Chapter 29: Chapter 29
I WOKE up at two in the morning feeling hungry. I looked at Adam, who was sleeping beside me.
I silently get up from the bed so as not to wake him up. I put on my slippers and carefully left my room.
I walked straight to the kitchen. I opened the fridge to look for food but found none that I liked.
I was suddenly craving pineapple pie.
"Claire."
I almost jumped in my throat when I heard Adam. I turned my head and saw Adam at the entrance of the kitchen.
"Adam," I said as I slowly walked towards him. "Did I wake you up?"
"Why are you here? Are you feeling hungry?" he asked instead. He ran his fingers through his hair to push it back.
I couldn't help but stare at him. Damn. He looked so handsome, even in his groggy state. His bedroom voice sounded so sexy.
“Claire, are you hungry?" he repeated, staring at my face as if examining my look.
I cleared my throat. “Well... I'm suddenly craving pineapple pie, Adam.”
“Pineapple pie?” he asked, a slight frown visible on his handsome face.
“Yup.” I put my hand on my belly. “I'm hungry and I want pineapple pie.”
Adam pursed his lips. "Do you really want to eat now?"
I pouted my lips and eagerly nodded at him. "Uhuh."
He gave me a gentle smile. "Alright. I'll go and try to look for a pineapple pie outside."
I looked at the wall clock displayed in the kitchen. I pursed my lips when I saw that it was already two in the morning.
"But it's already two in the morning, Adam."
"Well, you said you wanted to eat now, right?" he shrugged and smiled. "We're in the city, Claire. Some restaurants are still open outside. I'll try to look for a pineapple pie, but I won't promise anything, okay?"
"Are you sure, Adam?"
He smiled before pulling me in. I felt him kiss the top of my head. "Yeah. Stay here and wait for me."
"Take care, Adam," I whispered back to him.
"Yeah. Of course, I will."
He already went out after putting on a jacket.
"Your daddy's really kind, baby," I said as I put my hand on my belly. "He's going to look for pineapple pie in the middle of the night for us."
I decided to wait for Adam on the couch. I opened the TV and browsed for a movie.
"He's already thirty minutes out there." I whispered to myself when I glanced at the clock.
When another thirty minutes had passed, I had already started to get worried.
"I wonder where's your daddy now, baby. An hour had already passed." I said as I stood up to get my phone in the room. I sat on the side of the bed and started dialing Adam's number.
I almost jumped in nervousness when I heard a familiar tone ringing. Then I saw Adam's phone on the side table. Adam had left his phone.
I bit my lower lip and went back to the living room.
"Oh, God. What if something happened to him?" I said out loud as I paced back and forth in the living room.
Damn. It was my fault. I shouldn't have let him leave. It was already two in the morning, and Adam was all alone outside.
What if…
I shook my head and tried to stop my brain from thinking morbid thoughts.
In the end, I tried to dial Marcus' number. He answered it after the fifth ring.
"My dear cousin, do you know what time it is?" Marcus' annoying voice greeted me on the other line.
I heaved a sigh. "Yeah. It's three am, Marcus."
"So, why did you have to call and wake me up?" I heard some rustling of the sheets from the other line. "Don't tell me you're giving birth now?"
If I wasn't just nervous today, I already hung up on him. "Marcus, Adam's not home." I bit my lower lip. "I mean… he left more than an hour ago, but he still hasn't come back."
"What?" Now, he sounded alarmed on the other line. "Did you two fight? It means you are alone there in your apartment? What happened, Claire?"
I let out a nervous sigh. "No. We didn't fight, Marcus."
"Then why did he leave in the middle of the night? You're pregnant, Claire!" Now, his voice sounded mad.
"No. It's not what you think, Marcus," I said, trying to explain. "I woke up in the middle of the night craving a pineapple pie, and Adam said he'd go out to buy me one."
"What? You asked your husband to buy you a pineapple pie in the middle of the night?" Now, he sounded as if he was mad at me. Or maybe he's just shocked.
"Well… He volunteered."
"And now you're worried because he hasn't come back yet."
I nodded even though I knew he couldn't see me. "Yeah. It's been more than an hour, Marcus. What if something's happened to him already?"
I heard Marcus' deep breath on the other line. "Have you tried calling him already?"
"He forgot to bring his phone." I shut my eyes for a moment. "I called you because I didn't know what to do, Marcus."
"Try to calm yourself down, Claire," Marcus said on the other line. "It's only been an hour. You can't conclude yet that something bad has happened to him. Maybe he's just circling the whole state to find an open restaurant that serves pineapple pie."
I could already feel the corner of my eyes starting to heat up.
"Well, I no longer want that pineapple pie. I just want him to come back safely." Yes, pineapple pie be damned! I just wanted Adam safe.
"Claire, relax yourself. Do you want me to go there?"
"No. It's okay—" I stopped when I heard the doorbell. My heart leaped in joy. Oh, God. It's Adam. He's already here.
"Claire?"
"Marcus, Adam's here already!" I blurted out in relief.
"See? You're just worrying yourself for nothing." I heard him answer.
I pursed my lips. "I'll hang up. Sorry for the trouble."
"Yeah. You owe me a free lunch on Monday."
"Whatever," I said before finally hanging up. I almost ran myself to the door.
When I finally saw Adam, I couldn't help myself but pull him in a hug.
"Thank God you're already back," I whispered in his chest.
"Oh, wow. You already missed me, Claire?"
I bit my lower lip when I realized what I had done. My cheeks were red when I pulled away from him.
"No. I just thought that something bad happened to you outside. You were gone for more than an hour!" I tried to give him a sharp look to conceal my nervousness.
"Really? I was gone for more than an hour?"
"Yeah. It was already three in the morning."
"I'm sorry, I didn't notice the time. I was busy trying to look for pineapple pie around the city." He then smiled and raised the box he was holding. It was a box of pineapple pie.
Oh, he really did find one.
"Here, Claire."
I tried to swallow the lump in my throat. I suddenly felt very emotional right now. It was the middle of the night, but Adam really made an effort to get me a pineapple pie.
"T-thank you, Adam." I bit my lip to stop my tears from falling.
He gave me a gentle smile. "You're welcome. And I'm sorry I made you worry."
I shook my head as I stared at his face. "No. I'm sorry I asked you to do this. I won't do that again next time."
Adam slightly frowned at me. "You didn't ask me, Claire. I volunteered. And I'll do it again for you and for our baby."
He held my hand. "Come on, let's get inside and eat this pineapple pie."
