Chapter 14: Chapter 14

I ran towards the wolf with my gun still in hand, and I tried to shoot at its head, but it missed. Kane's wolf didn't loosen his grip on Jake's shoulder and I gripped the gun with both hands. I didn't want to make a mistake and shoot at Jake when aiming for his head since I couldn't aim it well just now.

So I aimed for its hind legs and pulled the trigger. Kane's wolf quickly let go of Jake's shoulder and let out a howl then turned towards me. He was growling as he barred his teeth. I raised up my gun to aim again, but he was already on top of me. His sharp teeth clamped onto my shoulder and held on.

Pain seared through my shoulder and all of my body. I tried to move, to push him off, but felt too weak to do so. Then all of a sudden, he let go of me as the sound of shots rang through the house. I took in a shallow breath and let it go. That was when my eyes closed, and I lost consciousness.

My eyes popped open in panic as I remembered Kane's wolf on top of me. I quickly sat up, and a wet towel fell from my forehead to my lap. That made me feel confused, and I looked to my side to see Jane looking at me with a worried expression.

"Max, thank God that you are awake. How do you feel?" Jane asked as she took the wet towel from my lap.

I glanced at my bandaged, right shoulder and raised my hand to run it through my curly, but straightened hair then sighed. "I feel like a mess, so groggy and tired, but no pain anymore."

"Good, that's good."

"Jake, where is he?" I asked as I looked around the bedroom.

Jane raised her hands,"Calm down, Max. He's fine and in another room. But he hasn't woken up yet since he was bitten longer than you were, and hurt more."

I felt terrible that he got so badly hurt while trying to protect me, and I also almost couldn't believe that Kane turned into a wolf. I looked back at Jane, "You guys all saw Kane change into a wolf, right?"

"Yes, we all did. Some of his gang members also turned into wolves, but we were still able to make them run off with our guns. It seems that they are werewolves even though that sounds impossible."

"Oh no, but I have never seen them turn into werewolves before when I was in their gang." I said, trying to figure out how it all happened.

"Maybe they were bitten and turned into werewolves after you left."

"Maybe. That means Jake and I can also turn into werewolves since we were also bitten."

Jane shrugged, "I really don't know, but we need to research."

"Yeah, and we will probably turn into werewolves during a full moon if we are affected by the bite.

"We will have to wait and see if that happens."

"And if it does, will you still be friends with us?"

Jane laughs, "Are you serious? Of course, this gang is more than friends, it's family."

"That's good to know, I will still be friends with you too if the situation was reversed."

Jane smiled, "See what I told you, deep down and even on the surface, you're a good person."

I rolled my eyes at her zeal to prove that I'm a good person, "Whatever. Tell me where Jake is."

Jane shook her head, "You have to eat first, Max. You have been unconscious for two days."

"I'm not hungry. I only need to see Jake and make sure that he's fine since he risked his life to save mine." I said stubbornly, crossing her hands across my cheat in defiance.

Jane sighed and placed the wet towel on the bed's side drawer. "Fine, I will show you where he is and bring you your food."

"Okay." I replied, standing up from the bed as she stood back up from keeping the towel.

She walked towards the door, and I followed out of the room and into the hallway. We walked to two doors down the room I was in and she pushed the door open. Sean, Shane, Mike, Drake and Alex were all sitting around Jake's bed as he laid there.

They all turned to look at us as I entered the to, and Jane went away to get my food probably. As I walked further into the room, I saw how sick and still Jake looked. It was almost as if he was dead. I ran over to him and hugged his chest, placing my ear right on his heart.

His heart beat was fast, very fast and I sighed a sigh of relief at the revelation. I raised my head and looked at his face. I couldn't help it when a few tears welled up in my eyes and escaped down my cheeks. Jake was not supposed to die, not when I just met him.

He gave me hope and more. I wanted to be better with him by my side. "He's going to be fine, Max."

I heard Shane's voice say, and Mike added, "Yeah, he should be waking up soon."

I glanced at Mike over my shoulder, "How are you sure of that?"

"The doctor came and checked up on you and him today." Mike replied, looking uncomfortable at how I was crying.

"Then why isn't he waking up even though the doctor left hours ago?" I asked, still feeling worried for Jake, and I have to admit, scared of losing him.

"Apart from him being bitten longer than you were, the doctor said you two both have fever, but he also has a concussion." Sean interjected to explain me.

"Okay, then I hope he gets better and wake up soon." I said as I turned back to Jake and wiped away the tears rolling down my cheeks with one hand.
