED.
“You are late!” she said looking at me straight in the eyes with folded arms.
“And you look…. you look….. Astonishing. Tonight you won’t just sound like a star, you’ll be one.” I said grasping Elena in all her beauty.
For the first time in a while, my heart felt something much deeper than friendship towards Red while I look I her. Maybe it’s the witch costume or maybe it’s the full moon playing some pranks on my heart but never have I had this particular feeling for anyone, not even Molly.
Barely looking at her was making my eyes paralyzed.
“Thanks. So, do you want to go to the festivities at school or are you going to keep standing there looking at me, like that?” Red said snapping me out of whatever trance that I was under.
“Oh! Yeah!” I interjected before walking her to the car.
“I’m guessing your dad definitely doesn’t know about all those marks?” Red said pointing to a couple of scratches by the left hand side lights of the rear of the car.
“It was either those or I would’ve been here a lot later than I am now.” I replied opening up the car door for her so she could get in.
Red got in holding her witch hat in her hand. I turned around to the driver’s seat and got in. I looked towards the house and found Red’s mom giving us both a waving hand. She looked quite happy from where she stood.
If only she knew what her daughter was going to do against her wish at the school’s Halloween festivities. I returned the wave and set the car for ignition by the push of a button. The car engine started and with no time wasted, it was in motion heading for the celebration of the most important event of the day, HALLOWEEN.
