Chapter 15: Chapter 15

This was the fourth time she called her father, and he did not pick neither did he return the calls nor send a text. She dialed his number again, and it went into a voice mail again.

"Hi to anyone calling, I'm busy and I'll return your calls later, thank you."

Frustrated, she dropped her phone on the kitchen counter with a thud, but her mother had managed to pick her phone, just to tell her she would call back in the next two hours. This made her to lose her patience, as her call was three hours ago, and her mother hadn't called back as promised. In vain, she waited for her father to return her call. She was curious to know who this Elena Martins was.

They had only told her the story once or twice, when she was just nine years old, and grandpa brought her and her older brother Justin to the cabin. With furzy remembrance, she knew not if she could recognize those people anymore.

Her memory was bad when it came to remembering things. Standing up from the stool, she poured herself a glass of water to drink and let out a frustrated sigh. Leaning on the kitchen counter she ran fingers through her hair.

Then she picked up her phone and dialed her brother's number, he should know something, she muttered to herself.

He picked up on the second ring.

"Hey teddy bear," he cooed on the phone.

"Big brother," she squealed happily.

"How are you, its been awhile, your parents dumped you again?" he said sarcasm laced his voice.

"I'm fine thank you, and you? Well our parents did dump me as usual, I'm at grandfather's cabin with my friends."

"Okay, seriously, how's is it going over there? You guys should have lots of fun though," his daughter diverted his attention, holding the phone away from his ears "Mila will you stop messing with your food or you just leave it?" He scolded.

"No daddy, take it away," the two year old, said. Wiping her hands on the napkin.

"Hey I'm here, he said into the receiver. Do you know any Elena Martins?"

"Yeah, she was our cousin, who died drowning twelve years ago, and her body was never found. I think." "You were just eight years old though. I think not you knew her, but she knew you though."

“I was mine Justin”

“Oops, sorry young lady,” he replied.

Danielle heaved a sigh, "Tell me what you know about her Justin."

"Why do you want to know," he asked.

Eh! She scratched her head, thinking of what lie to tell!

"Ohm, I came across a family picture, you were in it, but I wasn't, you were all little," she said blinking her eyes. It was true she came across a picture, but it was just Elena and her parents.

"Well she was our cousin, her mother was aunty Imelda and her dad was Jared, and was the only child. But I knew not what happened to that family, they all drowned. The story was unclear to me, and grandma died with them.

I presumed, “They were evil, the reason grandfather is in the care center," that's what your mother said as a matter of fact.

Rolling her eyes, she replied him, "Our mother."

"You could call mum and dad again, they should be out of the meeting by now," he added.

"I got to go, Mila's making a huge mess, and Melanie is on the morning shift, I will talk to you later, love u little sis," and he hung up.

Holding her phone to her chest "I love you big brother." And promised him to call her parents later.

She headed to her room, opening the door and quickly shut it, having heard the sound of water running, she thought he must be in the shower, she quickly undressed and entered the bathroom. Her boyfriend Ezekiel stood under the shower, the water sliding down his body smoothly like an ice skate. In her awe, she admired his body. God he's beautiful.

The day went by quickly and Ivan felt bored in the house, so he went outside the cabin to take in some fresh air, moving away from the cabin out of sight, he took the narrow path leading to where he got lost before. It was a different path from the one leading to the lake. His mind wandered around, standing afar off, he observed the cabin, and nothing seemed unusual. Waiting for few minutes he hoped to see something happened, but nothing happened.

He recalled reading in a book that "When a person expects something to happen, nothing ever happens," he heaved a sigh. With his hands on his waist, he walked further away from the cabin.

Sighting some flowers, he admired them, they were beautiful, whispering a sound, and he plucked a purple hibiscus, and sniffed it smiling.

He realized not he had walked for hours, until the clouds formed another colour. Seeing the cloud he walked back towards where he came, but after a long walk he found not his way. Loosing sense of direction he returned to the same place he plucked the hibiscus flower. He was sure he knew the road he came through. Was the forest playing tricks on him, or what had happened? Ivan was terrified.

He brought out his phone from his back pocket, hoping he would contact his friends, when he used the phone there was no signal, and it frustrated him. He walked around searching for signal but he found none! Ivan got more frustrated, and his predicament terrified him.
