Chapter 44: Chapter 44

Miguel went to Dr. Hamilton’s office after they have placed Camilla in the intensive care unit, at the hospital on arrival back to her city, he knocked on the door that was slightly open.

Dr. Hamilton had been Miguel’s doctor and friend for years, and he is also well acquainted with Camilla, he's also aware of how much love Miguel feels for her and was surprised when Miguel told him that Camilla had been in an accident.

Dr. Hamilton lifted his gaze off his table when he heard the knock. "Come in." He said when he saw Miguel. He had sent for Miguel so that he could tell him about Camilla’s situation and was going through her file to get familiar with her case.

“Dr. Hamilton, you asked to see me.” Miguel said, as he walked into Dr. Hamilton's office.

“Yes Miguel, please have a sit.” He replied, and gestured with his hand to a chair opposite his desk. He was still going through Camilla’s file when Miguel entered his office.

"Give me a minute please." He said, and went back to flipping the file, while Miguel sat down on the chair he was asked to sit on, with his eyes fixed on Dr. Hamilton. He could see that it was Camilla’s file and was hoping to hear some positive news but the expression he saw on the doctor’s face made his heart more worried, "what could be the problem?" Miguel said inwardly still taking note of his facial expression.

After a short while Dr. Hamilton lifted his gaze to Miguel who sat still waiting for him patiently, he could already see the worried look on Miguel’s face which got him a little worried himself but he need to tell Miguel the fact about Camilla’s condition so he paused his lips thinking of the best words to use in telling him about the health condition of Camilla.

“Well… what is it?” Miguel asked, gesturing with his hand too, urging Dr. Hamilton to speak up already as he was becoming too anxious already.

Dr. Hamilton took off his eye glasses, slowly put it down on the table and robbed his palms together like someone who is deep in thought.

“What is it?” Miguel asked again, sensing that something is wrong, he could see that he is hesitating to say what the problem was.

“Well, I just went through Camilla’s report.” He paused and looked at Miguel intensively then continued.

“According to what you have told me concerning the accident, I think it was a miracle for Camilla to still be alive.” Dr. Hamilton said, looking for a safe way to start, holding his both palms together with his eyes focused on Miguel who is still waiting impatiently for him to say his reason for calling him into his office.

“Camilla suffered a head injury due to the accident.” Dr. Hamilton continued. “So I am afraid she has slept into a comma...” he said after a short pause.

“Comma?” Miguel asked interrupting him, as he sat up, on the chair he is sitting on.

“Yes comma, Miguel, but you need to sit down and please try not to panic.” Dr. Hamilton replied rather calmly, looking up at Miguel who is standing half way up, as if saying it that way would lighten the pain the news had brought to him. “you do not need to panic Miguel, she will be alright again,” Dr. Hamilton said again, trying to get him to calm down.

“It can't be, no Dr. Hamilton, it can’t be." Miguel said, he seems not to have heard what Dr. Hamilton just said and then sat down again slowly on the chair he was sitting on.

"The doctor who had attended to her before I brought her here, said her vital organs seems okay, how then can she be in a comma?” Miguel asked leaning back on his chair.

“He didn't say anything about a head injury. He continued, as he shook his head back and forth and his face hardened with grief.

“You see Miguel, that is what the report I have here says, I’m sorry Miguel.” Dr. Hamilton said, seeing how sad Miguel looked.

“This is all my fault.” Miguel said shaking his head frantically. “I should not have let her go on that journey by herself, now look at the outcome.” He continued, this time holding his head in his palms.

“Stop it Miguel, how can you say it's your fault? It was an accident you know, and accidents are bound to happen.” Dr. Hamilton said, standing up from his chair and walked over to hold Miguel’s hand.

“No Hamilton, I should have been there with her, I should have insisted on going on that journey with her, if I had, maybe this wouldn't have happened.” Miguel replied, biting his lower lip as he pulled his hand away from Dr. Hamilton.

“Well, we don't know when things like this want to happen so there's no need to beat yourself up about it.” Dr. Hamilton said patting Miguel who bent over his knees on the back.

“Let’s just hope that, she wakes up soon which I believe she will." He added again trying to be positive for Miguel’s sake and then walked back to his seat.

Miguel shook his head again, still regretting why he did not go with Camilla to Antonio’s burial.

“Can I take her home? I would like for her to be treated at home, that way I can watch over her properly. Miguel requested looking up at Dr. Hamilton.

“Yeah sure, I wanted to ask you that myself, it’s your decision whether to keep her here or take her home.” Dr. Hamilton replied.

“Okay, thanks.” Miguel said, as he stood up, ready to leave Dr. Hamilton’s office.

“Any time, Miguel.” He replied, nodding too and watched Miguel leave his office. He hoped Camilla gets better from this, else he would not know what would become of Miguel.
