Chapter 134: Chapter 134

As Megan sat in the garden, her legs crossed and a cigarette dangling from her mouth, she dialed a number on her phone. The receiver picked up immediately, and she demanded, "What did I tell you earlier? Didn't I tell you to always keep me updated on what's going on?"

The man on the other end groaned in frustration. "What am I supposed to update you on, woman? Can't you just let me do my job in peace?"

Megan's eyes narrowed as she took a long drag on her cigarette. "Watch how you speak to me," she said coldly. "I'm paying you, and I expect results."

The man sighed. "Fine. You told me Elena usually leaves work by 6 p.m. It's already 6. She's out."

Megan's eyes flickered with excitement. "Great," she said, her voice dripping with malice.

As Elena walked out of her workplace, oblivious to the danger lurking nearby, Megan spoke into her phone again. "Go get her."

The truck driver started his engine slowly, careful not to alarm Elena as he moved in closer. When the time was right, he stepped on the gas, and the truck surged forward with a menacing growl.

As Elena's phone rang in her bag, she pulled it out and saw Jacob's name flashing on the screen. She answered, but the connection was poor, and all she could make out was Jacob's muffled voice. Just as she turned around to get a better signal, a massive red truck barreled towards her. Time seemed to slow down as she watched it approach, her heart racing in her chest.

But before it was too late, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, and they both rolled onto the other side of the road. Elena's eyes snapped open to find Jacob's worried face inches from hers. He was covered in dirt and blood; his arm gashed open.

As she stared at him in shock, Jacob's grip on her waist tightened. "Are you okay?" he whispered urgently.

Elena shook her head, still disbelieving what had just happened. She hugged him tightly, her body trembling with fear. When she pulled back, she gasped at the sight of his wounded arm.

"Oh no, Jacob!" she exclaimed, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.

Jacob winced as she tore off his sleeve to examine his wound. Blood oozed out, staining his shirt crimson.

"We need to get you to the hospital," Elena said firmly, trying to hide her own panic.

As they made their way through the deserted streets, Jacob couldn't help but think about how close they had come to disaster. He glanced down at Elena's pale face and felt a pang of guilt for not being able to protect her sooner. What would have happened if he'd been a second late?

He pulled her close, trying to reassure her with his words and actions. "It's okay, Lena," he whispered into her ear. "You're safe now. I won't let anything happen to you again." Jacob has her forehead kissed.

"What are you saying?" Elena asked, her voice laced with confusion.

And why are you acting strange? You don't need to pretend there's no one here," Lena replied, her tone firm but gentle.

Lena quit the act; I'm sure you know by now how I truly feel about you," Jacob said, his eyes locked on hers. "These past few weeks have been the best moments of my life because you were a part of it. Your unique personality and how you manage to spread joy and happiness wherever you step in made me even more attracted to you."

Lena's face was already soaked with tears as Jacob kneeled before her. His words tumbled out in a rush: "Can I be the most important part of your life? Will you marry me and make me the happiest man on Earth?"

Elena's gaze lingered on his face, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "You're crazy," she said, her voice trembling. Despite being injured, he was still thinking about love.

"Lena, please stop crying," Jacob implored, his voice filled with desperation. "I don't want to be the reason you cry now or in the future. Your words of affirmation are enough to heal this wound."

Elena shook her head, her tears spilling over. "Just stop it already and let's get your arm treated first, then we can talk about this."

" Promise?"

Elena nodded, and Jacob finally agreed to follow her back to the hospital. After he got treated, she dressed the wound on his arm.

As they were leaving the clinic, Elena overheard the nurses' conversation. "Who is that handsome chap with Nurse Elena?" one of the nurses asked.

"What kind of silly question is that?" the other replied, rolling her eyes. "It's obviously her boyfriend."

"Geez, he's so handsome. His dimples whenever he smiles make my knees go weak completely," one of the nurses said.

"I'd advise you to back off," another nurse said. "Can't you see he's crazy in love with her? The way he stares at her face and watches every move she makes is like he's in a world where it's just the two of them."

The more they talked, Elena felt extremely embarrassed, knowing Jacob could also hear them. She quickened her pace, and Jacob quickly followed.

"Why are you running away?" he asked. "You already promised to talk about it as soon as I got my arm treated."

Elena sighed loudly and turned around to face him. "Look, Jacob, I really don't know," she said. "I feel like everything is moving too fast, and it's all new for me."

"I really mean every single word I said," Jacob replied. "I really love you, and I want to keep you safe with me forever. Just give me a chance, please."

"Let's see how it goes," Elena said. "I don't know about marrying you now, but maybe in the future."

"Then will you be my girlfriend?" Jacob asked.

Elena nodded immediately, and he kissed her deeply. "That's more like it," he said with a smirk, satisfied by the embarrassed look on her face.

"You're injured; allow me to drive you home," Elena said as Jacob walked towards the driver's seat. To her surprise, he didn't hesitate or refuse.

.......

Meanwhile, back at Trevor's house, Megan was extremely worried when the network suddenly went bad and the call was cut off. She tried calling back, but the line was switched off.

She didn't know whether to celebrate Elena's death or worry about herself. Megan felt that the best solution was for her to hide out at a hotel until she got in touch with the driver.

What if he'd been caught? Had he succeeded in killing that woman? Did he trick me and take my money, or maybe he turned off his phone for security reasons, but he should have told me?" She bit her finger and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration.

After pacing back and forth in the bedroom, pondering what step to take next, she went into her closet and picked out some clothes to put into her suitcase, prepared to leave the house. Luckily, her mom, dad, and Carmen weren't around, and she saw it as the best opportunity to run away.

She had just put her belongings inside the trunk of the car when a police vehicle drove straight into the compound and stopped in front of her.

"You must be Megan Trevor," a police officer said. "We're from BAZ station, and we have an arrest warrant for you." A piece of paper was shoved in front of her face.

Megan's expression darkened. "An arrest warrant? What did I do?"

"Please advise that you come with us. No questions until we get to the station." Two officers came forward and handcuffed Megan, taking her into the police van.

At the same time, Jacob was saving Elena, and Sean had already caught the truck driver and called the police on him. He was currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation. All kinds of torture had been delivered to him while they were trying to get his confession to the crime. Luckily, his phone gave away the person who had hired him for the job.

The truck driver had already been arrested when Megan was brought to the police station. There was much evidence against her, and she was locked up immediately, with no bail granted, waiting for the day of her court hearing.

The truck driver later confessed to his crimes, and the police retrieved recorded audio of their conversation. When he was asked about it, he told them that after carrying out the job, he wanted to use the recording to blackmail Megan into giving him a huge amount of money.

The TRO (temporary restraining order) Elena filed against her was another proof.

When Mr. and Mrs. Trevor heard what their only daughter had done, they felt utterly ashamed of themselves. The news was already spreading like wildfire. Their stay in New York was barely a month old, and they were already making headlines within the socialites' circle.

Their daughter couldn't find a suitor before the incident, and now they were certain she wouldn't find one in the near future when someone learned about the despicable thing she had done.

They even prayed she wouldn't be sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted murder. Carmen had to visit Megan under the pressure of Mr. and Mrs. Trevor.

"Someone is here to see you," the female warden said. Megan, who was seated on the cold ground of the cell with her arms wrapped around her knees, sobbed loudly, raised her head, and saw Carmen.

She ran over to her. "Carmen, thank goodness you're here! Quickly, get me out of here. There are so many mosquitoes here, and it stinks so badly," Megan choked on her words.

"I'm sorry, Megan, but I can't get you out of here. You tried to kill someone, and you were charged with attempted murder, which is a very serious crime. They have enough evidence against you. There is no one or two pieces of evidence but more, and as a result, bail cannot be granted to you," Carmen explained.

"So... what now? You're just going to let me rot in here by myself? You're my only cousin; you need to help me get out of here!" Megan demanded.

"I'm really sorry, Megan. I wish I could help, but I'm not in a position to do so. You'll just have to wait for your court hearing," Carmen replied.

"Then you'll help me get out, right? You'll take my case and make sure I'm out of here, won't you? You're now a big lawyer, and I can count on you," Megan asked again.

"I'm sorry, but I'm not taking your case. If I do, it would ruin my reputation as a lawyer that took years of hard work to build," Carmen said.

"Really? Your stupid career is more important than your own cousin? F**k you, bitch! You're selfish and greedy, and I'm glad Sean Wilson didn't end up with a slut like you. You know what? I don't need your help. Just get out!" Megan yelled at the top of her voice, hoping it would bring down the whole place.

Carmen sneered loudly. "I'm glad you ended up this way. I hope you learn if you survive this one." She then turned around and walked out of the cell without looking back, leaving Megan to continue raining curses on her cousin.
