Chapter 72: Chapter 72
TRISTAN:
I had no time to spare. If the prince and his men were here, then the fight would be soon be finished, and Samalah wouldn’t even stand a chance.
As a water fairy, Samalah was very cunning and powerful, but as a wolf, she’s not that skilled.
If only Samalah did not resent the wolf part of her, she wouldn’t have neglected her training so much. If so, I wouldn’t be in the position that I needed to rescue her nor will she be in a position where she needed someone to come to her side…
Despite the strong history of friendship between Samalah and I, there was one thing we had kept an oath not to do – that is to never fall in love with each other.
Samalah’s heart was frigid. She was also quite unforgiving and liked to make things even for every small inconvenience she was put into.
There were days in the past when she and I had given to bouts of heat, but she had clearly drawn a line between us, telling me that we were nothing more than friends, and we will be nothing more than it…
I had given up ever liking Samalah after that, and she had never shown interest on me other than her occasional desire for copulation. Yet, despite the blurry line of our relationship, Samalah was the one true friend I could never lose, especially to a wolf from the Talandor Kingdom whom we both hated to the core.
I scanned the place as I ran towards the center of the fight. I needed to find the silver-blue wolf form of Samalah soon.
Everywhere I looked, however, I couldn’t see her. Did she already escape from the fight?
I decided to sweep through the place of battle one last time to make sure she wasn’t there before I make a run for it and escape from this.
Unfortunately, someone stepped out in front, and it was none other but the grey wolf of that rascal prince.
“Looking for someone, Shadow wolf?”
I don’t know how he came up with that title, but I ignored him. Tonight, my rune wasn’t showing in my forehead as I made sure that I covered it up with Livia’s help earlier.
I made the fatal mistake of running in the midst of the battle last time in Lagros without thinking straight, and as such, the vampires may have memorized my wolf’s face.
Too bad though, I had no intentions of getting caught nor killed tonight, especially by someone who was waiting to snatch my wife from under my nose!
The gray wolf before me was smaller. It would have been nice to play with him and see his confidence crumble down as he loses, but today, I’ve got no time to humor him. I went straight for the kill.
I snapped my jaws around his neck. My teeth sank into tender flesh, smearing his fur with his own blood.
He was quick. He was able to get away from my jaws, and he still had the nerve to snarl at me.
“Good job,” he said as he grunted. “Now, I can track you wherever you bloody go!”
I watched in awe as something magnificent began to happen.
Out of nowhere, the raw and open wound along the gray wolf’s neck before me lit up like crystal dusts. As the dusts faded into the air, the whole gaping wound also began to disappear in an alarming rate. In no time, the gash I had created had sealed itself away as if nothing had happened.
Werewolves can regenerate themselves. Some can do it faster than others, but I have never seen anyone do it in such speed and fashion!
I clenched my teeth as I realized what the prince’s words meant. He used himself as bait so that he could hunt me down afterwards!
There was no time to lose! I let out a howl long and loud enough to be heard from miles. Hopefully, that would be enough.
Luckily, as soon as I let that out, I heard another wolf howled in the distance. She sounded far away from the site already.
After confirming with a signal that Samalah was nowhere near the site, I turned around and ran as fast as I could away towards an escape.
There was a hint in the blasted prince’s words from earlier that he knew me or that he was sure that I will show up here tonight… I hated to think that someone would spill our plans to the enemies, but I think that’s the case…
A loud growl came from behind me. As expected, the prince and his men had made me the target of their pursuit.
I scampered through the thickets and bushes of the woods. I knew these woods well. I made sure that I could traverse it like I knew the back of my hand before Samalah and I had tried to plan this all out.
I wanted to use my magic, but it would be far too dangerous. The last time I used my magic, the prince had sensed it, and there might be a good chance he’ll be able to tell that it was me if he sees me using my magic again.
As such, I had to rely on Arthur and my own instinct to get away from these damned ones!
One wolf lunged itself to my side, perhaps attempting to slam me against a tree trunk. He did not succeed, however. He was considerably smaller, and thus his weight had no bearing.
As he tried to pin me down though, another wolf attached its jaws on my tail while another one attacked me from the left side.
What did I expect? Of course these wolves were part of the palace because they were skilled. Everything they were doing was part of a careful tactic to hunt me down.
Frantically, I ran from them. Despite the blood trickling down from the different bite marks in my body, I ran like hell.
As soon as I reached a spring, the help I needed came.
Splashes of water came sprouting from the spring directly into my pursuers’ faces. This was the protection magic bestowed upon me by Samalah. As long as I can come near bodies of water, I can connect to her power and summon the water source to help me out.
I crossed the shallow spring and made it to the other side safely.
I was saved… or so I thought.
I failed to see the familiar gray wolf leap out from a tree and attack me from below. Just like what I did to him earlier, he went for the kill and bit me on the neck with his sharp fangs.
