Chapter 42: Chapter 42

Lola's POV

There was an absolute silence that filled the atmosphere as we both sat down right there across the boundary. Blake seemed lost as his face got buried in his palm. All I could hear was his heavy breath and a silent grunt.

I had a lot of questions to ask him, but I already know he has no answer to them and must be contemplating it now. It wasn't about taking me away right now; it was about where I would go next. No one ever thought of a moment like this while speeding away from my pack.

We had succeeded in escaping the ambush of the pack hunters. Yes, we left before they came, but does it all make sense? I am not safe here either. As much as I wanted to know what step Blake would take next, I still knew he couldn't do much. This must be why he is lost in thought here and now.

"They are coming..." His deep and caring voice spoke out all of a sudden while he pulled his head up quickly, spinning his full gaze at me.

My eyes widened in shock while I flinched in fright, knowing instantly what he meant. The vampire clan hunters are coming. They had smelt my scent, which was against the vampire community and would always trigger alertness.

"The hunters are coming. What... what... should I do now? Should I run back to my pack? Maybe they will have a bit of mercy and let me live again" I muffled, sniffing my tears as my eyes brimmed with tears, making my vision blurred.

I was literally shaking in horror at the moment, wondering what to do. Vampires are vicious and coldhearted, I am not safe! And the fact that Blake looked hopeless made my heart clench so hard it felt like it would burst open soon.

"You are not going anywhere. Your pack will kill you at first glance, I am sure of that!" He sighed and took my trembling palms into his.

The warmth spread from my palm to my entire body. His green pair of eyes were peering into mine as he blinked and gave me a reassuring smile.

"You saved me from your pack hunters. I will save you from mine too. Just know this: anything I do or say doesn't matter. I am doing it all to save you. My love for you can never be reduced a bit. I'd rather die than watch you being killed. This is the first promise I ever made to a lady and my life is bound to it."

Those words came out of his lips slowly and gently but with a strong aura and tone. His eyes were wet already, glistening like the river under the bright moon. Those stormy eyes were calm and beautiful as he talked to me with all the sincerity a tone could have.

I couldn't tell when I smiled.

"You will be my personal slave. Yes, my mother has no idea you have broken the spell. I have to treat you harsh...I...."

His voice seized at that instant, and those smiles vanished, replaced with a stern expression and a distant look.

At that moment, he rose and grabbed my hair, not minding my screech as pain struck in again. The wounds from Torian's tortures were yet to heal.

"Blake, why..." I clamped my lips immediately as twenty hefty men bolted with a speed that matched the wind as their strong and reeking vampire smell hit my nostrils.

Blake released his grip on my hair after hearing my scream of pain, but he quickly clutched the top part of my dress.

"My prince, permit us to end her life instantly. We are deeply sorry for arriving late, which made you pick up the task meant for us. Please punish us after we shred her body into tiny pieces and offer her heart to you." I heard one of them say, forcing a rush of shivers to run through me. Those words were brutal, but he was saying them like they were nothing.

"I knew you all wouldn't find her so quickly because she was good at hiding her scent, but I guess she underestimated my abilities." Blake responded with a short laugh, and that made me raise my head to look at the men who had already gathered around me.

My heart began thumping so hard inside my chest with panic coursing through me like a wave.

The vampires around me were horrifying figures, and the way they glared at me in rage and disgust revealed a lot about how much werewolves were reviled in this town.

The thick red blood pouring down their mouths and chunks of flesh which stuck in between their fangs made them look like monsters as they grunted in craving desire to devour me. That was all that seemed to be all they badly wanted and must be waiting for an order from Blake so as to end my life.

With their heavy muscles bulging out of their cloak, I knew I had no chance, and if these were just hunters, I shudder to think what their warriors would be like. Now I can tell you that our pack stands no match against them. We are just lucky to be populated, which was the only advantage. My neck was already aching from raising it in the air just to see the faces of these tall giants surrounding me.

"Pardon our incompetency. We will surely train harder. You can leave; let us treat her like the others who have stepped their feet here." The one that had seemed to be the leader who had spoken out the first time added again, and this time, they all drew closer, smirking at me evilly.

"It's fine... I don't blame any of you for not coming earlier, but I don't think I want her dead already. At least not now. Don't you think it will be an easy escape? She deserves more than that." Blake let out a malicious grin, his countenance full of smug as he turned to me.

They all glanced at each other confusedly before turning back at us.

"What do you want to do with her, prince? Wolves are meant to be killed instantly. That's the rule." They all chorused in curiosity and surprise, squeezing their faces as they sneered at Blake.

I was clenching my teeth and holding my breath as I struggled to push back the terror building in me while I wondered what Blake would reply. This was so scary and the biggest risk one would ever take. Would Blake go this far just to save my life? I can already see the suspicious looks on the faces of the men each time they stare at him.

"That's her!" One of them with red hair suddenly yelled out, pointing straight at me as his eyes turned red and bloodshot. He became so mad and was panting.

Now this is so confusing. Where and how does he know me?

"What are you saying?" The hunter's leader asked, while others stared at the 6 foot man with a huge scar smearing along his cheek.

"She is the girl that made our prince fall in love with her, so to lure him and get him killed. Remember when our queen mentioned that necklace pendant around her neck? Look, it's the same. She is the girl he gave the pendant!" He shouted, and I could see a little fear in Blake's eyes as he darted his stare sharply at me.

He lowered his gaze to the pendant and hastily pluck it off, but it was already too late. They already saw it.

"Kill her!" The leader ordered in a loud tone, causing me to shake and cling to Blake, who was my only hope of survival.

"Make way for us, prince. You can't fall in love with a werewolf! Remember what they did to us? Remember, they killed your sister! Her pack hunters killed her! Have you forgotten so soon?" The leader thundered, and I felt a cold sensation run down my spine on hearing the last statement.

My pack hunters killed Blake's sister?

My arms were around Blake as I hid behind him, my face resting on his back as I sobbed in panic and heartbreak. I could strangely feel the pain he was experiencing inside his heart now. It must have hurt so much to have your sister killed. I really don't deserve his care with the fact that I am also a pack hunter and it was crystal clear that my parents must be among those that killed her.

"Blake, I am so sorry. It hurts, and I don't deserve you! I don't deserve your protection. It is a risk to stand by me now. They already know who I am to you. Just let me die if that is the only way you can be free without trouble. Defending me will put you in a lot of problem" I whimpered, feeling sadness cloud my heart.

"Blake, please make way for us. This time, we are following your mother's order. She commanded us to take her life as she is a threat to our clan. " The leader added impatiently, as they were all forcing themselves not to attack me while I was still clinging to Blake.

There was silence now.

The hunters were about 25 now, closing up on us while I panted and shook vehemently. Death is scary and I don't want to face it. I badly want to be with Blake, at least for a day, but the possibility is bleak and hopeless.

Blake has also been silent. There was no need to have any hope. He can't fight against his clan just for me. The mistake had been made; they saw the necklace pendant.

"Why are you lingering? Do you want to fight us because of her?" The red-haired vampire who saw the necklace threw the question, and I felt Blake's body shudder a bit over my hug.

"I will be leaving you to fight them. Thanks for everything," I mumbled and was about to unlock my palm, but he held it back and rewrapped it.

"You broke the rules and saved me that day. I am doing the same now!" His deep voice growled, laced with protection and possession.

"Come get her if you can!" He snarled at them before helping me sit right behind him.

Oh God, I couldn't just believe my ears. I couldn't believe my eyes when he shifted not to devour me, but to fight against his own people just to preserve my life.
