Chapter 12: Chapter 12

Michael and George went back to Michael’s apartment immediately after they finished with their classes. George has been pestering Michael to give him a little detail of what happened between he and Brenda and Michael has continuously refused to give in.

Inside Michael’s apartment George asked Michael if he has called Brenda. "No, i haven't called her yet, what am I going to tell her ?" Michael asked, looking briefly at George who gave him a serious look.

"What! Don't tell me you want this golden opportunity to pass you by." George asked and urged Michael to give Brenda a call, he told Michael that for a girl to give a guy her phone number means the girl is interested in the guy.

“Give her a call Mike.” George urged Michael as he sat down on the bed, he picked up a small hand ball on the bed and throws it at Michael who quickly dropped the bag he was holding on the floor and caught the ball.

“No George, not yet, I don’t know what to say to her and besides I don’t know if I’m ready.” He replied and rolled the ball a little in his hands and then threw it back at George who caught it as well.

“Ready for what Mike? Just pick up the phone and give her a call.” George said still urging Michael to give Brenda a call. He could see from the look on his face and his reactions that he liked Brenda and wonder why he was letting his shy nature stop him from having a good time with the girl.

“No George, I said I’m not ready yet, besides I don’t even know her.” Michael replied, ignoring George’s urge to call Brenda, he bent down and started picking up some of his clothes he had left on the floor this morning because he was running late to school.

“Come on Mike I insist, you don’t need to know her, just roll with it. I am not asking you to marry her, just give her a call and find out if she is ready to get down with you… you know what I mean… it is obvious the girl touched some soft spot in you…” George said standing up, he walked over to Michael’s table and saw the note Brenda had written to Michael, before Michael could reach the note George already has it in his hand.

“Let’s see, is this the note you received from Brenda?” George asked looking at the note and smiling as he read it, he skipped back and forth avoiding Michael who is trying to get the note back.

“Give that back George, come on give me the note.” Michael said pleadingly to George who ignored his plea and began to dial the number Brenda had written on the note.

“Stop it George.” Michael pleaded as he tried in vain to stop George. “Sshh…” George said to Michael putting a finger against his lips. “It’s ringing, now take the phone and talk to her.” He said and handed the phone to Michael who reluctantly took it.

“Hello;” a voice called out over the phone immediately he placed the phone over his ears.

“Hello there.” Michael answered not sure of what to say next, he turned and looked furiously at George, who gave him a smile and a tomb’s up cheering him on.

“Who’s this?” Brenda asked over the phone, and pulled the phone a little away from her ear, wondering who was calling her.

“Emm…, is this Brenda?” Michael asked, stammering in return as he lifted his hand and unconsciously touched his hair, still trying to figure out what to say, his eyes followed George as he walked to the bed and lay down putting his both palms under his head, and winked at him when their eyes met still cheering him on and encouraging him to go ahead and speak to Brenda, Michael shot him a rather wild stare and turned his gaze away ignoring him.

“Yes, Brenda speaking, who am I onto please?” Brenda replied and asked, now realizing who was calling her judging by the sound of his voice, she has waited for his call after the night they spent together and had begun to get her mind of him, thinking that he would not give her a call.

“Brenda, this is Michael, Michael Williams, George’s friend, we met at my birthday party.” Michael explained in a near husky tone, feeling a little hot even though his room’s temperature is cool, he bit his lower lip afterwards because of the way his voice sounded strange to him, he turned and shot an angry stare at George who smiled to him in return. Feeling angry that he would put him in this awkward position but George looks like he is enjoying the way the conversation is going.

“Oh Mike, I have been expecting to hear from you, I thought you would never call.” Brenda replied, stating how she feels. Her reply took Michael by surprise as he is not expecting to hear her say that to him.

“Sorry Brenda, I have been busy with school that’s why.” Michael said, mustering up some courage to talk to her, thinking now that it would not be a bad idea to give George’s idea a go and trying to hook up with her by himself, “How are you?” He asked, this time his voice sounded a little like his as he tried to be brave.

“I am good and you?” Brenda said and asked in return, sensing the way his voice sounded, it reminded her of the previous night she had with him, and this brought a little smile to her face as she recalled his rather childish behavior that night.

“Good, good.” Michael answered not sure of what he is going to say next, he pulled the phone away from his ear immediately afterwards and cleared his throat a little bit as he felt something down there.

He and Brenda stayed silent for a while, Michael held the phone off his ears again and whispered to George who was watching and waiting for him to make the move himself. “Now what’s next?” he asked, his brows lifted a little at George for help.

“Tell her you want to hang out, silly.” George whispered back to him, shaking his head a little, wondering when he was going to man up completely, especially after hanging out with a guy like himself who could talk to just any girl and get her to listen to him.

“Hello, are you still there?” Michael asked holding the phone back to his ears a second time, his heart racing a little as he hoped that she was still there.

“Yes, Michael, I am still here.” Brenda answered, getting a little impatient with him for keeping her waiting and not speaking up quickly as he should, she decided she was not going to help him out this time even thought it was obvious what he wanted to say to her, he wanted him to say the words himself since he had finally called.

“Are you free this weekend?” Michael asked coyly and turned his head to George's direction, who nodded encouraging him to go on.

Brenda waited for a while before she decided to respond to him. “Yes, why?” she asked in return, still waiting for him to ask her out properly.

“Would you want to hang out with me?” Michael asked, still looking at George who still nodded and gave him thumbs up this time, feeling happy that he had finally asked the question.

“Yea, I thought you would never ask.” Brenda replied, smiling from the other end of the phone, feeling happy that he could finally say the words she wanted him to say.

“Okay, it’s a date then, I’ll text you the time and place.” Michael said and hung up shortly afterwards, he paused and then stared at the phone in his hands for a while, he could not believe he just asked a girl out and the girl immediately said yes in return, this was amazing, he thought as he continued to stare at he phone.

“I bet that went well?” George asked looking at the expression on his friends face, even though he did not look at him but stared at the phone in his hand, he could sense by his countenance that his conversation with Brenda went well.

“Yea, I have a date.” Michael answered after a little silence raising his head to look at George with a smile spread across his lips. He could not still believe that he pulled that off.

“You see it’s not that difficult, you owe me man.” George said smiling back at him, and feeling very happy for him.
