Chapter 16: Chapter 16

“Mum...” Sandra called immediately she saw me and started running towards me, which made Vicky look up towards me as well.

I slowed down when I saw Sandra’s speed towards me, and then, knelt down on one knee spreading my arms so that she can run into them.

“Mum Alex is in there with... with the doctors... he was covered in blood when they took him...” Sandra mumbled to me and my heart froze at her statement.

I know my kids, they are very observant and smart, before she could talk like this, the situation must be really critical.

I looked up to Vicky who has now walked up to me, from the look in her eyes it seemed like she has been crying herself, I don't think I dare to ask her any question because I am afraid of what her answer might be.

I just looked from her the Sandra who still have tears on her face and then to the nurse who brought me here.

“Excuse me, Miss.” The nurse said and then, turned and walked back the way we came, I guess she has to go back to her duty post.

“Kim....” Vicky finally said to me, I can hear the terror in her voice.

I slowly stood up, letting go of Sandra in my arms.

“Kim?” Vicky called again and I unconsciously hugged her, she hugged me tight too in return and I can feel now that she is trembling as well.

“I don't know how it happened Kim, I just know that Alex let go of my hand when I stopped to get them some balloons, and by the time I turned to give Santa her balloons after giving him his, he is already in the middle of the road... and the car was coming really fast... I couldn't save him, Kim...” Vicky tried to explain and she trembled as she speaks.

“How bad was it?” I asked after a while still holding her, not knowing what else to say or how I should react, the whole thing is dazzling me and I feel more or less numb right now.

“Really bad Kim..., really bad,” Vicky replied again amid tears.

“Where is he now?” I asked yet again, still holding her in an embrace, I can feel my body started to tremble as well as it began to dawn on me the gravity of Alex accident.

“He is still with the doctors, I haven't seen him or the doctors since they took him,” Vicky replied again, still holding me, Sandra is also holding on to my legs.

“Mum, will Alex be okay?” Sandra asked, pulling my legs.

I and Vicky let go of ourselves and I looked down to my daughter, nodding my head in response to her question since I don't know what to say to her at the moment.

“Vicky, Kim...” I heard a familiar voice call, I quickly turned around to see Jimmy Vicky’s boyfriend, I guess she must have called him here.

He gave Vicky a quick hug and then hugged me as well.

“What happened Vicky? You sounded so serious, and where is Alex?” Jimmy asked turning to face Vicky again and then back at me when he asked after Alex.

“Alex had an accident, Jimmy.” Vicky said and then explained to him what she had told me earlier about how the accident happened.

We all turned towards the door to the surgery room immediately it swung open, a doctor came out of the operation room.

“Are you the parents of Alex Brown?” The doctor asked looking at me and Jimmy who is standing by my side.

“Yes,” I replied almost immediately because all I wanted to know at the moment is the health condition of my son Alex and I think Jimmy nodded as well too without thinking.

I watched as a few more doctors or probably nurses walked out from the operations room as well.

“Mr and Mrs Brown your son Alex has survived the first stage of his operation and will be under observations, we are going to move him to the ICU, we also hope that he regains consciousness soon as he is still unconscious.” The doctor said looking from me to Jimmy.

“Is he going to be alright doctor? I mean is there anything we should be worried about?” Jimmy asked the doctor and I just nodded looking from Jimmy to the doctor in agreement to Jimmy’s question, since that was the exact question in my mind.

“well I'll be honest with you, your son’s accident is a critical one, and he is lucky to be alive right now, like I said, we are keeping him under serious observations.” The doctor said to us in reply to Jimmy’s question, I just turned and leaned on Jimmy for support as I do not feel like my legs can carry me much longer.

“Please do whatever it takes to save him, Doctor, you don’t have to worry about the bill’s.” Jimmy said to the doctor.

“You don't have to worry about the bill’s, Mr Kyle here have it covered already.” The doctor said pointing to a man standing by our side, whom I didn't take note of before now.

“And yes, I'll advise you to go take your blood samples in the laboratory unit and run a test to know which of your blood type matches that of your son’s because he has lost a lot of blood already and his blood type is a very rear one, he may need a blood transfusion so we need to be prepared for that.” The doctor said again turning to face us.

“Kyle please see me briefly in my office.” The doctor said turning to face the man he said covered the hospital bill earlier and I am wondering who he is.

“Please excuse me.” The doctor said, turning to face us again before walking away.

“Who is he?” I asked to no one in particular, turning to the man whom the doctor asked to see him in his office, I didn't get to see his face properly though, because he turned and followed the doctor immediately, walking beside him.

“Mummy he is the man who had hit Alex with his car.” Sandra told me.

I turned to Vicky at once to confirm what Sandra had just said to me, she nodded in acknowledgement, and I held my palms to my head as I have forgotten about that.

“I have to see him, he has to tell me why he had to do that to my son.” I said walking after them.

“No Kim..., calm down Kim...” Vicky said holding me back.

“It’s my fault actually, if I had paid attention to Alex, this wouldn't have happened.” Vicky said to me.

“You told me he was driving really fast, if he wasn't maybe this wouldn't have happened, he would have seen my son in time to stop his car.” I snapped pulling Vicky’s hand away from me.

“Kim get a hold of yourself.” Jimmy said trying to calm me down.

“We will go talk to the man, but please let's do it in a civil manner okay, please I beg you, Kim,” Jimmy added looking at me and then turned to hold Vicky who seemed like she needed his support.

“Okay Jimmy, can we go talk to him before he leaves the hospital?” I asked peering at them with teary eyes.

“Okay.” He replied, picking Sandra up and then led the way...
