Chapter 131: Chapter 131
"I'm going to help you get Maya back not because you deserve her but she deserves to be happy."
Xavier snorted hoping that Jared was aware that he was not just going to take his words for it at face value because if he did, then he must be frickin delusional.
"How can I trust you? Believe that this isn't some elaborate plan with your big dipshit of your best friend. Like you both have been really tight for years, so how do you want me to believe you are really fucking him over and you are not fucking with me right now?"
Jared chuckled, he had seen the big whys coming. Whys he had even asked himself. Why help Xavier get the girl when if he tried hard enough there were possibilities he might sneak his way into Maya's life especially now she was vulnerable and weak? but he didn't want love to make him a bad guy, he wanted it to make him a better person just like it had, Xavier. Besides he was of the school of thought that if something was meant for you then you don't have to try way too hard and Maya wasn't for him. She was for this rude arrogant businessman in front of him who was still trying to hide how vulnerable he truly was.
"Maybe because I've always been a good kid, and I just want to do the right thing." He gave Xavier a little smile even as Xavier rolled his eyes aware he was kidding with him.
Then frowning and calling off his ruse he shrugged, "Because no matter how hard I think about it no other person can make Maya as happy as you can. I want to be that guy badly," he chuckled, "You don't know how badly I want to be that guy, I tried to be that guy but I ain't and you are." He grimaced, "A man knows when to count his loss and sit back."
"So you don't have anything that is in it for you, in all this?" The distrust in Xavier's eyes made him almost chuckle. The guy seriously had trust issues but you couldn't be coy and trusting if you were a gladiator in the business world and amass wealth as he did.
"Who said I didn't have anything in it for me?"
Xavier rolled his eyes and brought out his checkbook, tear out a leaflet, signed, and handed him a pen to write whatever amount he wanted.
Jared laughed not at all feeling insulted, he would just let this slide. He was a businessman after all and should be understanding towards another who had the same fucked up thoughts that money could buy just about anything.
"You know I do not need money," he whispered, even as he tore the blank cheque, "And if you could get Maya with money we won't be here. Let's not reduce her to an amount of money now, that would be rude don't you think?"
"What do you want?" Xavier harshly asked exasperatedly showing him he didn't have any time to spare for his gimmicks.
"I want you to make Maya happy, so happy because she deserves it. She is a good girl."
Xavier chuckled, "Repeating yourself are we?"
"Repetition most times enunciate seriousness," he sat up, "I'm not giving up this fight because I don't know how very well to fight it, but because I simply want her to be happy and as sad as it is to acknowledge, Maya has a poor taste in men so she needs you to make her that happy. But if you don't do that, I just might come back for her."
Xavier scoffed, "You never stood a chance."
Jared grinned knowing that words would be too much of an effort especially since even Xavier was aware of how scared he had been of him.
"Now the gimmicks and business transactions are out of the way," he flashed Xavier a mocking grin at the use of his word business, raising his brow at the shredded cheque, "Let's get down to why we are here."
Xavier nodded totally on the same page with him. Spending so much time with him might make him get the wrong ideas, they were not friends.
"This is all about Diane. He is going to tell Maya about Diane and we are both aware of how badly he would try to flip the story making you seem to like her murderer. You need to beat him to it."
Xavier had stiffened the minute, Diane's name had been mentioned and slowly without realizing it he shook his head as vivid images of that day flashed through his eyes like a brief vision.
He had just called things off with one of his nicknamed by Melissa back then "One month stands" who had gotten clingy and had asked him to choose between her and his best friend just because he had canceled their original plan to go to his house since Diane was stranded and her brother had once again forgotten to pick her up before heading home.
He remembered telling Diane to hop into his car without looking back and noticing how her eyes had widened. At that time, all he thought he saw in her eyes was gratitude but he didn't know he had also ignited hope while at it. She had confessed her feelings for him which he had suspected she harbored for a while but couldn't afford to clear the air at the time, he had needed the emotional stability she brought to him, the beauty that came with friendship. He had thought she just might stop feeling that way if they both never addressed it.
But right then and there, he knew he couldn't lead her on now she had expressed herself. He had so much respect for her and what they share to just want sex with her and he was damaged to attempt a relationship. He had tried to explain this as calmly as possible but she wouldn't even hear him out.
The traffic light had turned red, she had run away from the car covering her face trying to muffle her cry and he had followed but not fast enough.
Because he saw her sprawled on the ground. It was a hit and run and she had died on the spot.
He could have waited till they were at home or he would have just tried to love her. She'd loved him so much yet she had died and he could do nothing, so how could Jared say it was not his fault? What could he say to Maya that could shift the blame from himself to any other person?
"I can't,"
Jared laughed hoarsely, "You can hand me a blank cheque but you can't tell the truth to the one woman you claim to love so much?"
"I don't just claim to__" he gritted his teeth, " I love Maya."
