Chapter 62: Chapter 62

I didn't realize I was holding for my breath, clutching tightly onto Ethan's shirt as I foreknew the old man's answer. I was praying silently while shaking my head, begging not to tell where our location was. One wrong word, and both of us are dead by now.

Ethan was gripping tightly on my waist, but I could discern the tension in his palms. His heart was pounding clangorously, and his eyebrows were formed into a straight line. He gritted his jaw, preserving his breath. He was nervous, and at the same time, he was pushing himself to be valiant in case something went wrong. He would be here for me.

"Two people? Running away?" the old man squinted his eyes, eyeing the pictures Allen was showing to them. I noticed the grip on his shotgun tightened. He gradually but carefully pointed it at us, making sure to stop us from running away as he was busy finding out the truth.

"It's complicated to explain, sir. However, these two persons are involved in a criminal matter. Furthermore, someone reported they saw a beast and a woman it captured then ran away from the city. We acknowledge that these persons are involved with each other, and they somehow know the beast."

My heart started to thrash so loud it made my stomach queasy. I peeked through the tiny space in the door, trying to see outside the porch. We saw Allen and his comrades, fully armed and ready to go to war. He looks exhausted and incensed about what happened to his other colleagues that Ethan slaughtered. He's seeking justice.

I saw he was holding a picture of my last time in the gas station. On the other hand, was a picture of me getting dragged away by Ethan running away from the apartment. It was a shocker to see pieces of evidence of us in a matter of time, and Allen somehow put the elements together. That means we deal with someone who knows how to solve a puzzle by just looking at it.

We're being surrounded, getting caught like a mouse, and Allen was the cat. There's no place to run anymore. I am wounded and losing blood. If Allen insisted on inspecting the site, this would be the end for us.

"Hmm, I see." the old man nodded, looking convinced. A long deafening silence enveloped the whole area. The old man stayed silent, but he dropped his gun, which somehow removed the pressure I felt. Ethan released a breath.

We waited for him to say something, but he remained silent. I peeked through the door, looking at Allen, just to see him getting intolerant as he was stomping his foot slightly on the ground. He noticed the old man was holding a gun when he peeked down. His brows were wrinkled.

"Sir, do you have the ownership to carry a gun?" Allen intrigued, then took a step forward. However, the old man suddenly stopped him with his hands giving him a look. If he took action inside his territory, hell would rise.

"I live in the woods alone. What do you expect?" he asked incredulously.

"But, you need-"

"Look, you asked if I know these two, and my answer is no. You can now leave my place." the old man impatiently told Allen and was about to close the door when Allen blocked his hand, stopping him from shutting the door in his face.

"I am a Sergeant, and it is my job to serve justice to those who suffered under the wrath of this beast. So I am asking you if you have seen these-"

"You're stubborn, you know that? I told you I don't know them, and I don't know there was a chase in these areas. If you are going to ask about my gun, someone almost killed me here, and I need something for self-defense. I live far away from the city, so I would be dead before authorities like you arrive."

"For the last time, I don't know them. I haven't seen them in my life. Good night." the old man slammed the door, leaving Allen and his goons outside. We remained in our spot when the old man turned around and then walked straight into the middle of the house when he stopped. We waited for him to say something when Ethan spoke.

"Why you didn't tell them about us?"

Ethan took a step forward, trying to reach the old man. However, he ceased in his tracks when the old man looked at us from his shoulder. His eyes gleamed in monstrosity as the man was not in his usual mood to talk. He sharply gritted his jaw, then clicked his tongue.

"I saved your ass. That's enough for today. Go sleep anywhere here. My night is ruined already." he grumpily said, then stormed away, leaving us behind. Ethan was dumbfounded. His hand stopped mid-air and dropped to his side, sighing in downfall.

A discomfiting quietness echoed throughout the whole corners of the room. I was also confused why the old man told Allen he didn't know about us. In fact, Allen even presented some evidence to him.

"I guess we have no choice," Ethan muttered, then looked around the area, searching for something, when his eyes stopped on the kitchen. Ethan quickly but carefully dropped me on the wooden chair and then looked for something in the kitchen. My eyes wandered around the room when I saw a silhouette hovering over Ethan.

"Ethan!" I shrieked, but before someone could attack Ethan, he quickly grabbed the person's arm resisting it from slashing his head. I covered my mouth with my hand. My heart was accelerating. The person struggled to fight Ethan, but he yanked the person's arm, causing them to step forward into the light.

My heartbeat stopped for a moment when I saw who it was. A woman with long silky, radiant black hair reached above her buttocks. She was wearing a nightgown, so I could clearly see her long ideal legs. I couldn't see her features clearly cause of the angle. Ethan tightened his grip on her hand, causing her to stumble and lose her balance. The knife dropped on the floor, and Ethan stepped on it.

"Who are you?" Ethan asked while clenching his hand.

"I should be the one who is asking that question! You're in our territory!"

I was stunned when she spoke. Her voice was like an angel; it was delicate and satiny. When she looked up, that's when I froze on my spot.

Her face was out of this world, and I couldn't find the exact words to describe her. Her nose was pleasing in appearance. It was everyone person's standard. Her lips were naturally red and plumped, and her eyelashes were long as if she was wearing mascara when she wasn't. I couldn't but feel awe-inspiring.

"I thought that old man lived here alone."

I snapped back to reality when Ethan spoke. The woman wrinkled her forehead and then helped herself get up, pointing her candle shape fingers to Ethan.

"I'm his granddaughter. We both live here. What are you doing here?! Are you a murderer?" she assumed, then pushed Ethan on his chest. Still, Ethan grabbed her arms and then yanked her body, causing her almost to fall to the ground, but she balanced herself. They stared into each other's eyes, then I noticed how her expression changed when she stared at him.

"My wife is injured. I need some bandages to clean her wound."

The woman's eyes dilated in stupefaction, and her mouth fell hanging. She scanned the area then our eyes met. She slightly pushed Ethan away to let her an access to get to my spot. She quickly crossed the gap between us, kneeling beside my place.

"Oh god, what happened to you, darling?" she asked while caressing my cheeks.

"You're pale, and your body is getting cold. What happened? And how did you end up in this place." she asked in succession.

"It's hard to explain. She needs to be treated." Ethan said in a panicking way, then stood beside the woman. Ethan kneeled on my side and took my hand. He brought it to his lips, gently kissing my knuckles.

"Rest, my love. Everything is going to be okay. We will do everything to heal you," he whispered lovingly and then patted my cheeks. He stood up straight. I reached for him, but my head swayed. My vision becomes blurry.

"W-what's happening-?" I didn't even hear my own voice. I raised my hand, but Ethan pushed them to my side. The woman quickly left us. Ethan was telling me something, but I couldn't hear him correctly.

I want to stay awake because I want to know what they will do. For some unknown reason, my heart was not especially pleased when I saw how beautiful the woman was before. Especially if the two of them and Ethan are left open-eyed. Many things can happen while I'm asleep. Especially and maybe they would manually remove the bullet behind me.

I held Ethan's hand, begging him not to leave me. He seemed to understand what I wanted to convey because he nodded. The woman arrived on the scene and gave something to Ethan. They were talking, but I could not understand their words. I was about to faint.

My eyes dilated as I looked at the woman staring at Ethan's side. I know these kinds of looks. My muscles weakened as Ethan pushed me to the side of the bed. I wanted to howl and struggle, but darkness had engulfed me, and the last thing I remembered was the woman's appearance.
