Chapter 115: Chapter 115
"What’s the point of talking nonsense? If you can figure out a way to get some benefits from your sister-in-law, that’s real skill!" Grandpa Bai remarked coolly as he puffed on his tobacco pipe, watching his daughter-in-law chat animatedly with her mother-in-law.
"Old man, how did Daliang’s family suddenly become so well-off? I heard from Xiao Ying that they’re eating well every day!" Grandma Bai looked at her husband, puzzled.
"That young intellectual from the Capital City obviously has skills! Do you even need to ask?" Grandpa Bai rolled his eyes at his wife and turned away.
Over at Bai Ruxue’s place, by the time she arrived with her children, most of the relatives had already gathered, and they were getting ready to pick up the bride. Since the bride was from a nearby village, there was no rush; they just needed to bring the new wife home at the auspicious time.
Moreover, they didn’t need to prepare any vehicles, as everyone could just walk back.
"Sis, you’re here too! I thought you wouldn’t make it!" Wang Yongsheng exclaimed, happy as a child upon seeing Wang Cuihua.
"Yes! Hurry up and prepare to pick up the bride! You’re about to have a wife, yet you still act like a kid!" Wang Cuihua laughed, straightening her brother’s clothes.
This outfit was made by her own daughter, and it looked particularly nice!
Bai Ruxue looked at Wang Yongsheng, wearing black pants with a red top. Though it wasn’t a suit, he looked vibrant and festive.
It was different from the typical military green or blue worn at the time, making it quite special.
"Oh my, is this Cuihua?" At that moment, a woman in her fifties came out from the house, approaching them.
"Old Aunt!" Wang Cuihua called out quickly.
"It’s been years since I last saw you. I just heard from your mom that you have seven children now! You don’t look it at all; you still look like a young girl!" Wang Cuihua’s old aunt, her father, Grandpa Wang’s youngest sister, had married into the third team and had come over early.
"Oh dear, listen to you! I look like a young girl? My eldest daughter is already engaged!" Wang Cuihua replied bashfully, "Old Aunt, let’s go inside!" leading her into the house.
"Your eldest daughter is engaged? Time sure flies!" The two continued chatting as they went inside.
Bai Ruxue and her siblings stood in the courtyard. The house was full of people. Even though the wedding didn’t invite the entire village, there were still plenty of relatives, filling the house to capacity. The mix of smells was overwhelming for Bai Ruxue.
"Big sis, let’s join the wedding procession later. It’s boring just hanging around here," Bai Ruchuan suggested.
"You and Xiao Shan can go. I’ll stay and help out," Bai Ruxue replied.
"Big sis, I want to go too!" Bai Ruxia pouted.
"Then you go," Bai Ruxue waved her hand.
"Big sis, I’ll stay and help you," Bai Ruyun said, standing by Bai Ruxue’s side.
Soon, Wang Yongsheng led some of his good friends from the village, along with a group of youngsters, to pick up the bride.
"Xiao Yun, take the candies to Grandma first! Put them on the tea table later!" Bai Ruxue instructed.
The custom here was that when the bride’s family came, they would first set up a tea table, arranging snacks like sunflower seeds, peanuts, and homemade pastries, then serve tea to warm the guests.
Her grandmother had mostly prepared everything the day before, and they had tea leaves at home.
When she entered the house with her sister, she found that her mother had become the center of attention, with all the relatives gathered around her, talking.
The conversations were mostly about her clothes, how their family was doing, and questions about her children.
Many were clearly buttering up to her. Anyone with a discerning eye could see that Grandpa Wang’s only daughter was living well, and maybe by buttering up to her, they could gain some benefits.
Furthermore, it was known that Bai Daliang and Wang Yongsheng worked together at the milk powder factory, and everyone treated Wang Cuihua like some noble lady.
Especially the two aunts-in-law, who wouldn’t let Wang Cuihua do any work, calling her fondly as they watched onlookers in awe.
"Mom, let me help!" Wang Cuihua couldn’t take it anymore, seeing her own mom about to go out. She quickly grabbed her mother’s arm, giving her a signal.
Li Xiuying chuckled as she pulled her daughter out, rescuing her.
"Grandma, are all six dishes ready? Don’t skimp on the ten pounds of pork I brought yesterday, just use it throughout the dishes!" Bai Ruxue commanded in the kitchen.
"Got it, Grandma knows!" Li Xiuying felt at ease seeing her eldest granddaughter.
"Take out those two chickens from the storehouse and stew them! Add plenty of potatoes, that’ll be enough!" Bai Ruxue said after a glance. Although all the dishes had meat, the fried potatoes didn’t look appealing. It would be better to stew them with the chickens that were gifted to her grandparents, which they hadn’t eaten yet. They could use them now, and Bai Ruxue would bring more for them later.
Feng Minghua and Liu Lingling exchanged glances. No wonder their mother-in-law locked the storehouse; there were good things inside!
The corners of their mouths involuntarily curved slightly.
"Okay! I’ll get them," Li Xiuying responded, heading to the storehouse.
With that, the six dishes were in progress!
Potato stewed chicken chunks, pork belly with cabbage and black fungus, pork stewed with cabbage and tofu, pork stewed with dried beans, pork, and sauerkraut stewed with noodles, and a cold dish of shredded radish! These were considered luxurious dishes at the time, with corn bread as the staple.
No one could find fault with it.
However, the wedding party was delayed, and although everything was ready, the auspicious time was nearly past, causing Li Xiuying to become anxious.
"How can they delay ? Why aren’t they back yet, such a short distance? Did something happen?" Li Xiuying paced back and forth, while Grandpa Wang stood behind her.
"Sister-in-law, don’t worry, maybe send someone to check what’s going on," Aunt Wang Guirong comforted Li Xiuying.
"Yes, quickly, someone go check what’s happening!" Grandpa Wang suggested, looking around for a child to send, but couldn’t find one. "Junsheng! You go! See what’s going on!" he finally asked his eldest son.
"Okay, Dad, I’ll go check right now!" Wang Junsheng said, heading out.
Just as he was about to leave the yard, Bai Ruchuan ran back.
"Grandma, Grandpa, the new aunt’s two younger brothers won’t let her leave; they’re blocking the door!" Bai Ruchuan shouted breathlessly as he returned. "They... they said if they don’t get jobs arranged for them, they won’t let the new aunt leave!"
Out of breath, Wang Cuihua hurried up to pat her son’s back. "What’s going on? Isn’t Grandpa Niu going to control his two sons?" Wang Cuihua was anxious, directly calling out to Grandpa Niu.
"Not only not controlling, but their relatives are also subtly helping. The new aunt can’t even get out!" Bai Ruchuan said angrily. Read full story at novel•fire.net
"Oh no, what should we do? Jobs aren’t something that can be easily arranged! This is ridiculous! Didn’t we agree on everything yesterday when the gifts were exchanged? All the conditions they set, we fulfilled them. How could this happen now?" In her anxiety, Li Xiuying was at a loss.
"Wife, don’t worry for now. I’ll go!" Grandpa Wang said as he headed out.
All the relatives in the house rushed out, chattering away.
"Brother, you shouldn’t go, that’s not proper!" Wang Guirong stopped her brother. "Let me go instead!"
