Chapter 135: Chapter 135
I know this aunt is very superstitious and has altars for various gods at home all year round, so I deliberately used these words to scare her.
Anyway, I don’t believe in this stuff, so I’m not afraid of her using it against me.
Sure enough, when I said that, Evelyn Miller stuttered in anger, "Lily Miller, you... you really are—no wonder Shirley Turner says you are heartless, with a heart of a snake and scorpion."
"Well, you all have good hearts, reincarnations of the Goddess, so you take good care of him, consider it a good deed."
I followed along with my aunt’s words, leaving her speechless in anger. ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ N0veI.Fiɾe.net
The lawyer hadn’t left and, upon hearing my conversation, even as an outsider, he felt sympathetic towards me.
"President Miller, it seems your troubles have come again."
I smiled bitterly, "Who says they haven’t?"
Thinking about the lawsuit with Amanda Gordon not yet concluded, and Jason Miller wanting medical parole again, my life is truly full of ups and downs and challenges.
As I left work, Daniel Carter called, asking what I wanted for dinner.
I was in a bad mood, just wanting to go home, lie down, and rest, so I replied flatly, "I’m not hungry, no appetite."
Daniel Carter gently suggested, "I have a dinner engagement tonight that should end around nine, can I pack something and bring it to you?"
"No need, hasn’t your grandfather been unwell lately? If you have time, you should go back early to keep him company."
I was too tired to deal with anyone.
And I didn’t want to vent my bad mood on Daniel Carter.
So I politely declined.
Daniel Carter seemed to sense it, paused for a moment, "Alright, then I’ll see you tomorrow."
After hanging up, I had no will to work and could only get off work and leave.
But misfortune struck, and even drinking cold water seems to freeze your teeth.
My car wouldn’t start again.
In just over two months, this was the second time this problem had occurred, making my dissatisfaction with this car skyrocket.
As I stood in front of the car trying to call after-sales service, a car passed by.
"President Miller, what’s wrong?"
I turned around to see it was Calvin Yance.
"President Yance? Oh, it’s nothing, the car has some minor issues, I’m having someone from the service center come to check." I politely replied and turned back, not planning to chat further.
Calvin Yance drove away.
I thought that was the end of it, but unexpectedly he just found another parking spot, parked, and then walked over to me.
"It’s raining today and it’s rush hour now, the roads are very congested, it might take a while for someone from the service center to arrive, let me help you check what’s going on."
I was surprised, "You know how to fix cars?"
Calvin Yance smiled slightly, "Men usually know a bit about machinery. Besides, I often participate in outdoor off-road activities, breaking down on the road is common, so I’ve learned gradually."
Oh, I nodded, remembering that he is an outdoor sports enthusiast.
He got into my car and started working, and seeing that the lighting wasn’t great, I turned on my phone’s flashlight and helped shine some light for him.
After a round of checks, he found the problem.
"Is the neighborhood you live in a bit old?" he asked out of nowhere.
I said, "It’s okay, not particularly new though." Daniel Carter has also complained about it being run-down.
"This is probably because your car was parked outside, and a rat chewed on the wires, causing poor contact."
Saying this, he turned and walked towards his car, "I’ll go get a toolbox."
I was secretly amazed, he actually knows how to fix cars!
Calvin Yance went to his car, brought over a toolbox, opened it, and inside were various repair tools and items like electrical tape.
"I can only give you a temporary fix for now; you should take it to the service center tomorrow to get the wires replaced, in case they lose contact again and it won’t start."
I was extremely grateful and thanked him repeatedly.
His hands got dirty, so I immediately took a bottle of water from the car and helped him wash his hands.
After Calvin Yance finished washing his hands and was wiping them, he looked at me and said, "It’s cold today, it reminds me of the hot pot you treated me to last time, President Miller."
The implication was clear when he said that.
I could only smile and respond, "Then shall I treat President Yance to hot pot tonight? Just to thank you for fixing my car."
Otherwise, I would have to wait in the cold garage for an hour or two for the service center staff to come and repair it.
Calvin Yance laughed, "Well, I hope President Miller won’t mind my shamelessness."
When he said this, I really couldn’t refuse.
So, we drove one after the other to the same seafood hotpot restaurant we visited last time.
I remembered how Daniel Carter had been jealous because of this and had asked me to bring him to this place once.
Thinking about it over and over, I felt a bit uneasy.
So after we sat down and ordered, I proactively explained the situation to Daniel Carter on WeChat.
I was afraid that if I had bad luck again, I’d run into Daniel Carter’s friends here, who might then report back to him.
Daniel Carter would undoubtedly misunderstand.
Obviously, I said I had no appetite and didn’t want to eat, and I even declined his offer to bring me food, yet I turned around and went out for hot pot alone with a male colleague...
When the time comes, it will be hard to explain myself.
I don’t want such a misunderstanding to happen.
Not long after I sent the message on WeChat, Daniel called me.
I had no choice but to get up and walk away to answer it.
"Didn’t your car break down once at the hospital before? Why is it broken again?" Daniel didn’t ask about my dinner with Calvin but was concerned about the car issue.
This made me satisfied, indicating at least he’s not one to get jealous easily.
I explained, "President Yance said the wires were chewed by mice. He helped to reconnect them temporarily, and I’ll go to the repair shop tomorrow."
"Okay." Daniel responded and then said, "I mentioned before about getting you a new car. It’ll happen in the next few days, so find some time to check it out together."
Instinctively, I refused, "No need, I haven’t used this car for long, and these two incidents were just accidents."
Daniel sighed, "I suggested you move to Lakeshore Villa, but you refused. I said I’d get you a new car, and you refused too. As your boyfriend, I should do something for you. Otherwise, I might just learn car repair myself."
His first two sentences surrounded me with sweetness.
But the last sentence made me amused and helpless.
Turns out he’s not devoid of jealousy, he just hid it until now.
I held back my laughter; my sullen mood suddenly improved: "Alright, if I have to choose between the two, I’ll pick the car."
"Are you free tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? That’s too rushed."
"It’s not rushed. Let’s check it out first. It takes two months for delivery after it leaves the production line."
"Alright, I’ll listen to you..." I didn’t want to keep rejecting him and seem difficult to please, so I went along with what he said.
Daniel suddenly asked, "Is it at the seafood hot pot place we ate last time?"
I was shocked, "What are you planning?"
"Nothing, once I’m done with the business dinner, I’ll come to pick you up. To prevent your car from having problems and breaking down halfway," he reasoned reasonably.
I rolled my eyes while holding my phone, feeling helpless.
But it was a happy eye roll.
"Okay, you insist on fussing, I can’t stop you."
After hanging up the phone, I returned to my seat, and Calvin had already started dipping the food.
"Hurry and eat, the ingredients here are very fresh, really nice." Seeing me seated, he immediately placed the hot seafood into my bowl.
I quickly refused, "Thanks, you eat, I can do it myself."
He smiled as if he hadn’t heard me and continued putting food in my bowl.
I remembered what Cherry said, mentioning Calvin might have feelings for me too.
At that moment, I felt Daniel’s idea to pick me up was quite good.
It’s also a way to indirectly tell him I have a boyfriend now, so he shouldn’t waste time on me.
After finishing the meal, it was 9 p.m.
I wondered if Daniel had finished his business dinner since it was relatively early, and then he called.
Upon picking up, I found out he was already at the entrance of the seafood hot pot restaurant.
"President Yance, a friend is picking me up, so..." I gestured with my hand to show I had to leave.
Calvin curiously asked, "What about your car?"
I replied, "Leave it here for now, I’ll have the repair shop take it away tomorrow."
With those words, I said goodbye to him and quickly walked outside.
But Daniel wasn’t waiting for me at the restaurant entrance; instead, he walked in.
We exchanged glances from afar, and he reached out his hand. I habitually lifted my hand, and, as I got closer, held his hand tight.
I thought he would directly take me out of the restaurant, but instead, he held me in place and waited for Calvin to come over.
I suddenly realized, this guy is—
"President Yance, thanks for tonight. I’ll host a gathering for President Yance some other day." He reached out his hand to Calvin warmly, with polite and humble words.
I mentally curled up.
Thinking, why do this! What will people think of me! I have to work in the same company!
Calvin smiled slightly, loosely shaking hands, and casually said, "No need for that. This relationship with President Miller is just a small effort, no need for courtesy."
Hearing this, my ears twitched.
What? My relationship with him is just a colleague one, but he made it sound like there’s something else.
Luckily, Daniel was calm. Unlike men with petty jealousy who would begin to insult.
Unable to handle the situation, I quickly said, "It’s late, and it’s raining, let’s all head home early."
Speaking while subtly squeezing Daniel’s hand, hinting enough is enough.
Daniel smiled, "Alright, President Yance, we’ll be leaving now."
I followed Daniel and turned to leave, feeling an embarrassing tingling in my back.
As I got into Daniel’s car, I couldn’t help but complain, "What were you doing? Just come when you come, I could just get in the car, but you came down specially to greet him!"
Daniel raised a brow slightly, "Isn’t this the most basic courtesy? He helped my girlfriend, I should express gratitude."
"Hmph, don’t think I don’t know your intentions." I directly exposed him and openly stated, "I was worried you’d misunderstand, that’s why I proactively explained it to you. Yet you did this, putting me on the spot."
"Hmph." He imitated me and snorted, saying, "If you weren’t so honest and docile, I wouldn’t just be polite with him."
"Really? So what more did you plan to do?"
He turned to look at me, speaking seriously, "I would come and directly kiss you, leaving him embarrassed."
