Chapter 49.

‘’You are pregnant for me? How long are you? When did you get pregnant are you sure that you …’’ I cut him off perfectly. He is worked up and I don’t know why.

‘’Shut up, Harrison! You are going to make me go irrational! You are not supposed to be asking me a truckload of queries in one second. I am not in the mood to answer your questions. If you don’t trust me, then let it go. I will survive.’’

‘’It’s okay, beautiful. I am sorry. You know I am going through so much and sometimes I forget myself, I forget who I am and what I should be doing.’’ I smile mentally when I hear him talk. This is so not the Harrison, I met at the bus station on my first day in the city. He is even saying sorry now and that’s a first.

Anyway, things do change for sure.

‘’Don’t worry about it, just take me gently and I will respond to you. Sorry, I have shouted, it shouldn’t be like that.’’ I tell him quietly. ‘’I am just from the hospital and I am still weak. I need to take a good rest and the doctor had advised that I be cautious and avoid stress.’’

‘’And I will surely help you with that, I don’t want you being stressed even a little bit. Baby!’’ I lift my eyes up and look at him in the eyes. I don’t say a word totally. ‘’You are pregnant for me? You … like …. are ….you know, carrying my baby? Baby, that’s the best gift I could ask for from you. That’s what I have wanted my whole life and that’s the beauty of our relationship.’’ He is crying. Wow! Is he happy? Are those tears of joy?

I pull my eyes away from his gaze. I don’t want to watch him for long because believe it or not, my pregnancy just made me a weakling, my tears are totally very close and I do cry easily. I blink several times to avoid that.

I fail at it terribly though because tears trickle one after the other and when Harrison brings his thumb to dry them, I feel his touch on my cheeks and I smile internally.

He moves very slowly and holds me very gently then carries me delicately and sets me on the floor to stand on my feet. I watch in owe as he goes on his feet his tears flowing without shame. I wonder what’s with him.

I try to stop him but he insists so, I let him. Whatever he wanna do, he can go ahead and do that.

‘’Baby,’’ he calls once he is down on his knees. ‘’Thank you so much for giving me one of the most and the best wonderful gifts a man can get from a woman. Now I get why all over sudden you got so mad at me, you ran away from me and why you are now eating ice cream and vanilla for that matter. Then you got pale all over sudden and you couldn’t tell me what the problem was. I love you, I love our baby and I love us. Beautiful,’’ he calls me yet again.

‘’Yes, love,’’ I respond calmly and quietly.

‘’Promise me that you are going to take care of our baby. That you are not going anywhere close to mum and that you will stay safe everywhere. Don’t worry about the latter because I will make sure that you stay safe by all means.’’

I smile at him. You don’t know how much relieved I am right now. For a moment there, I thought that he was going to propose to me and believe you me, I don’t know what my answer to that would be. Maybe, I would have disappointed him.

‘’Okay, I will do that. For you, for our baby and for us.’’

‘’Thank you.’’ He says standing up and hugging me very tightly. Harrison kinda knows very well how to hug me because it makes me feel really warm when he does.

‘’I am going to postpone the wedding.’’ He says pulling out of the hug and leading me to sit in bed. He is such a sweetheart. ‘’I am going to try all the avenues to prevent it from happening. I want you and I to enjoy our lives. I will be introducing you tomorrow. I will personally come and pick you.’’ I tense when he says that. I don’t want him to know my hiding place.

‘’Um, … it’s okay, Luke can drop me to your home, okay?’’ I am desperately hoping that Luke is still waiting outside and that he will drive me home after this talk.

‘’No! Not him!’’ he looks really handsome when he is jealous.

‘’Why not? Okay,’’ I shrug. ‘’I will take a cab,’’ I say without letting him respond. I know clearly that his reasoning is childish.

‘’Alright, that’s better.’’ I smile when he says that. That family will not allow me to leave their home with a cab. That’s not happening. I will just talk to Luke in advance to give me a ride tomorrow. ‘’Before I forget, please wait a little bit.’’

He stands up and goes out, after a few minutes comes back with a nice gift pack held nicely in his hand. He hands it to me and I hesitate a little before taking it from him, my heart leaps worriedly because I don’t have any idea what’s in it.

‘’Open it, baby.’’ He says his gaze holding mine.

‘’What is it?’’ I ask quietly.

‘’Open it.’’ I do when I realize that he isn’t gonna tell me what’s in the box. I am stunned to find out that it’s my phone. The same phone that I had returned to him. It is nicely packed but I will not be asking him any questions.

‘’Thank you.’’ I don’t want to say no because definitely not to Harrison. He will not buy that and I sort of do need the phone so I accept his gift back.

‘’Welcome. Beautiful,’’ he calls and I nod at him. ‘’Let me come for you tomorrow, okay?’’ I nod. On second thoughts, I will just ask Luke to be on the lookout.

‘’If that will help you sleep at night, then I will let you.’’

‘’That’s my beautiful baby.’’ I blush when he says that.’’

He pulls me again into a hug and before I know it, his lips land on mine and we get to kiss ferociously fiercely. He seems to be so excited and I think he has also missed me a lot.

Just as I have missed him.

I pull back and look at him in the eyes. He looks disappointed and it’s all over his face.

‘’Do you wanna go?’’

‘’Nope, I don’t want to leave you. I have missed your company so much. I just want to stay here with you.’’ He says calmly.

‘’We will be together tomorrow, love. You are coming to pick me up, right?’’

Sure, I will be coming to pick you up. Text me the address.’’ I am about to ask with what phone but the gadget that he just gave to me beeps reminding me that I am no longer phone less and I stretch my hand to have it.

Luke is the one calling and I answer the call without a second thought.

‘’Hey, little brother,’’

‘’Big sister, you’re okay?’’

‘’I am what’s up?’’

‘’We gotta go home. Mum is deadly worried about you. Tell Harry that tomorrow is another day and you could still do whatever shit you doing right now.’’

‘’Where are you?’’ I ask ignoring his statement.

‘’Right outside the apartment where you two are. Come out, I will drive you home.’’

‘’Thanks,’’ I say and terminate the call. Luke is fun, a lot of it and Tabby is truly very lucky to have a sweet boyfriend like him. The two of them are very different but they are really happy and have absolutely no challenges.

I wish them all the best.

‘’Um, Luke is waiting for me outside the gate. We should get going.’’ I tell Harrison who by the look of things isn’t happy with that.

‘’Okay,’’ he says tiredly but without anything else. A tight hug follows and we promise each other that we’ll meet the following day.

Luke is quiet as we cruise the highway to get home. I think he is about to ask me what transpired between Harry and I and I think he has a right to know because we have traveled this journey together. He has always been there.

‘’I am about to take a wild guess.’’ He says calmly and teasingly his eyes straight ahead.

‘’Mh!’’

‘’Harry received the news happily.’’

‘’Right,’’ I say excitedly. ‘’How did you know?’’

‘’You just confirmed. Mine was just a wild gaze but I am happy that you have confirmed the position. He explains.

‘’I am happy for you, big sister. You deserve the best. Is he still going ahead with his mother’s arranged wedding?’’

‘’I smile before responding. ‘’Nope, he is going to call off the wedding. He says the pregnancy news is the best news he has ever received and asked me to be very careful and safe always.’’

‘’Lovely. I like that.’’

‘’Thank you. I hope it will be nulled for sure. I hope he will not end up marrying that witch. By the way, what is written on the card she gave us?’’

‘’Have the card, I didn’t have the audacity to open it because I literally have this feeling that she gave it to us with all her evil mind. I bet she has no idea where her to be husband is and what he is planning to do to her. Poor thing.’’

‘’Really? That’s gonna make me feel guilty. She is about to die, you know? Please don’t say that.’’ he lifts both his hands from the steering wheel and I tense. He puts back his hands immediately.

‘’I won’t be saying that anymore but she has to learn to know how to do things for herself especially finding a hubby. What a cheap way to look for a spouse.’’

‘’Maybe that wasn’t her intention. I bet her mum levied that on her too.’’

‘’I know, right?’’ I roll my eyes at him when he asks that but I am happy that his focus is on the road so, he doesn’t see that.

The card is nicely designed. I smile absently at how well the artwork was done. This shows the commitment but hey, it’s not gonna work. The wedding will not take place.

’Are you sure?’ My innate knows how to ask questions at the wrong time but I know she is right. No one in their right mind would rejoice over such a thing.

‘You evil witch, I will not marry you. I have and want nothing to do with a weakling like you, a naïve confused poor village girl, who is immature and confused. Don’t ever show up in our compound, don’t ever come around here to interfere with my intimacy. I will marry Diana because she is more sophisticated than you are. She is more learned and knows exactly what I want. Not someone like you.’

I am smiling when I finish reading that to Luke. Luke also smiles because we both know that such lies do exist. She is just trying to fit in the community.

Such a malicious way of doing it though.

Everyone is on the table when we get home. We have our dinner and mum promises that she will finish the story after I get a goodnight sleep. I know that story will let me into so much, I can’t wait to hear more.

Emmy wants to go to my bedroom. She says she has to know what happened there but Luke says a big no because he tells her, she has to study first. The rest of the things shall come later. I like the care he cares for her.

Such a caring brother.

‘’What’s the plan?’’ he asks once we are at his bedroom. I just want to spend the night with him today, with all the excitement and all that has happened today, I don’t wanna sleep alone.

‘’You will drive me to that home once again. I am so sorry I bring you to this but you and I know that I have no option other than that.’’

‘’I’ll gladly do it. I am here to support you.’’

‘’Why are you so good to me?’’

‘’Because I love you so much, big sister.’’ I smack him on the shoulder.

Such a joker.

‘’Go to sleep, big girl. I will be here to support you always, I don’t think your boyfriend will keep his promise but I will be there for you, always.’’

‘’Thank you, you know what?’’ he shakes his head. ‘’Alvin said the same and since he disappeared I haven’t seen him in such a long time.’’

‘’Who is Alvin and do you mean I will disappear?’’

‘’Jeez! No, you will not. Regarding Alvin, long story. I am sleepy so, story for another day.’’

‘’Goodnight biggie.‘’

‘’Good night small.’’

I smile despite myself, what a sweet way of finishing my day. I drift into a sweet night's sleep.
