Chapter 13: Chapter 13
Both Acwell and Kamiah’s flashbacks keep coming until they finished their shifts and went home.
Kamiah remembered the days she and Acwell broke up and stop talking. Back then, she was full of hurt and anger as to why Acwell did it. She was still new in Dubai, with no friends and away from her family. She would cry a lot until she loses weight. Luckily, she had an understanding and kind roommate. She sat with her one day to ask what is going on with her.
“I noticed that you have been crying a lot since the day you came. Are you feeling homesick?” she said.
“Yes and no,” Kamiah answered.
“Why no?”
“I applied for a job here in Dubai because of my boyfriend. But I found out that he had been cheating on me. So I feel like I came here for nothing and alone.”
“Don’t say for nothing. You came here for a better job opportunity and you would never know that he was cheating not unless you are here. So, be grateful even if it hurts.”
Starting from that day, they become close. Every off they would go groceries together or just go out to see Dubai. They would walk in the park. They would run together.
Luisa influences her in capturing pictures and putting them on social media. This is not to show off but to reassure their family back home that they are alright and for that picture to serve as a reminder of happy memories that they should be grateful for.
Slowly, with Luisa’s help, Kamiah was able to heal from her heartbreak. She shifted her focus to being good at her job. She had set a goal that as soon as she finishes two years, she will start looking for another job outside Dubai. But when she was no longer thinking of Acwell, he communicated with her.
Acwell will call her, but she won’t answer. He will send her messages but she won’t reply. But he was very consistent. Until she finally gave in and agreed to meet him so they can talk. After their first meeting, he would find Acwell always doing a surprise visit during his off to the accommodation she was staying in. His reason is that he misses her and wanted to make up for the time that he did not see her. And after a few months, Kamiah gave Acwell another chance.
Looking back, she understood now why he ended their relationship. It was when he was trying to take responsibility for Fiona’s pregnancy, no matter how unhappy he was.
Acwell also remembered those days when he ended his relationship with Kamiah. He remembered it as one of the painful things that happened to him. It was hard spending months not being able to talk to her or see her. All he does was follow her on her social media to check how she was doing. He keeps missing her that sometimes he wanted to call her to say sorry but he can’t. He was about to get married, so he must let her go.
One day, he was looking at Kamiah’s Instagram account and Catrina saw it. It made her very furious. He knows she can tell that he is not fully into her, that is why her insecurities are as high as the roof. But the way she talks made him finally decide to end their relationship regardless of whether she is pregnant. He finds it unhealthy to be with someone that not a single day won’t argue with him.
After that fight, he and Catrina never talk or see each other. He just busies himself with work. And when somebody told him that she already left, he immediately finds his way to rekindle with Kamiah. It was difficult to convince Kamiah. She has every right not to trust him. It took him months before she gave their relationship a second chance.
Catrina did not stop sending him messages or emails. She would always update him about the pregnancy. He even knows how happy she was when she found out that she would have a baby girl. She named her Amara, after her grandmother’s name, and Selena, after his mom’s name. Sometimes she would ask for financial help so she can prepare for the delivery and the baby's needs. But he would never reply. It doesn’t mean that he was not that concerned about what she is going through. It’s because he knows once he did, Catrina would think they are back together, and then she will start dictating and demanding him of what he must do.
This only changes after she sends him a video of the newly born Amara. She said she just gave birth and wanted to show him how the baby is. He could not deny that Amara looks like him. His heart aches for his daughter. He did not want her to be caught up in such a situation. But he was hoping, when she grows up, she would understand why he did what he did. And that same day, he emailed Catrina for the first time.
Catrina was so elated by his reply. She said she had never stopped waiting for she knows he will come around. She said she knows he cares for her and Amara. But Acwell clarified that he is only making contact because of their daughter and nothing more. He only wants to see how his daughter is doing and to provide her child support. Catrina replied angrily and swearing that they fight via email.
Eventually, Catrina agreed to Acwell’s condition. She said she was not happy and deeply hurt, but for Amara, she would do it. Her savings are slowly depleting and she still doesn't have a job. She needs Acwell’s financial help to raise Amara.
Until now, their situation is the same, but at least somehow Acwell is happy that Catrina got a job. They can now both share the expenses for their daughter.
