Chapter 21: Chapter 21

"COME on. You have to relax, Claire."

Marcus told me while I circled around my office. My heart was beating loudly inside my chest. My hands clammy. I felt nauseous, and I knew it wasn't because of my pregnancy. I was freaking nervous.

"Tell me, Marcus. How could I relax after what I had just witnessed?"

It had been an hour since I witnessed on TV how Adam's motorcycle fell in the middle of the race.

I looked at Marcus, who was just comfortably sitting on the couch. "Well, it already said that he was safe, right?"

I bit my lower lip and sighed. "But they didn't give a complete update." Aside from announcing that Adam was completely out of the competition, the commentator only said that Adam was out of danger and was being taken to the hospital. The broadcast ended without even giving another update about Adam.

"But who knows if he's got broken bones or something. What if there's a serious injury?"

Marcus looked at me. I couldn't quite figure out if his face looked annoyed or worried. "Since when did you become an overthinker?"

I stopped in front of him and gave him a sharp look. "He's the father of my baby, Marcus. Of course, I'd be freaking worried. Besides, he's married to me. That means he's my responsibility."

Marcus raised his brow. "You're really taking this marriage seriously, huh?"

I ignored what he said and just sighed. "Do you really think nothing serious happened to him?"

Marcus pursed his lips. "He's wearing a complete gear, Claire. Accidents like that are common in motocross sports. But if you're really that concerned, try to give him a call."

"Do you think he'll answer? I'm sure he's still in the hospital by now."

"There's nothing wrong with trying."

"You're right." I went behind my desk and took out my phone. I tried calling Adam's number. But my call just went straight to voicemail.

"He's not answering," I told Marcus, who was watching me.

"Give it a rest for now, Claire. We're already sure he's already out of danger anyway." He now looked at me with a concerned expression on his face. "You're pregnant. Stop stressing yourself out. I won't do any good to my nephew."

"Nephew?" I frowned at him.

Marcus slightly grinned at me. "I want your baby to be a boy."

I rolled my eyes at him. "Shut up. This is going to be a girl."

"Well, let's see." Marcus said before he took a glance at his wristwatch. "Come on, we have a meeting with the Swedish investors at 2 pm."

"Oh, right." I placed my hand on my forehead. I almost forgot about our meeting with one of the possible investors in the company.

I looked at my watch. It was thirty minutes before two pm. "Just give me a minute to prepare my things."

"Alright." Adam answered as he stood up from his seat. "I'll go back to my office first to grab my things. I'll fetch you here. Let's go together to the boardroom."

I nodded at Marcus. As soon as Marcus left my office, I readied myself for the meeting.

I took a deep breath as I straightened out my skirt. Together with my laptop, I went out with my office when Marcus came back to fetch me.

Everyone was already in the boardroom when Marcus and I entered it. We both took the vacant seat intended for us. On my left was Marcus and on my right was the Operations Manager.

"Let's start the meeting, ladies and gentlemen."

The president of the company announced after he introduced the two Swedish investors to the board.

"You okay, Claire?" Marcus asked me when he handed me the paper that was passed on by the president's secretary.

"Yeah," I answered, without looking at him. But the truth was, I couldn't concentrate on this meeting. I couldn't even comprehend a single thing that those Swedish investors had been saying.

My mind was still occupied with Adam's accident.

I hope he's really safe out there. I told myself as I tried to take a peek at my phone in my coat's pocket.

"Claire?"

I looked around when I heard my voice. I found out that almost half of the people in the boardroom had their eyes on me.

I cleared my throat. "Yes, gentlemen?"

"I was asking you what are your insights about the presentation." The Vice-President for Operations asked me. I didn't realize he was now the one standing in front of us.

I cleared my throat. Presentation? "Uh…"

"I'm sorry Mr. Green," I heard Marcus say beside me. "Claire was not in the right headspace right now. She had an emergency, and I suggest we exclude her from the meeting for now."

I turned to Marcus, who just gave me a small nod. I took that opportunity to excuse myself from the meeting.

"Ma'am, is the meeting done?" my secretary asked me when I got back to my office.

I gave her a small smile. "No. I just excuse myself."

I bit my lower lip. This was the first time I got distracted in the middle of a meeting. But it was better to leave the meeting like this than to stay there without comprehending anything.

I was drinking water when my cell phone rang. I immediately picked it up. My eyes widened when I saw who was calling.

"Adam!" I said immediately on the other line.

"Hi," came his reply. "I saw your missed calls on my phone."

I bit my lower lip. My heart was beating loudly inside my chest. "Yeah. I'd seen what happened to you. Please, tell me you're okay?"

"You have nothing to worry about, Claire. I'm perfectly fine." He answered on the other line.

I felt like something heavy had gotten off my chest. "Are you sure?" I probed.

"Yeah." he confirmed. "But I'm here in the hospital to get myself checked."

"Oh. Thank God." I let out a loud sigh of relief. I was sure Adam heard that.

"Did I make you worry?" he asked.

I bit my lower lip. "A bit," I answered.

A bit, Claire? When you leave the important board meeting because you're too distracted?

"I'm sorry for making you worry." he said in a gentle tone.

I pursed my lips. "It's okay. What's important is that you're safe."

"Yeah." He breathed. "Hmm, I'll end the call now. I'm sure I'm disturbing you at work."

I chewed on my lower lip. I didn't want to drop the call yet, but I was sure he's also busy. "Alright. Bye, Adam."

"I'll call you later, Claire."

I let out another sigh of relief when I put down my phone.
