Chapter 29: Chapter 29

The howl of the cold wind made my skin shiver as I yelped from my sleep. I looked around in panic to see where I was. It was wet beneath my feet, my knees shivering to stay up. I was panting but all I inhaled was the horrid smell of moss and decay. My sight landed on the metal bars across me, they were rusty and old. Now, I’m sure that I am locked up in the basement inside one of the cells.

“Help me!” A weak voice whimpered, her soft voice echoed inside the cold room.

I narrowed my eyes to see clearly whose voice was that. My sight was blurry for a moment, I couldn’t recognize a thing. I blinked twice to let my sight adjust and there, I saw who it was.

“Saskia?” I recognized the blonde braid that is now kept in a messy state, strands falling on her face.

What is she doing here?

My brows knotted, “Why are you here?”

“Feyre?” Her voice cracked and a son broke out from her lips.

“What happened?” I asked as I took in her dirty appearance.

She cried, “Oh, help me. Please!”

I gasped in horror when she tilted her head and looked around, her ears strained to hear her surroundings. Then I saw blood, running down her eyes. I couldn’t see a white in her eyes, only a coat of darkness and blood. She’s blind. Her eyeballs were gone.

There were shackles wrapped around her wrists and ankles, a strip of metal is stuck around her neck as well. Just like mine. We were chained to the mossy walls of the castle's basement.

For a moment, silence covered the room. Only the water dripping from the leaking faucet was heard in the near distance. I couldn’t mutter a thing from what I am seeing right now.

Saskia made noises with her chains. “Are you there?”

I nodded even though she couldn't see me.

“Yes, I am here.” I swallowed a lump in my throat, my eyes watering at the sight of her state.

Until her end, they’re planning on making her their dog. Based on her condition, she’s losing more blood and as time passes by she’ll die in this filthy place. She won’t last in a few days.

“They also lock me up.” I said.

Saskia’s shoulder fell tiredly. As if those words just cracked her tiny shell of hope.

A few seconds later, the sound of her soft sobs echoed.

“No, no, no.” She kept repeating.

“What are we going to do now?” She bawled. I could feel the stinging pain from her sockets with the contact of salty tears.

I let out a shaky breath, “I don’t know.” I looked down on the pool of dirty water, a few rats sprinting across the grotty cell.

Minutes, hours I think have passed. There were no signs of them. Until my eyes started to dry, I blinked a couple of times to stay awake but my whole body felt so tired and aching. I needed to close my eyes and try to sleep even though I'm standing in chains and all I could do was nap for a few minutes.

I was again being pulled by darkness.

“Are you awake?” A familiar voice said softly.

But I couldn't open my eyes without seeing a blur. So I kept my eyes shut.

“Sage?” I asked, my voice came out raspy.

My eyes looked around and saw that Saskia was asleep. In front of me was Sage holding a bag of fluid. He took a step towards me and held my arm.

I winced in pain when I felt something sunk in my skin. My eyes fluttered open and I saw a needle attached to my vein. There was a pack of dark, violet liquid sucking inside the tubes, and the unknown liquid is being delivered into my body.

“What is this?” I asked, my tone came to be as sharply.

“Ambrose's order.” He simply said.

“Sage, please! I didn't mean to. It was an accident. Believe me, please.” I stared right into his orbs, desperately wanting for his help.

“Izaac is dead, Feyre. You killed him. You killed our friend. Maybe you deserve this.” His words stung me entirely.

I cried, “I am your friend too, right? Please help me, Sage.”

“I'm sorry but I am not in the place to offer help.”

“At least let Saskia out,” I paused to take a breath

“She’s dying,” I said, I am out of breath for no reason.

“I am in no position to disobey his orders,” His eyes darkened before he left me. I knew whom he was referring to. It was Ambrose again and his godforsaken orders.

“Please, let us out!” I screamed, crying while at it.

It was an accident, I swear. It must've been one of my episodes. I truly have no idea how he died like that.

With a tired sigh, I stared at the ground blankly.

Maybe I really do deserve being locked up in here. It wasn't just me who had to suffer a loss. They also lost their friend, their old friend. I just could not believe that this is how Izaac's life would end.

What have I done?

I ruined our friendship. I ruined their trust in me. I ruined myself. Shit, they're right. I was dangerous and I still am, much more dangerous than their kind. What in the world am I thinking of staying here with them? I should’ve left the moment I knew about my powers. These abilities I have were indeed a curse.

I should’ve left when she told me to. Is this why she wanted me to leave? That redhead lady who often visits me in my dream kept running in my mind the whole day until I felt the exhaustion come to me.

The last thing my eyes have fallen to was the violet fluid now running through my veins. I don’t know what it was but I’m sure Ambrose won’t put it inside my veins out of the goodness of his heart. He wishes to contain me, to be their prisoner.

What more is the reason if not for a punishment?

The sunlight has graced the dark basement. However, there are still parts in the room that are inhabited by shadows like my cell and Saskia's. Only a little portion of light has penetrated through the window on the far corner of this basement.

“Saskia? Are you still there?” My vision became blurry again. The smell of decay and dead rats has filled my nostrils, making me gulp and try not to puke.

“Yeah,” Her voice was low and weak.

We waited again for hours but no one visited us, even Sage. Days went by and faded like dust in the wind and still, no signs of them in the castle. I couldn't hear what's going on outside these walls. Have they abandoned us?

The next morning, I woke up with the same smell. Each day I am awake feels like hell, my eyes blurry and my whole body aching and sore from standing up. If I don’t stand up, these chains are going to tear up my flesh from my wrists and my ankles as well.

“Saskia,” I called, my voice came out as dry as my throat.

I shouted her name again but she wasn’t responding. I couldn’t hear her breathing either. No, no, no.

“Oh, god. Please, Saskia! Wake up!” I screamed on top of my lungs as I shook these shackles for her to hear.

“Sage!” I called for help.

Minutes of screaming, my lips pressed into a line. The dryness of my throat and the soreness from all the yells were overwhelming.

“Help us, please.” I trailed off until my jaw couldn’t move anymore.

I was left stunned when her body wasn't moving, no reactions from all the noises I made.

“She’s dead,” I whispered to myself.
