Chapter 38: Chapter 38

I zeroed in on her cabin, searching everywhere for her. Here kitty kitty…I could almost hear my inner diva calling with mock sweetness. I asked one of her possums her whereabouts. Something must have given away from my expression because she pointed her location to me without any fuss.

My inner self rubbed her hands in anticipation. I opened the washroom door with a bang and ordered everyone inside to get out with a hand gesture. Everyone scrambled except for Vivian, who must have lost her brain cells along the way. She gave a pose any model would be proud of, relaxed and nonchalant.

‘Oh, look what the cat dragged here? Lost your way sweetheart? Shall I show you the way to the exit? It would be my pleasure’, she drawled in her leisurely pose checking her lipstick.

Rather than give a reply to her, I turned and locked the door. Some of her brain cells must be still working properly I guess because for the first time she noticed her situation.

‘What exactly do you think you are doing? There are cameras all over the place. You would be fired if you try to do something’, she said with false bravado.

‘maybe you have not paid attention to where you are. Honey, there are no cameras in the washroom. Even Mr. Sinclair wouldn’t think of checking it here’, I stalked towards her as I talked to her, my heels clicking.

Fear registered in her face as her circumstances finally daunted on her. ‘You cannot…you wouldn’t…think of…there may not be any cameras inside, but they sure are outside. People would notice. I will tell them. I will call security’, She stammered her way as she backed each step.

‘Will you? Please do’, I taunted her.

Yes, now you are talking, my inner me said.

‘Se...Sec…Security…Security-’, She tried to shout but I cut her off with my hand on her neck. I dragged her until her back hit the wall. She tried to swallow, to talk, but I warned her with my eyes. Daring her to shout again. She tried to claw my hand away from her neck.

‘Listen to me bitch and listen very carefully. Because I’m not going to repeat it. Do you know what happens when I increase the pressure here?’, I put on pressure on her neck, not much, but letting her know I meant business.

Her eyes got big at my implication. She tried to open her mouth and intended to speak except I cut her off. ‘Oh yes, I think you do know what will happen. So be a good girl and listen to what I have to say. If you ever and I am very serious about it; ever try one of your stupid dirty politics on me again’, I spat each word letting her know what I think of it, ‘I promise you it would be days before anyone would find you. And honey, in case you were wondering, I’m referring to your dead body’, I clarified with a sweet smile lingering on my face.

She started to shake her head at that. But I’m not done with her yet. I brought her closer to me and whispered in her ear as if I’m sharing a secret, ‘You may doubt me. Oh, please do. I liked it very much when I got to prove how wrong they were. Alas, in your case you may not be alive to find out. What do you say? Shall we see what happens?’

At my threat, all her bravery flew away. ‘Please, I was trying to have some fun. Raphael favor’s you more than his other assistants. It’s not fair. I wanted to lower your priority in his eyes to us mortals. That’s all. I won’t do it again. Please, it won’t happen again’, she started pleading with me.

‘Now why should I believe you? What if you try again later? What if you spread some nasty rumors about me in the office? What-if!’, I gave a mock horror expression- putting my hands near my mouth, showing how fake scared I’m.

‘They are pretty stealthy, aren’t they? These what-ifs? niggling in the back of your mind, increasing your stress. But you know what? I don’t like stress. I don’t like what-ifs. So, what shall we do about it?’, I poked her chest with my unoccupied hand.

‘I promise there won’t be any rumors. I won’t…I mean we won’t come in your way. I promise. Please, believe me’, she gasped each word. I

‘One chance. Only one single chance. Blotch this up again and you may not see the sunrise the next day’, I threatened her with all my might and released my hold on her.

I turned and did a power walk towards the door. Never blow your exit. It must be just as powerful as your threat.

Would you really have done it? my inner me asked as if she was perched to take an interview of mine.

What do you think? I questioned in return.

No, she diagnosed.

How can you be so sure? I may have a killing streak in me.

You are a good bluff; I give you that. But killing an innocent? Please. You left that filthy Bob who committed those horrible crimes without a scratch. Vivian is just a bimbo trying to curry favor. Depending on your crime/justice meter she is way down there, my inner me explained to me.

Crime/justice meter? You are impressed, aren’t you?

Don’t get used to it, she turned her back on me.

Is it pathetic that you are happy because your inner me, which is only yourself, is impressed with you? Confused? Me too.

I checked the perimeter before leaving the washroom. Witness- never leave one intentionally or not. The coast is clear.

I joined other employees in the elevator as if nothing happened. God, I’m hungry. If I don't eat anything soon, I may go crazy. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that because when the elevator door opens, standing before me is none other than Nathaniel Sinclair.

‘Hey beautiful, going somewhere?’, he drawled, the picture of relaxation.

This day sucks. Literally. Are there any more surprises left? I wanted to shout at the sky.
