Chapter 136: Chapter 136
"..." I was speechless.
Fortunately, he didn’t do that. Otherwise, I would never have the face to see Calvin Yance at the company again.
Unless I found a new professional manager.
Thinking about this, I regretfully muttered, "I shouldn’t have told you. It’s not like it’s so coincidental that I’ll run into your friends again, and you wouldn’t know anyway..."
"I said I finally found a flaw in you — petty and jealous!" I turned my head to look at him, deliberately enunciating clearly to annoy him.
But he laughed instead of getting angry, generously saying, "I have many flaws. You’ll discover them in time."
"Why don’t you just tell me directly, so I can avoid them?"
Our childish bickering got to a point where even we couldn’t listen anymore.
"Alright, let me take you home. Tomorrow morning we can go look at cars, and then I’ll take you to the company," Daniel Carter changed the subject while arranging my itinerary for the next day.
I agreed to this over the phone before, so I didn’t change my mind now.
On the way, Daniel Carter reminded me again that the day after tomorrow is Saturday.
I was stunned for a moment before realizing—
This weekend I have to go to Carter Manor to visit Old Master Carter.
"Yeah, I remember. Has the old man recovered a bit? Will my visit disturb his rest?" In fact, I still felt a little resistant, so I was trying to find an excuse.
"He’s doing much better, and it won’t disturb him. He really enjoys being around the younger generation and is keen on learning new things."
I nodded, understanding, "The old man refuses to admit he’s old."
I felt even more anxious but couldn’t find a reason to refuse anymore.
Daniel Carter dropped me off downstairs, and I didn’t let him come upstairs.
It was already past ten, and it would take him another hour to get back to the manor — too late.
I was already getting out of the car when he pulled me back inside, leaned in to give me a kiss, and smiled goodnight.
I rolled my eyes at him playfully, shut the car door, and jogged to the entrance.
Entering the elevator, I found myself alone.
The silence allowed those chaotic thoughts to swarm around me like flies, refusing to leave my mind.
Just the thought of my wretched father coming out again filled me with endless hate.
If I weren’t with Daniel Carter, I might just go all out, confront them head-on, no matter what the outcome.
But now, as his girlfriend, I couldn’t act recklessly.
I feared that my issues would be magnified by outsiders, turning it into a public scandal that might drag Daniel Carter down.
I pondered deeply, contemplating how to deal with these flies, mosquitoes, and vampires.
With a "ding," the elevator reached my floor, and the doors opened.
As I stepped out, I spotted a figure in the hallway.
I looked closely, and my already irritated mood worsened.
"What are you doing here again? You’re not welcome," I said, glaring coldly at Adrian Gordon in the wheelchair.
His attitude towards me wasn’t pleasant either, sarcastically saying, "A day as husband and wife means a hundred days of grace. Isn’t it only natural I come to see my ex-wife?"
He actually had the gall to say something so shameless.
But since I saw him, I remembered something important.
"That villa hasn’t been transferred yet. Let’s find a day to go to the Civic Center and handle it."
I had meant to discuss this during the court case with Amanda Gordon.
He didn’t accompany his sister to the trial.
I assumed it was because his health was too poor, preventing him from going. But now he could show up at my doorstep, so he wasn’t as sick as I thought. Check latest chapters at NoveI~Fire.net
"The transfer can wait. Let’s talk about Amanda first. You conceded in court, saying if she apologized, you’d accept an out-of-court settlement. Does that still stand?"
I frowned, staring at him—
"You’re this sick, and yet you braved the cold night to ask me this?"
"What else? You blacklisted my number, and even with a new one, you won’t answer," he accused lightly with sarcasm, "as if picking up my call would kill you."
I was taken aback, suddenly recalling I’d indeed received two missed calls from unknown numbers during the day, which I muted.
"Does it still stand?" he asked again.
I took a deep breath — honestly, I didn’t want it to.
Because Amanda Gordon’s demeanor in court had really upset me.
But with my wretched father about to be released, who knows what kind of trouble he’d stir up next.
To avoid being overwhelmed with issues that might disrupt my fashion week show, I decided to let her go.
"Alright, have her apologize publicly, and I’ll accept the settlement," I agreed but reminded, "Though my lawyer says at this stage, an out-of-court settlement might not work as well."
Adrian Gordon replied, "As long as you issue a statement of forgiveness, I’ll handle the rest."
Ah, looks like he found someone with more influence now.
I nodded, "Alright, so be it."
With that said, I turned towards the door, ready to go inside.
But Adrian Gordon didn’t seem like he was leaving.
He turned his wheelchair to face me, "Lily Miller, are you happier with Daniel Carter than you were with me?"
I had unlocked the door and pulled it open. Upon hearing this, I turned back to face him.
"What do you think? Isn’t it obvious?" I smiled, stating the facts, "He’s wealthier, from a better family, more competent, and even more gentle and considerate, not to mention — healthier and stronger than you."
Each point I made darkened his expression further.
"Why ask such questions to humiliate yourself?"
Adrian’s hands tightly gripped the wheelchair’s armrests, his knuckles turning pale from exertion.
We stood in silence for a few seconds, just as I was entering and about to shut the door when he asked, "Have you met General Carter Senior? Did he agree with you two being together?"
I turned back, one hand on the door, and smiled, "In a couple of days, I’ll visit on the weekend."
With those words, I closed the door, shutting out his world.
Perhaps Daniel was right; this place isn’t livable. It’s time to move again.
But I don’t want to move to his luxurious villa, so I guess I’ll have to wait until after New Year to look for houses.
Hopefully, I can buy a furnished small apartment and move in right away.
And definitely, I won’t let any of these chaotic people know about the new place, so I can have a peaceful home.
Standing behind the door, I peered through the peephole and saw Adrian Gordon brooding in silence for a moment before turning his wheelchair and entering the elevator.
I relaxed and returned to the sofa.
What did Adrian mean by mentioning General Carter Senior?
It sounded like he thought Old Master Carter wouldn’t accept me.
I contemplated for a moment but couldn’t figure it out, so I decided to leave it aside and head to bed.
Daniel Carter brought me breakfast again and came downstairs to pick me up.
We went to the Maserati dealership.
The president for the Greater China region personally received us and enthusiastically introduced various models.
I don’t know much about cars; at most, I have some requirements for the models and interiors. As for the mechanical and functional aspects, that was up to Daniel Carter to discuss.
While we were still there, Cherry called.
"Sister Yan, Lady Turner is looking for you."
I said calmly, "Ignore her. Just tell her I’m busy today, won’t return to the office, and she should leave."
"But she refuses to leave and is sitting in your office. Should I get security to kick her out?"
"No need, just let her sit there." I was afraid even the security couldn’t handle Shirley Turner, and if things got out of hand, it would affect the normal operations of the company.
"Alright then..." Cherry sighed and hung up.
I didn’t let it bother me too much. Shirley Turner only seeks me out for money, nothing else.
I won’t give her money, or it would never end.
As I held my phone and turned around, who would have thought I would run into a familiar face—no, an enemy!
Jessica Sawyer was linking arms with an older woman who looked quite similar; it was probably her mother.
Two sharply-dressed car salespeople were enthusiastically conversing with them.
It seemed they were also there to buy a car.
Just didn’t expect such a coincidence.
"Lily Miller?" Jessica Sawyer looked startled upon seeing me.
The older woman next to her asked, "Your friend?"
Jessica Sawyer leaned over and whispered something to her, and the wealthy lady’s expression towards me immediately changed.
"Just good-looking, nothing special," she commented openly and without tact.
I chuckled lightly and retorted, "Pity some people have to resort to fake appearances to even reach ’just good-looking’, and still aren’t anything special."
"You—" Jessica Sawyer looked like her eyes were about to pop out.
"Why so aggressive? I didn’t even say it was you, unless you’re guilty by association."
After rudely responding to her, I was ready to walk away.
But who knew she’d be wicked enough to stretch her foot out as I passed by.
I was alarmed, thinking to myself, do today’s socialites have no limits?
Without hesitation, I kicked her foot directly.
"Ah!" Jessica Sawyer cried out in pain, bending over and clutching her calf.
"Oh, I’m sorry... I was walking just fine, how did something trip me up so suddenly?" I immediately apologized, genuinely reaching out towards Jessica Sawyer, intending to help her up.
"Don’t touch me!" Jessica Sawyer shouted as her face turned red with pain.
You couldn’t really blame her for being afraid of pain; I was wearing a pair of real leather ankle boots today, with firm toes and soles.
She was in a long dress with delicate skin; just one hit must have been excruciatingly painful.
"Lily Miller, why are you so smug! Your family is ruined, and yet you’re so arrogant, thinking just because you’re nestled with the Carter Family you’re untouchable?"
I stood still, with a cold expression, looking at her without speaking as a familiar voice came from behind me: "Lily, what’s going on?"
Jessica Sawyer quickly looked up, seeing Daniel Carter approaching us, her expression first surprised, then anxious.
"Brother Daniel, what are you doing here?" After asking, she realized, adding, "You are... here with her to buy a car."
Daniel Carter stood beside me, barely glancing at Jessica Sawyer, but instead focused on the wealthy lady: "Hello, Mrs. Sawyer."
So it was indeed Jessica Sawyer’s mother.
No wonder their aggressive and overbearing demeanor was identical.
However, Daniel Carter’s formal address of "Mrs. Sawyer" indicated their relationship wasn’t close.
But if they weren’t close, then where did Jessica Sawyer’s "Brother Daniel" come from?
"Hello, Young Master Carter." Mrs. Sawyer nodded at Daniel Carter, her tone polite and respectful.
But the next moment, her gaze shifted to me, and with outright rudeness, she said, "Is this Miss Miller a friend of Young Master Carter? A girl from such a small family, without any breeding, is worlds apart from the Carter Family. Old Master Carter always—"
"Mrs. Sawyer, Lily Miller is my girlfriend, and she’s not related to you in any way. Regardless, it’s not your place to lecture her."
Daniel Carter still wore a pleasant expression but directly interrupted Mrs. Sawyer, seriously reminding her.
I raised an eyebrow slightly, not expecting him to be so "rude" as to interrupt an elder’s words.
Mrs. Sawyer’s expression immediately turned sour.
"Brother Daniel, my mom means well. See how brazen Lily Miller is; she kicked my leg until it turned blue." Jessica Sawyer quickly defended her mother, even lifting her skirt to show her calf.
Just as I was about to explain to Daniel Carter, he replied first, "Lily wouldn’t harm someone without reason. Miss Sawyer, did you stretch your leg out first?"
I couldn’t help it; I almost burst out laughing.
"I... isn’t it alright to stretch on such a wide path? She kicked right into me; how evil-spirited can she be!" Jessica Sawyer’s face was flushed with guilty embarrassment, yet she continued to argue.
I didn’t want to say anything more.
With Daniel Carter having such trust in me, why waste words? Just enjoy the show.
Sure enough, Daniel Carter looked at Mrs. Sawyer, remaining polite in demeanor, but his words carried an undertone of mockery: "Mrs. Sawyer, the Sawyer Family might be grand, but the upbringing of its children doesn’t match the status. Old Master Sawyer would surely be a bit heartbroken if he knew."
My ears perked up; who was this now? Jessica Sawyer’s grandfather?
Despite everything, Mrs. Sawyer still valued face, and being mocked by Daniel Carter like that made her look very embarrassed.
Jessica Sawyer wanted to speak, but Mrs. Sawyer stealthily pinched her hard, then looked at Daniel Carter with a forced smile: "Young Master Carter is right. Jessica was indeed a bit rude today; I will discipline her well afterward."
"Thank you, Mrs. Sawyer." Daniel Carter slightly nodded, wrapped his arm around me, and turned, "Let’s go; the car deal is settled. You should decide on the color and interior."
I mumbled, "I’m fine with anything. You decide."
"You’re the one driving, so you should decide."
We returned to the previous VIP room, and on the way, I felt as if two lasers were targeting my back.
Without having to look back, I could guess how colorful Jessica Sawyer’s face was at the moment.
But I didn’t feel much joy in defeating her verbally, instead, I was curious about the relationship between the Sawyer Family and Old Master Carter, pondering how to ask Daniel Carter about it.
We finalized the car deal, and Daniel Carter paid the deposit, sealing the arrangement.
As we left, I didn’t see Jessica Sawyer again.
Guessing by the unpleasantness, she probably didn’t bother looking at cars anymore.
Getting into the car, Daniel Carter asked if we should wait and have lunch before returning to the company, or head back now.
Thinking about the end-of-year rush, both he and I busy, I decided to return now.
Shirley Turner was still guarding my office. If I didn’t go back and handle it, she might lose her temper and set my office on fire.
On the way back to the company, I kept mulling over how to start the conversation.
Daniel Carter noticed I wasn’t speaking, glanced at me a few times before asking, "What’s wrong, why the gloomy face?"
I turned to look at him, deciding to get straight to the point: "What’s your relationship with Jessica Sawyer that she calls you Brother Daniel so intimately?"
