Chapter 10: Chapter 10

"Yes, we do Shane. Yes, we do." I replied to him. He was right, I didn't like hiding anything from her with how close we've become to each other.

"Where are Sean, Mike and Cassie, are they done with the work assigned to them?" I moved my head to face him. Shane was sitting on the arm chair beside the couch I was on.

"They're still on the case but almost done." He filled me in just as his phone beeped. He pulled it out of his pocket, checked it, then said without looking up, "And Jane texted that you're not replying to her texts."

"Oh, right." I reached for my phone from my back pocket, it was on silent, but I didn't remember leaving it that way. There were two texts, I clicked on the first one.

Jane: She's fyn. He said that evrytn's goin smoothly excpt that he overheard her sayin 'it's been a while since u nd her were in contact' 2 her frnd.

Jake: Tnx 4 the update.

I sent my reply then checked the second text.

Jane: Two of the drillers gang members attacked us. They follwd us to an alley nd Grey nw has a black eye, bt we're fine, we did a num on them ;). Kp watchin out Jake, we don't knw what their nxt move will be.

Jake: Tnx, nd I will.

"Tell Aiden, we need to have a gang meeting and fast." I said to Shane as soon as I finished replying to Jane.

He nodded then stood and started up the stairs. I sighed and ran my hand through my closely cropped hair. We needed to step up our game.

Max's POV

I entered the house and locked the door. I was just back from school and I was exhausted. Jake was still on my mind which was frustrating.

I flicked on the lights and removed my boots while facing the door.

"You should learn to lock your windows, you know." I screamed when I heard a voice boom out inside the quiet house.

I turned in the direction of the voice and there he was in his usual jeans, shirt and leather jacket. He was leaning on the staircase, arms folded and a teasing smile.

"Jake!" I exclaimed running to hug him. He enveloped me, holding me tight.

"I missed you, Max." He mumbled into my hair.

"Me too." I pulled away from the hug, stepping back to look at him.

"Where have you been?"

"Gang business." I opened my mouth to reply but he quickly placed his index finger against my lips.

"Don't worry, I'll tell you everything. Let's just watch some movies first, okay?"

Jake turned the T.V off with the remote and turned to face me. We were on the floor with our backs against the couch. I knew that was when the serious talk will begin, so I waited, thinking of the worst.

"Kane's gang have been attacking us."

I didn't expect that. How could Kane go as far as that, what did he want? I was so shocked that I stared at Jake before the words came.

"What? Why?" I asked with furrowed brows as confusion also downed on me.

"We don't know why, and we've been trying our best to fight back, but they're more than us in number."

I sighed as I shook my head, "Maybe it's because of me. I put you all in danger."

"No, don't say that, baby doll. Drillers have always been our rival gang, and don't worry, we'll get through this." He promised, staring into my eyes.

"What if it's me he wants? He wanted to finish you off for protecting me to get to me?" I said as worry gripped me, I couldn't bear it if I was the cause of all this.

"Stop over thinking, and even if he wants to get to you, we won't let him." He reassured as he gave me a smile.

"I know that, Jake, but what ifs keep coming back. What if we can't fight back? What if he does damage to the gang, and they don't recover? What if he hurts you?" I said the last part silently as I stared into his eyes and his smile broadened.

"I won't let it. I'm invincible, baby doll." I laughed and he did too.

"Enough of the sappiness." Jake said as she shook his head.

"I made new friends, well, friend."

"I know. And you should have more friends." He stood up from the floor, and took my hand to pull me up with him. I immediately let go as soon as I was up.

"We're going to my house." His house? He had told me that he didn't like staying at his house since his mom is usually at home.

"Your house?" I asked with surprise as my eyebrows raised.

"Yeah, is that weird?"

"Yes, it's very weird considering I've never been to your house."

"You will now, baby doll." He smirked as he led us to the door.

"So... this is your house." I was standing inside the house as Jake closed the door.

It looked modern and in style. The sitting room was very spacey with TV sets, two couches, four armchairs, paintings, vases and almost floor length glass windows with flowy curtains. There was a staircase opposite the entrance and a door to the right which I was guessing was the kitchen.

"Yep." He sat down on the couch, and I followed, but sitting at the far end.

"Why are you sitting so far away? Are you scared of me?" He raised an eyebrow as he smiled.

I scoffed, "No. I'm not scared of anything." I said crossing my arms and he turned to face me fully.

"You are, just like that day on the cliff. You are so scared of getting close to me, but I told you that I would never hurt you." He said sincerely as his expression turned serious.

"I know, Jake, but..." I started then paused and glanced at him.
