Chapter 183: Chapter 183
Jason walked home dejected
He knew that he had no evidence that Richmond was behind his daughter's abduction but he knew that he was the brain behind it all. He masterminded the whole operation. All his threat had gone unheeded. He had not even boasted of being responsible because he had come prepared for any contingencies like recording his confessions, boasts and threats but he had been surprisingly in control of his emotions and why not, he must feel in charge now
Imagine him congratulating Jason on his wedding to Nancy. 'It had made the papers and news for weeks on end. You have it all now, a wife- a doting wife and a child and soon more children'.
It would have flattered him to hear that but it had not brought joy be ause he had also mocked him. 'I hope for this recklessness of yours, Nancy never gives you peace and the marriage that you thought would bring you happiness, let it turn out to bring you misery'.
And he was indeed miserable since Josephine had gone missing. Nancy had been understanding so far but for how long? And he didn't want anything troubling her in this first trimester of her pregnancy.
He got home and from the expression on his face, Nancy could see that he had had no luck and she had not folded her hands as she had kept calling the police to know if there was any encouraging news because she was out of her mind with worry.
They had tried to encourage her by telling her that they were still on it and that if anyone could get her child, they would.
She made up her mind that she was going to do something drastic.
She did not tell anyone but called Alfred and asked him a few questions which she urged him to answer truthfully.
After getting all the information she needed, she relaxed and smiled and coaxed Jason to eat. She was sure that her plan was going to succeed.Alfred afraid for her, decided to tell Jason all the questions his wife had asked him and how she had made him answer her honestly.
'I do not know what she has in mind but it would be good if you could keep an eye on her', Alfred had advised Jason, his voice laced with anxiety. 'I recall what happened the other time and I will not want any such thing to happen this time too. And to make matters worse, she is in the same delicate condition as last time. They may have treated her fairly then because of the paternity of the child but this time, envy and vengeance may not permit them to be so lienient'.
Jason was shocked. He was speechless
How did Alfred know that Nancy was pregnant?
Alfred laughed humorlessly. 'The signs are all there and having seen her when she was heavy with the first child, it was easier to know this time though it has not started showing much. So do not be surprised. I do not have any clairvoyant powers and neither did anyone tell me'.
Jason sighed. Why was he worried about a triffle like how Alfred knew about Nancy's pregnancy when there were more important things to be anxious about.
Things like what Nancy was up to. He had wondered at her cheerful attitude and had thought that it was a prelude to hysteria but now he knew better. She was planning something big and because she knew that he would never be in support of it, she had hidden it from him.
He was also very bothered at the condition of his daughter, this was already the third day and still no news.
He knew that she was still alive, if she wasn't, he would have felt it. Though he was not her biological father, there was a kind of connection between them bordering on telepathy. And that was why he was sad that he had not felt that she had been in danger earlier. If he had, he would have been able to save her. Caught the abductor before he took her away.
But he was too busy romancing with his wife that he had not paid attention to his feelings for his daughter.
He had gone several times to the lodge where he and Nancy had been kept though he had known that there was no way in hell that Josephine had been taken there. The abductors were not fools. They definitely could not use the same hide out twice even if they had not been caught there. Talk more of the fact that the place was already marked out of bounds but he had gone there just to satisfy himself that he had tried all available leads.
He did not know how to broach the issue of her plans with Nancy without implicating Alfred be ause he had asked that he not make her have an inkling that he had spoken to Jason about her probing questions.
He decided not to ask her questions but to monitor her. Anytime she would not be in the office, he instructed Mrs. Potts to quit whatever she was doing and take care of her, watching her without allowing anyone know that she was keeping watch over Nancy.
Nancy continued to bid her time. The police were getting tired. They had even informed the police in London about a child abduction, and Josephine's picture was all over the place with a very handsome reward for anyone who had information that would lead to her discovery.
Jason had to commend the person who did this. He must be an expert to have been able to take a child out of the city without the police detecting be ause Jason made sure that the report got to the police early. He had not wanted to take chances, at least not the type he took with Nancy during her abduction. He did not rely only on his strength and intuition alone but involved the police right away but it marvelled him that there still was no result and panic was beginning to set in.
He knew that Nancy would not fold her hands for much longer, he could sense her patience running out and that in itself was another source of worry for him.
Could these people not allow he and his family live in peace? Was it an offense to be in love and go after one's heart these days?
